I'm a woman in my 50s. Been listening to this since mid-80s. I thought I had found manna from heaven when I discovered Pink Floyd and still feel that way. I think they are the band that will still be listened to (and studied) 200 years from now. And I have never, ever, ever been able to share it with anyone. Nobody I knew liked Pink Floyd and didn't want to hear it. My son hates Pink Floyd and thinks they're not even a good band. Seeing a young guy loving this song and being into it so much made my day more than I can possibly explain.

Trivia: One of only two Pink Floyd songs with a guest vocalist. Singer is Roy Harper, a British folk singer that was recording at the same time in the studio next door. One of the other things that gives this song its unique sound is it drops in and out of a 5/4 time signature.

The name “Pink Floyd” came from Sid Barrett. He took the first name of two blues musicians, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. The band was originally known as the “Tea Set” but had to change their name when they found out there was another band with that name already on the scene. Just thought I’d drop that tidbit of info for you guys. Great reaction, as always, love the channel.

Have A Cigar is about the band's disillusionment with the record company. "You gotta get an album out, you owe it to the people...we're so happy we can hardly count!" - coming off of the success of Dark Side Of The Moon, they were under tremendous pressure to achieve that level of success again. The band tried versions with both Roger and David singing lead, but it just wasn't working...musician Roy Harper just happened to be recording in another studio next door, and offered to sing the song - which is the version that ended up on the album. The Immersion box set edition for Wish You Were Here has the version sung by Roger and David...and while interesting to hear, going with Harper on vocals was 100% the right choice. By the way..."Which one's Pink?" The name of the band comes from two blues musicians...Pink Anderson and Floyd Council. If you want psychedelic? Go back to the EARLY PF albums, especially the first one with Syd Barrett.

They didn’t really invent psychedelic rock, but they were absolutely part of the movement who created it. And they are basically the biggest band to come out of that movement, so it’s easy to see it like they invented the sound, but it’s like most genres, it’s invented by a community of early artists that happen to gravitate to a kind of sound because of the social climate that facilitates the urge to express that part of the zeitgeist in our art.
But Pink Floyd started in the very early 60s with Syd Barrett, and as a mainstay at a club called UFO in London, they were a huge force in the development and creation of the psychedelic sound, and ESPECIALLY the psyche-prog end of the spectrum with their early 20 minute jam songs on stuff like ummagumma.
So it’s really not wrong to say they invented psychedelic rock in a way, I’m just saying, there’s a lot of influence and cross-pollination of ideas and sounds when a community of musicians are developing a new sound like that. It’s the same thing with punk, metal, grunge, whatever. There are big bands that you can point to that are milestones like iggy pop for punk and Black Sabbath for metal, but those are just the biggest early figureheads of the movements. Just like Pink Floyd.

They were a part of the movement for sure. "Momentary Lapse of Reason" came out in the late 80's and their first album was released in '67 with "Piper At The Gates Of Dawn" followed by
"A Saucerful of Secrets" in '68 then "More" in early '69 and in late '69 they released "Ummagumma". In '70 they released another two albums first being "Zabriskie Point" and second being "Atom Heart Mother" and the following year of '71 brought another two albums with "Relics" and "Meddle" then they released "Obscured By Clouds" in '72. '73 was another two album year with "Dark Side Of The Moon" coming out first, followed by "A Nice Pair". "Wish You Were Here" (the album this song is from) was released in '75 followed by "Animals" in '77 and "The Wall" in '79. After that they released 23 more albums, some greatest hits and some live so I'll skip through and just mention the big ones.

Psychedelic Music began roughly within the span from 1965 to 1966. Pink Floyd came on the scene in 1967. Many point to The Byrds' song Eight Miles High as the first Psychedelic song in 1966, but some also consider The Beatles' album Rubber Soul from 1965 to have the first real Psychedelic songs with Nowhere Man, If I Needed Someone, Girl, Norwegian Wood, et cetera. I'd even say their song It's Only Love from the album before, Help!, that same year might be the real beginning. But one thing is for sure, The Beatles were the band that were responsible for popularising the genre.
The thing with Pink Floyd is that they came about right as The Beatles were about to release their landmark album Psychedelic/Proto-Prog album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band in 1967. In fact, they actually recorded their debut album Piper At The Gates Of Dawn in the same studios at the same time when Sgt. Pepper's was being recorded. They took a lot of influence from The Beatles for their sound as they were overhearing all the madness going on in their studios. The Beatles brought full orchestras, eastern instruments, various tape samples, and proceeded with new recording equipment and new techniques for recording on top of obscure sounds, lyrics, and concepts. No one had ever done anything like this before The Beatles, hence why many consider them to be the greatest, or at least most influential band of all time. Pink Floyd started to do similar things with themes of space, acid, and mythical creatures on their first album with some new panning techniques and instrumental experimentation, but they weren't the originators of Psychedelic.
And lastly, A Momentary Lapse Of Reason came out in 1987, not the 1960s.

Wish You Were Here came right after the monumental success of Dark Side of the Moon. After years of hard work and good music they had finally become a financial hit. They wished Sid Barrett was there to be a part of it. That album was a tribute to him. Sid was the crazy diamond with black holes in his eyes. They liked him as a person and highly respected him as a musician. It was around this time Roger Waters began feeling an ever growing rift between their fans and the band.
Pink Floyd was originally named The Tea Set and was started around 1966 by Sid Barrett. Long story short, after one and a half albums Sid began to wig out and they brought in Gilmour as a backup. He finally replaced Sid.
Pink Floyd was 100% a space rock band in the early years, with sub layers of psychedelia. The lyrics were about moons in the solar system-and scarecrows. And they were hired by the BBC to continuously improvise during the live broadcast of the moon landing in 1969.
By the time of the album Meddle, they made a deliberate decision to distance themselves from the “space rock” label they’d been given and changed the lyrics of the song Echoes.
Pink Floyd, like all other Rock and Roll bands, has a blues influence. Nonetheless, jazz has a much more prominent sound mixed in their music.
For early pioneers of psychedelic rock Pink Floyd alone cannot be credited. In 1967 the Grateful Dead were holding acid tests in San Francisco and the Beatles were back from India and had released Sgt. Pepper for goodness’ sake.
All this makes me want to recommend to you Summertime Blues by Blue Cheer if you haven’t heard it already.

Good job guys,.... Funny thing about this Pink Floyd song. First, the song is about meeting with, and dealing with Record Label executives,.... not auditioning to be an opening act for some band somewhere, Haha!
Also, unbeknownst to most Pink Floyd fans, NO member of Pink Floyd is singing this song! Neither Gilmour nor Waters felt their voices were up to singing on that particular day, their voices were shot from recent concerts and performances.
One of their friends, Roy Harper a English Folk singer, happened to be hanging around the studio that day, and they asked him, (or he offered, it's not clear which), to sing the song,... and so he did. It's one of only two Pink Floyd songs, that is NOT sung by a member of the band.
As far as the quote,.. "Which one is Pink",... that is something people still say these days! Obviously these people are not familiar with the band. LOL. Btw, the name, Pink Floyd was chosen by one of the original Pink Floyd members att, Syd Barrett. Barrett had two huge influences in his early musical life, two old time Blues musicians, PINK Anderson and FLOYD Council.

David Gilmour can play a single note and have it sound sublime and grandiose; this is his greatest skill!! As far as vocals... he does exactly what the song needs; nothing more nor less!! Overall? It's never been about how phenomenal he is... it's been ALL about how tastefully he uses his voice, guitar effects, string bending techniques, finesse and style!! Is he the greatest guitarist ever? No. He however takes you on a journey with him, the song and his guitar!! Pink Floyd & Gilmour are The G.O.A.T.

Nice one dudes! This is classic Floyd. Hats off to Folk rock singer/ songwriter and guitarist Roy Harper who did the vocals on this track. His voice really suited the overall theme and vibe of the song. The whole of the "Wish You Were Here" album that this is from is just mind blowing. I've loved Floyd since my eldest sister used to play them when I was a kid in the late 70's to early 80's. Would love to see what you guys think of tracks like "Echoes" (Pompeii version), "Careful With That Axe Eugene" (Pompeii version), "Set The Controls For The Heart Of the Sun" (Live at Pompeii version), "Interstellar Overdrive", "Fearless", "Dogs", "Pigs (Three Different Ones"), and "Welcome To The Machine" to name just a few.
