thank you so much for your reccomendations!
I'm a new film student who doesn't know where to start and would like to broaden my knowledge aside from what I'll learn in school, so seeing all these wonderful books with your insight definitely made me feel more at ease! I have all in my amazon wishlist and some in my cart as I typed this!
    Again, thank you!!

This video probably only pertains to a certain group of people, me included. I really appreciate this.

I’m glad! The hope is it’s really useful to anyone who was in the same position I was a few years ago, so it’s great to hear it’s worked for you!

Please recommend a book on film genre ? I haven't seen any which explores various types of genres and easy to read for screenwriters

Hey, FunFact: I was Mackendrick’s student and assistant!
BTW, it is CalArts, not whatever that string of letters you used was!

Ah, sorry! Didn't mean to get it wrong.
You lucky thing! Was his teach as effective in person as it is via the book?

Analyzing film can be quite difficult and I’m trying to make my own films but I get so distracted and lost. Don’t know where to begin

Oh, trust me I feel the same way. Particularly over the last year. I think the big secret is that it doesn't matter where you start, only that you do. Get some momentum going and you can correct your course on the way!

wait im getting a little scared. Im going to film school next year and hearing you talk made it sound like there are a lot of essays. is that right? I just wanna make movies

Depends entirely on the film school!
I studied Film Production at University of Westminster. My course had like... a 70% 30% split, so we were making a lot of films, but we were also studying a lot of film history and writing essays. I know that some other film schools are entirely practical based, with the only essay writing being bits of "Here were my intentions and influences".

@@matthewgilpincom ok thanks that's good to know. Im visiting some schools this upcoming month so I guess I can talk to the faculty about that then.

i dont like that this is about film essays and not making films. Guess film school isnt worth it

    • @matthewgilpincom
      @matthewgilpincom  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Eh. It's a mixed bag! The university I was in was super competitive for major roles on the film productions, so I ended up a lot more focused on the theory side. It gave me some really useful context about film history and genre, etc. which is still serving me fairly well!
But this video isn't really so much about whether or not film courses are worth it, and more about what books are useful once you're studying it anyway!

Confusing video. Next time, please hold up the books and keep their images stable and on-screen for at least 20 seconds. That we we can actually see the books you so generously recommend. Thanks kindly.
