    I love the color choice of the blue/green as the base color. That makes those other colors really pop out of the soap! Great job, lavender IS hard to pick the flowers from all those flimsy stalks. Had a lavender garden myself, great smell across the yard, used to weave 1/8" ribbons in and around a fist full of lavender stalks & flowers to hang in my closets. Good as cedar.

      Thank you for watching and leaving a nice comment. Talking about essential oils and their fleeting scent ~ citrus ones are the worst. I soak them in benzoin powder because it seems to work better than clay. It does leave little spots in the finished product though. :) ione eve

      +BL Meyer Hi Brenda ~ your Russian lavender sounds divine. I usually get English lavender and it's very strong. I usually cut it with sweet patchouli for a softer, more floral smell. Where do you get your lavender? I wouldn't mind trying some. :) ione

      +BL Meyer Oh my, you lucky girl. Russian lavender sounds lovely. The flowers I use I get from my sister, but I don't know exactly what variety they are. I get some from my daughter-in-law too. In my previous reply I was speaking of the essential oil I use, LOL!

    Hi Ione I remade your soap yesterday and I JUST cut it and oh my is it lovely. I've been admiring this soap for months and was intimidated by it b/c of the colors and the hanger swirl but I am so pleased w/the way it came out (by the way I did like you and made my own hanger tool!) I posted a pic of it "pre" cut on The Soapers Lounge on Facebook but I did give you credit for it. Is there a way I can send you a pic of what it looks like? I thought I loved soaping before but wow this soap has put me over the moon! Thank you so much for posting the remaking of it :)

      Hi Meja ~ thank you for watching my video and writing to me. I hope you will try making soap. It keeps me busy since all my children are grown and gone, LOL! To answer your question, the oils and lye solution are around 85 degrees F. when I add them together for most of my recipes. I hope this helps, and happy soaping! :) ione eve

    Beautiful soap, I just love lavender! Why did you want to do gel phase, would you isolate if it was going to? What is the different ?

    • @EvesGardenSoaps
      @EvesGardenSoaps  8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hello ~ thank you for watching my video and the nice compliment. To answer your question, letting soap go through gel phase speeds up the saponification process, and the soap can be cut usually after 24 hours. Preventing gel phase by refrigeration is slower, taking up to 3 days. However, it is preferable under some circumstances. Using milk and/or titanium dioxide can cause overheating (cracking on top, fragrance oil leaking, etc.)and/or glycerine rivers (crackling). These negative aspects occur during gel phase, so preventing it helps to achieve a beautiful soap result. It just takes a little longer. I hope this helps, and happy soaping! :) ione eve

      hello,ione, i was wondering if you soap at room temp, and is your lye water room temp also? Reason, everytime i use coloants they turn different colors and my scents just vanish, or it makes my batter too thick, lol, i was soaping at 110F, could that be the reason for this? help!!

    • @EvesGardenSoaps
      @EvesGardenSoaps  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Teresa ~ thank you for watching and commenting on my video. To answer your question, I soap at around 80 deg. The lye solution and oils are the same temp. Soaping at cooler temperatures helps the soap take longer to trace, giving me more time for design work. Also, I don't bring the soap to trace, if I can help it, until after the colors and fragrances are added.
      The color of oils in the recipe can affect the outcome of colorants. For instance, regular and virgin olive oils, palm oil, and raw shea butter can be very yellow. Adding purple colorant to yellow oils can make gray since those are opposite colors (on the color chart). Also, some mica colors morph when added to soap batter. For this reason I don't use mica for coloring with 1 or 2 exceptions. I do use mica a lot for white, silver, gold, pewter, copper, etc.
      The only way to tell how a fragrance is going to work in soap is by experiment. Also, reading reviews on them helps. Some scents cause acceleration, some loosen the batter. Some rice and some play nice, lol!
      Some scents are light and need to be used at 6% of total batch weight. Some are super strong and 3% is almost too much. It's something you need to experiment with to find the right amount to add. Never go over 6% fragrance oil or 4% essential oil. Citrus essential oils never hold very long. I use cornstarch to maximize their length, 1 t for every 2/10 oz. eo. I mix it together ahead of time so the essential oil can soak into the cornstarch.
      I hope this information helps and happy soaping! :) ione eve

    you have such beautiful soaps! I am getting ready to make my first soap, and I am confused. Would you share the reasons you decide to gel and not gel soaps. I dont want to end up with the discoloration in the middle. I have watched soaping 101 about it, and also soap queen but I don't get it, ( humming if I only had a brain from wizard of oz, lol). Please help, thank you

    • @EvesGardenSoaps
      @EvesGardenSoaps  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Cindi ~ thank you for watching the video and commenting. Making soap is an exciting and rewarding activity ~ and one you are constantly learning something new in. I love gelled soaps. The colors are brighter and they get hard faster. What you describe as discoloration in the middle is called partial gel ~ occurring when there is not enough heat to penetrate to the edge. In winter I wrap the soaps in a blanket for 24 hours to gel. In summer it's too hot for that, so I loosely wrap and unwrap keeping a close eye-out for over-heating. The sides of the mold should be warm, but not hot. Overheating causes glycerine rivers and super fats/fragrances to pool and leak out.
      There are some recipes I don't gel. Soaps made with milks and/or a heavy dose of titanium dioxide. These soaps I sit out at room temp and feel the sides of the mold frequently. Milks tend to over-heat with no provocation, so if they start getting hot I put them in the fridge. Soaps with TD, I usually always just put in the fridge for at least the first 12 hours. Soaps that are not gelled take longer to get hard. I usually wait 3 days to un-mold them. I hope this info helps. Best of luck with your soap-making endeavors! I would love to hear how it all goes if you get the chance. Bye for now. :) ione eve

    this is one of most beautiful soaps I have ever seen. I am trying to learn how to make soap, but it takes a long time to learn! So much to know. I am in awe!! Question: was that lye and water mix that you added at the beginning from the pitcher? You didn't say, and I haven't watched enough of your videos yet (but I will!). I was just guessing that was lye and water. Thanks

      +Lady CarpeDiem Hello and thank you for watching my video. I appreciate the kind comment also. To answer your question, the mold I used in this video was made by a friend and the length is 16 inches ~ it's 3.75 inches wide and I think about 3.75 inches high.
