  • 2009 Ford F250 Super Duty loose steering fix. Checking ball joints, tightening Pitman arm, and adjusting the steering box while I have the cab off for engine repairs. Do this before adding a steering stabilizer!

    Quick update: The steering box adjustment helped a lot, but after a year I finally decided to upgrade from the worn out 4-bolt to a heavy duty 6-bolt. I bought a PSC SG754 from Jegs. It arrived in 2 days and there was no core charge. Installation was too simple to video. Man what a difference!

    Great reading of scripture and great explanation of how to fix the steering slop.

    Good information! I’m sure glad I traded off my 2009 powerstroke this past Friday! It was making a ticking noise after it warmed up and I had the a shop, 3 different times do every test to it and never had a check engine light or codes. At 192kish it started this noise and still ran strong! Had the truck for 6 plus years and never left me on foot. Between this diesel and my home town dealership I will not longer own a Ford unless it’s a 7.🌳. Owning this 6.4 was exhausting! Cost tons of money for maintenance and between google and TH-cam, I spent tons of time trying to learn more and more about the truck. I didn’t want to get to the point where your truck is in and rebuild it. If I’m going to rebuild any truck it will be a 5.9 Cummins with a 6 speed. Even though I do not have the truck I will keep following and watch your progress. I love the Bible verses my brother in Christ! God Bless and good luck!

    pleasantly surprised by the bonus in there at 2:18!
    also don't know if you've considered this or not, or if you have the truck still, but one of the things that ford really screwed up on the design of that suspension was the caster angle, they set it up with the barest wiff of caster to make the steering really light, if you get a little extension bracket that drops the radius arm down where it mounts to the frame it makes it a lot better

      It got me by until I could upgrade the steering box. The 6-bolt PSC steering box made my truck steer like new again :-)

    I don’t think anyone commented this yet but when checking the actual ball joints (the one between axle tube/knuckle and hub/knuckle) you do this by placing a pry bar or tire bar (leverage) under the wheel and pry up and down to check for movement (should be zero basically) the side to side motion in your video works to check steering linkage components. Also lookin my for sloppy movement like you showed. Only thing I noticed! Great videos keep up the work

    Is this possible to adjust with the whole truck intact or does the cab need to be pulled off? 2016 F350 platinum

      @barntech2291  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes you should be able to adjust the steering box in the truck. It’s just much easier to video while the cab is off :-)

    I'll suggest, find some help and put your hand on ALL of the suspension ends and check for play. Eyes are good but hands are better. PC

      Agreed. Lift the front end to take the weight off the wheels. Then use a pry bar to check backlash/play in each joint. Tightening the steering box bought me some time, but I ended up replacing all of my ball joints and upgraded the steering gear. 37” tires are hard on steering components!

    This is major, I have had this issue on my excursion for 10 years. Im on my third gear box and thousands of dollars in and I still have 15 degrees of slack. Everything is brand new too! the lift, the bearings, tie rod ends and ball joints, hydro assist PSC set up, I was thinking of upgrading to a red head gearbox, but now Im gonna try this first. Thanks.

      @@emerylandry2074 Solved the problem, I ended up upgrading to the Red Head steering gear and also upgraded the steering shaft with a beefed up Borgeson. The Excursion is now a pleasure to drive.

      How’d it work out for you? Mine is much tighter but it still wanders due to the large tires and lift. I’m planning a steering stabilizer and rear traction bars next.

    Good luck with your engine build. Just did my 6.4 myself and now tightening the front end and fixing all the sensors that don't like to talk to one another on the new engine. Been an expensive, discouraging but rewarding journey so far.

    • @barntech2291
      @barntech2291  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Mine is back on the road now! Biggest issue was a leaking injector line. It still wanders due to large tires and lift but at least it is tight now. Steering stabilizer and traction bars are next on my list.

    I'm curious. I'm gonna be building a garage at my home this winter. Any details on the garage? Thanks. What lift do you have as well.

    • @barntech2291

      Lol. My “lift” is four come alongs chained to two wooden beams. All materials came from Lowe’s and Harbor Freight ;-) My garage is actually a barn with a concrete floor! I have a little more about the “lift” in my first video about this truck. I’ve got to admit it’s pretty sketchy though!

    Im not exactly sure what youre doing at about 4:40. I understand how to tighten up the steering box but that play in the steering shafts is what im having issues with.

    • @barntech2291
      @barntech2291  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      There is a slot in the top of the steering box adjuster. After loosening the nut I could turn it easily at first but as the shaft got tighter I had to use the screwdriver as a pry bar to get the last quarter turn or so.

    Mine isn't loose , but whining noise when turning, and leaking fluid. Pump?

    • @barntech2291
      @barntech2291  ปีที่แล้ว

      Maybe. Could also be a cracked reservoir or ruptured hose. Can you tell where it is leaking from?

    • @barntech2291
      @barntech2291  ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you wipe everything down or spray with engine degreaser and then see where it is leaking from? It could be steering box, brake booster, pump, cooler, reservoir, or any of the hoses.
