- Description: Mercedes 508D 3.8 Di camper, Om314 engine. Short drive from cold on 19 November 2015 Springholm to Haugh of Urr . Vehicle is fitted with electric power steering. Level of electric assistance can be varied by dash mounted knob.PAS normally set lower for better feel and driven with both hands on wheel! Cruises nicely at a true 48-50mph as in this video and achieves about 22mpg on long trips fully warmed. Faster and it hits fuel consumption as does short runs like this but still high teens. Operated per Mercedes Drivers handbook with gentle right foot, early upwards changes and little braking it can be remarkably economical but I don't tend to go that gently unless road is quiet. Spot other Mercs to left at beginning!

it was fine during the period I owned the vehicle since sold. Very little to go wrong. The main issue with that particular application was that the van was all 24v whereas the ex Corsa B EPAS was 12v so I had to drop the voltage.@@jimduncan5543

Hi Chris. What top speed do you get?
The rated top speed on standard tyres and standard injector pump settings on the level is 58mph but it is uneconomical, noisy driving to be at the governed limit. A nicer and more econimical speed for these is 45-50mph as it is after all a design from the late 1960s when the the pace of life was less hurried.
Is the ride as smooth as it looks ?
It was ok for a 5.6 tonne rated truck of late 1960's design on leaf springs. I had them well lubricated and new shocks all round. I also had a 608d horesbox and it was harsh by comparision.
