Shiey would appreciate this video. He does this for himself he understand the implications of his actions and he doesn’t condone what he does. For me though he has inspired me to push my limits and test my abilities. I’ve taken up climbing and days long hikes, parkour and adventuring. It’s helped my physical and mental health immensely, I go on 4-5 trips a year now and I take inspiration of new places that I see in videos like shiey’s, ally law. Without these people the majority of us would never know of these places, he never tells us directly I have to find them for myself but it’s not hard once you know the country and the name of the thing or what it is. I love this guy he doesn’t post a lot but when he does I get so excited

Shiey is a thrill seeker. If you check his videos, you'll see that he always go to explore dangerous places, surf trains, climb towers, bridges and buildings without any safety equipments. Let him do his thing. Nice video though

@@IdRatherBeHiking I appreciated both your guys videos and your kindness towards him even in punching way, way upwards and I subscribed but that being said it's worth noting that of the million or so people who watched his video only about five percent even bothered to leave a like, so, to think even ten of those viewers may go out and imitate him feels like a stretch to me. Good looking out for that .001% though, how morally virtuous of you to make a whole video on your channel purely for their protection.

I suspect Shiey is relatively aware that he's compromising safety and practicality for viewer-grabbing footage. He's a true mad lad, hopefully not to his future detriment.
I completely understand, with low views on my channel this summer will be all high risk hiking for more captivating episodes.
I also think he aware, although in this trip particularly, he did push his luck more than his average video--and that's saying a LOT based on his history. I'm glad he got out of it safely.
I actually hope shiey watches this and learns from it and make his thrill seeking better informed, which he is always trying to be. I don’t expect him to ever be fully prepared for something like this because that’s probably not the point of what he does. This video is fantastic for us mere mortals, tons of good information and tips that will help a normal person traverse this type of terrain.

Shiey has undoubtably high level of climbing, fear tolerance and moving in dangerous terrain but its usually urban. He just needs a few weeks in the mountains with an expert to give him the run down on everything to mix with his skills. It was just so clear watching that he didn't even know what the hazards were.
Oddly enough, this was deceptively Shiey's most dangerous mission. Scooting out (while sitting) across to a couple of those cages at the top of the Duga radar site in the Chernobyl exclusion zone was pretty insane though. 'On The Edge' WALKED across one! I suspect that Oleg Cricket would JUMP across!

Well, lots of the stuff he does is probably just as risky, if not more risky than this, but good explanation! He has lots of experience in backpacking and being off grid for days at a time, but yeah the mountains were a big step up from normal hiking. But, he knows the risks for the stuff he does, thats why he does them lol
No doubt this dude has a good sense of heights, balance, risky taking.. all those train rides, abandoned buildings etc. I just fear newbies will watch him and try to replicate and fall to their death. There are risks here new hikers won't know about.

Been a fan of shiey’s channel for years. Never seen anything like it before but apparently it’s a genre. I’m a climber and backpacker of 15+, nearly 20 years. This was his scariest video to me by far. I knew he survived obviously as evidenced by his upload. I normally watch his stuff in awe and with much envy. This was the only video where I felt (and he admitted) he was very out of his element. Many many lucky breaks went his way on this one. I’m sure he would find that dramatic but this was a nail biter lol.

It first came out and even as a seasoned mountain scrambler it made me seriously ill. All your advice is absolutely spot on, obviously. The wet grassy slopes are truly deadly. A group tried to come down one after the Pinnacles, Crib Goch, Snowdon, and one slipped and it was basically a bouncing, tumbling toboggan run to the bottom. He was very lucky to get away with that one alive, although many bones were broken. A video of that is on TH-cam. This one was a genuine accident because the group was led by a very experienced guide. Accidents can happen to anyone, but taking precautions like you advise reduces the chance of them happening as much as humanly possible.
ya in that situation I bet the other called in help immediatly, something you can't do if you are solo.
One thing that always hits me when I watch his videos are his balance. I can't seem to understand how he has such good balance on such narrow/dangerous terrain, whether he's walking on a thing line of metal after climbing a tower or on mountain peaks his balance just seems like something insane, is it just practice?
mostly being calm and seeing how shiey isnt really afraid of death or pain helps alot and yes practice is key he has been doing this a couple years now and he is known for his balance
I did actually ask him how he just does things like this & if he has to psyce himself up & he did reply & said its confidence & his fears are people based. So I think he has been through a lot & this is his escapism.
If you had to balance yourself on the same piece a few inches off the ground, you could learn doing that well enough in a couple of dedicated days.
He just enters a psychological state that gives him enough confidence to do the same thing at greater heights that most people can't because they can't overcome the overwhelming feeling of how high up you are.
Shiey talks about his philosophy on life in one of his videos. Essentially he’s wired in reverse to most people. He feels safe in situations that others feel in danger and that’s what he seeks. Like Desmond, Gifgas, Ally Law etc he’s proper badass but always super chill.
I think this is a classic case of being skilled in one discipline doesn't necessarily make you skilled in another. Shiey is an expert urban climber/explorer and knows some parkour. Additionally, he is an expert stealth camper. However, just because you're good at those doesn't mean you're skilled at backpacking/mountain climbing. Shiey is pretty much a professional thrill seeker so I'm not sure he cares too much lol, but it is good to let others know that this isn't something you can just go out an do without proper training/knowledge. I do disagree with you on the trekking poles, except for the grassy descent. When you're doing a lot of rock scrambling, the poles can become very cumbersome and can limit your ability to use your hands to grip or get caught between your body and the rock. Obviously you can still bring them and attach to your pack, but I would argue that you should have a large enough pack to store them inside such as attaching them to the outside causes them to catch on things.
Poles are one of those things people love or hate in certain situations a lot of my mountaineer buddies don't use em in dangerous spots, I always have one around my wrist even if I'm using both hands. Its really just what someone is comfortable with but I like the added utility and range it provides. You are spot on with the transfer of skills, while he has the skills to do that traverse he doesn't have the knowledge of the dangers.
I always thougth i knew Shiey knew what he was doing. This video just gave me a brand new experience. Definently make more analysis towards urbex climbers!
This video shouldn't discredit his ability to climb towers etc but in the backcountry there he wasn't prepared at all and doing ill-advised things like dropping your pack.
in this video he underestimated Tatras mountain so hard... every people die here doesnt matter if summer or winter...
Well, 1st of all I love Shiey and his content for ages but when I saw this video of him hiking my country mountains it was kinda scary. I know how many people dies there just becouse they underestimate them peaks! Thought the same as you when whatch it for first time.
That crumbly rock you've got out there is pretty dangerous stuff, especially for people not familiar with it. I'm not surprised people perish there, ego drives people to do things they shouldn't be doing.

@@redragna3648 I love shiey but he definitely doesnt do stuff like this regularly. urban exploring and climbing metal structures is not comparable at all to how dangerous it is to jump around on visibly decaying loose rocks on a steep slippery mountain peak. no amount of skill or experience is going to help, it's complete luck that none of the rocks his weight was on broke off
He has another video, where he buys a bike and just starts riding up a hill in the middle of winter right into a snow storm. Then all his water freezes, he can't warm up food... Dude does some many sketchy things, but it is his way of life. He knows the risks and takes them anyways.

He said the scariest thing that happened to him was he started sliding down a roof uncontrollably and he only survived because of a small lip that happened to be at the bottom
there you go, so just luck saved him then, i predict he will not get very old, its a shame , i am sure quite a few other kids will try to copy him, not having his ability.
I appreciate the video. In my area, we constantly get someone who's either in need of rescue or dies. I was lucky enough to grow up and learn from those before me. Even then, two old friends, who are one of the most experienced in the area, perished a few months ago. Machine and men, right through the ice. Videos like this or Dan Becker's recent experience is really good, because it outlines the limits of ourselves and of the gear when we're going into more extreme conditions. If Shiey is doing this, then there's bound to be 1000s more who will do this, regardless of what us say or think. That's just how it is. The best we can do is leave some valuable lessons from our own mistakes, and hopefully the right people will find it before they head out. Like a father giving advice. The rest? The rest will be awarded with the Darwin Award. (jk) Have a good one.

31:00 It can get pretty dark here in Norway, since we live further north than... pretty much everyone else. The way I deal with this is to always carry a reflective armband, hanging on the outside of my pack. Wrap it around a tree, or some other tall structure. You can see it very easily from a mile away, even with just a minor torch. Just make sure the reflective material isn't worn down over years of abuse. The best is off course to mark the location of your camp on your GPS device. That nullifies blizzard and fog. Cheers.
You're damn right people are going to do what Shiey did, I'm from where the video was shot (Slovakia- High Tatras) and in 2020 we had record number of deaths in the mountains- 56, yearly average is 40, so it's almost 50% rise. And I'm not talking about increase in injuries and amount of people lost, rescuers frequently organize search operations.
Thats a fantastic idea with the armband on a tree! We get super dark nights here on Vancouver Island too way out in the bush. I don't venture far from my tent at night its my wilderness fortress haha. Ya when I first saw his videos I was worried others would try it, I was blown away by his achievement doing it but... I'd say he probably had a 15-20% chance of something going wrong resulting in death that day which.. in the grand scheme of things who would take a spin on a roulette table with a 20% chance of dieing.
Thanks for making this video, I was curious to see the comments. Amazed to see how many armchair adventurers think he is to be admired. In England when we here of antics like this, and lack of respect and preparation the first thing we think of is the potential risk to rescues personnel. He is clearly a total narcissist.
Ya a lot of armchair adventurers lol. I've summited 250+ mountains in the past 6 years so I speak from experience. Shiey just got into something where he didn't know the danger he was in.

This climb was cool the first time I saw it, having done some scrambling now, I realise how dangerous it is, even though it’s very risky, this inexperienced climb was just unbelievable 😎🤙

I just started the book "Off the wall, death in Yosemite" and it is quite fascinating so far. It's full of detailed accounts of every little mistake people have made leading to death, the author hopes that the lessons in the book will stop history from repeating itself over and over.
Very cool I need to check that book out, always looking to learn more. Ya that's just it, the average person doesn't know about these little tricks and unknown hazards. I was fairly new 5 years ago so I have a fresh perspective compared to the lifer hikers doing it 35 years. I've bagged over 200 mountains in the past 5 years which is how I've gained my knowledge so quick but still retain that perspective from when I was knew to it back in 2017.
Shiey is really slept on by most people, same with Anton aka bad cat. All great explorers imo, alongside poison
I feel like most of the mistakes shiey does on this trip come from him climbing urban struktures and not 2500 m high mountain ridges falling apart.
That's not a fail, that's an adventure
I remember being young and largely incapable of imagining bad things happening to me. It made me make some dumb and risky choices. But I don't think there was ever a time where I would have seen those ridges and thought it was anything but a mistake without a ton of training and gear. I'm glad he made it out OK because it was very nearly not the case so many times.
I come from the opposite side of life, scared of everything vs the young and dumb. One hell of an adventure to remember the rest of his life though that's for sure.

Shiey is more than a professional climber, he is an artist of balance and risk. If I were a very cautious and cautious climber, they would be very boring videos.
I'm from Slovakia where this was filmed myself (High Tatras) I seriously don't encourage anybody to do what Shiey did, especially alone, it's not worth risking your life over thrill or some internet fame and money from y-tube monetization. Last year 56 people died in these mountains, the yearly average is 40 and it's never been this bad, I feel videos like Shiey's will encourage people to risk, which creates huge amount of work for rescue services.

You made very good points, i live in the middle of 3 mountain range, so many people can hurt or worse in simple and very avoidable situations, unnecessary risks should obviously be avoided, but each to their own in some ways, i suppose

He is young and doesn't perceive the risks in the same light we do. If he thinks about odds, he often thinks "this isn't going to be the one." The leading cause if death for police officers has always been traffic related - they spend everyday driving around in cars and entering/exiting by a roadway. A piece of building can feel secure when it's actually on the very threshold of failing. It now needs every single bolt it has and there is no built in safety factor left. Once your motion gets one of them pulled/stripped a bit the next one starts and then the entire thing breaks. It can happen in the blink of an eye.
Experience is something only attained through years. He is pushing that edge without the experience.

The problem is that walking off the main pathways in the Tatra´s mountains is prohibited. The whole area is national park with highest level of protection. Despite fact he is really good climber, he should respect it as well.

Thanks for bringing awareness to this situation. Older folks (those who are in the early to mid 30s) might remember the film "Into The Wild" that also inspired hundreds of unprepared fools to explore the wilderness and to expect everything was like on that film. Fuck, no. Ask canadian rangers and they'll tell you how many naive morons went completely unprepared to tackle a hike of this magnitude.
Just because Shiey has experience and had luck, doesn't mean you do as well.
100%, if 100 people tried to mimic exactly his route, I'd expect there to be less than 100 that would survive that trek.
Scariest part of the video is when he sits on the edge of the chairlift without anyone sitting in the other end so that it tilts way too far in one direction 😮😮😮

Totally agree about the water, i did a day climb of Mt Rundle, Banff Alberta with a liter of water was completely dehydrated by the end of the day.
I bet, big mountain. I've done Ha Ling so I understand the exposure to the sun up there. Dehydration is the only thing that has really put me in a very dangerous situation in the mountains.

So he know about each and every move he do. He know places and environment around him. He invaded many factory, army camps, BAN reactor sites, so he is actually very good and also know his body strength. he not a normal hiker/train hoper/adventures , if you watch his video ,you know he got plan ,he is smart guy , exactly knew whats his doing , he knew whats the risk , he riding a bicycle to cross country in snow mountain road ,so you know he is not a normal guy , and i dont think is a fail or success , he just like a adventure , challenge and have fun , but you are not wrong , thats very danger, be safe be smart anyway .

I started watching Shiey for the train hopping and his nice personality, but honestly I struggle to watch a lot of his videos because I get really anxious and sweaty from this kind of stuff... 😅

He quite often goes underground into abandoned places without any way to check for air quality. I think those are just as dangerous.

I comented on his video doing that alone is a big no-no. As you mentioned, if you twist an ankle o btoke a bone it would be very difficult to get out. You should be accompained so in case of accident your collegue could go to asking for help.
I'd like to assume he has got a plan and at least planned the route somewhat. He's got a 2.5M channel and a huge patron crowd - way too risky to throw it all away. He's risk seeking, not having a death wish.

@@eunos1800 just because he made it safely doesn't mean if one of his followers tries they won't die. That's the point, he did it on a whim it wasn't planned properly he made a bunch of mistakes but came out ok. I'm pointing out all the mistakes because I summit so many mountains every year to help those from injured or dying from those mistakes.

We all weigh up our own risks, having strangers who were not there second guess our decisions is not really helpful for them, or us.
If people drive long enough likely they'll have a crash, people know this, yet they still drive as the risk assessment in their eyes is worth it

You seem like more of a hiker than a climber. In the climbing world, this is normal. Many would do this without a rope, and the idea that these massive rocks are going to "fall off" is greatly exaggerated. You can knock on it with your palm: stuff that isn't solid sounds hollow, and he is doing that.
Imo the only real criticisms are not enough water and emergency hear, and no way to call for rescue.
Climbers dont use trekking poles to scramble, your hands are much more capable.
The part you said was "the dangeous" was just a bit of easy low 5th class. The footholds may look small you, but those are not small. You'd be surprised how effective the feet can be. I think he has more climbing knowledge than you realize.
So my real takaway here is actually your own lack of experience. This kind of thing is more the realm of climbing and mountaineering, and in that community, free soloing this is nothing crazy or "expert". Its low level.

This was for shure just only lucky day. I live under this mountains all mi life. I do some kind of easy climbing ...till IV - V. UIAA in this mountains. U can get in one hour realy bed weather... and than with this equipment and skills u will die. Or u will be frozen. Almost in the middle of summer. I respect his courage... but his survival was not about skills, just about a good weather window :( ... never do it like him pls
btw: he broke all rulles and law in Slovakia abobut High Tatra mountains where he came. This kind of behavior in High Tatra mountains is denied cause of a logical reason. Enjoy nature and life... peace :)

This dude literally goes from Estonia all the way down to Iberian peninsula via train hopping…. Do you really think he’s gonna make up such a mundane “day plan” that could change at a whim? I think the trains would say otherwise…you have to think on your quick when train hopping. Not to mention, you gotta be quick on your feet…
Here in Canada I have done a lot of trips like this, most epic one was last year. Camped out by a glacier on a saddle 3000m up crossing ridges way worse than this for 2 days straight going where most likely no one has gone before. Everything you pointed out was great, especially water. We are lucky around here you can refil easy and constantly every time you come across a stream flowing out from a glacier.
Glaciers freak me the heck out. Water is such a touchy thing, even on vancouver Island I've become horribly dehyrated. What glacier where you trekking up?
@@IdRatherBeHiking We started near Meadow Mountain and the peak we went to was: 50°15'58.4"N 117°13'29.1"W
We went via the ridges to the south east, having to cross 3 other peaks to get there. We awoke the second day just below the peak to a thunder storm and given the terrain and exposure didnt fancy going that way back. We hiked the 1000m or so elevation loss to the valley floor, spent hours making almost no progress through the insanely thick trees and undergrowth before finally turning back, climbing all the way back up to the ridge and going back that way anyways, luckily by that point the storm had passed

Agreed, there are some types of terrain where you can scramble that stuff and the rock won't break or at least should be sturdy.. this is not one of those places.

@@JustinCasey216 no, this isn't some Hollywood fairy tale. You start to fall in areas like that and you die. Happens fast, life is short, for some it's even shorter. I'm all for him doing whatever he wants, but let's not try to protect egos and pretend that this isn't capable of going bad very quickly with so many variables not in your control. Doesn't mean he can't do it, but the average youtube viewer should be aware of reality before they are delusional enough to think they are capable of the same. Or not, they'll die, not me.. guess it doesn't matter, sucks for SAR though lol

I don’t think you realize, this man has climbed CRANES ATOP OF SKYSCRAPERS that TOWER over the cloud line, this is more comparable to an unrelenting wasp than a vicious hungry bear out of hibernation for him…
walking across a crane is arguably safer than many of these movements. because a crane is stable and carries tremendous loads. these rocks might give out with 100lbs of force.
@@fizban119 while perfectly true, the same (but in a different sense) can be said for the very cranes you speak of. When you’re scaling them, there could be condensation in the air that gets on the beams of that crane, and could be slick and fatal. Those ladders aren’t a joke either. Be sure to powder up them hands when going to climb those manmade marvels. And remember, always think abroad and far about the possibilities that can happen in such circumstances!

Shiey obviously has confidence in his own abilities, and from what i've seen i'd trust him to not endanger others. I think Shiey is most likely an order of magnitude better climber than the guy who runs this channel, and has a different idea of what is safe and what is not. He puts himself in dangerous situations because he enjoys it, he takes risks constantly. On purpose. I don't think this guy is the right person to be critiquing Shiey when scaling loose rocks with walking poles causes him to be terrified.
The point is he doesn't know or understand that kind of terrain. Doesn't matter if he is better at climbing he doesn't understand the risks of the environment he is in. I just put up 2 world first ascents, I know where my skill sets are.
i think Shiey is way overconfident, if you didnt spot his errors..throwing his pack etc....you must be one of those armchair pilots.
@@wout123100 I live in the Blue Mountains Australia, it's famous for rock climbing and canyoning and i've been doing it for 20+ years lol. Shiey takes risks, looks for adventure, that's who he is, I've seen him climb more dangerous urban things than this video. He knows what he's doing more than most. He knew throwing the bag was dumb and then did it, he chooses to take risks lol
