FAQ (Updated 2020)
Q: How many table cloths do I need?
A: When buying supplies, 2- 54" x 108" rectangle tablecloths (available at Party City, Dollar Tree, or Amazon) makes 2 pom-poms.
Q: How many squares does each pom pom need to have/how many squares does each tablecloth make?
A: There isn't an exact number of squares because it depends on the size of the tablecloths you use. However, if you cut your material according to the tutorial, the number of squares doesn't matter. The two piles of squares (same color) should be collated into alternating colors (every other) and those two piles should be relatively even size & number - if you have to just guesstimate - it doesn't have to be perfect. You won't know the difference.
Q: Can I use different colors?
A: YES! That's the beauty of it! You can use one, two, three or more colors.
Q: Can I use other material other than a plastic tablecloth?
A: YES!!! You can use whatever material you like. The sky is the limit! The steps of the tutorial will yield the same general result. However, I cannot guarantee the finished result (how they look, handle, or last) of pom poms made with a different material (such as paper, plastic trash bags, foil paper, etc) simply because I haven't made pom poms using those materials.
IF YOU ARE USING MORE THAN TWO COLORS: make sure to use no more than 50 squares of material per pom pom.

I have one recommendation. Maybe hit the tablecloths with light heat from a hair dryer to take out the wrinkles. Mine came out of the wrappers super wrinkled and I didn't think to try to smooth them out before cutting and it made the whole process harder and uneven. But otherwise love them!

Yes, just keep in mind that you'll want to take out about 1/3 of each of the sheets from each color pile so you don't have overly bulky Pom poms

U did that really good when I do mine they never looks like that
I made a practice pair first. It took a little practice. But you know what? You can also take a scissors and cut the tufts down if you want to. The main thing to make them look even is to make sure you're alternating and twisting the strips as you go. Sometimes they want to lay down in clusters and you can just reschuff them. Also I found using a couple scrunchies on either end helped taping the middle without the tassels getting caught

Can you use tissue paper
Nathalys World Hey there! You can use anything you like to make pom-poms out of, however plastic will last the longest. Just keep the tissue paper ones dry. Also you may have problems with volume with paper. I’m not 100% sure - I haven’t tried it yet. Let me know how goes. Thanks for watching

You can use any materials you like. I cannot speak to how well they will hold up using anything other than plastic tablecloths though. Good luck!

so could we cut the tassles thinnger? I am trying to replicate the Taylor Swift Shake It Off cheerleading outfit pom poms. they are royal blue- like your blue and yellow. i dont think i have enough skills to make these but oh well.
Bronte I'm sure you can cut them as narrow or wide as you like and they'd be fine. The thinner the strips the less "body" in the fluff of the Pom poms there will be but I'd say go for it!

I would make these for myself and the other 5 members of my squad i would make these using Magenta paper in the size of 108" because bigger is better

I did not count how many squares each table cloth makes. But you use two table cloths for the pair and alternate them every other square is a different color. I hope that helps.

You need two tablecloths per set of Pom poms. You may be able to get away with fewer but your Pom poms won't be as fluffy and full. I'd recommend buying the full 88

I didn't say. It isn't an exact number. Just as long as the stacks are relatively even. They don't have to be perfect :)

Hey Charlene. Great question! You can use a plastic jump rope handle from a cheap, dollar store jump rope, or you can use large popsicle sticks, or toilet paper rolls (wrapped in electrical or duct tape for durability). Check our my other Pom Pom making videos for details.
I know you say it is time consuming but how long does it take you to make a pair?
30-60 minutes depending on how quick you work.
How many squares in each pile? I am planning on making these for my flag cheerleaders to use during breast cancer awareness month.
It isn't an exact number. Just collate/alternate the two piles of same color (like blue and green) so that they are mixed. You should have two relatively equal piles. It doesn't have to be perfect. I hope they turned out well :)

The squares were appx 11" square, give or take. Doesn't have to be perfect. You can't tell when they're done.

Question can we make them out of paper?
I imagine you can, however, I do not know how sturdy they will be. Paper, depending on the type, is flimsy and I’d hate you to go to all the work only to have tassels tearing/breaking off.
Can I use paper instead of tissue paper
Absolutely! Just know that paper, whether that’s tissue paper, crepe paper, construction paper, wrapping paper, etc, all behave differently and paper is not as durable and can tear when making your tassels.

I took me maybe an hour and 15 when I just did both. Haha, takes a little longer when you're showing someone else how. I hope that helps.
what other materials work as well?
Plastic tablecloths, trash bags, shower curtains, metal foil, and tissue or crepe paper will work. Each material acts a little different though.
