      Oh definitely. I remember thinking of Pluto as that boring little ball of rock right on the edge of the solar system, and never realising how wrong I was. Weird and wonderful to think that even such a distant, cold place has, in its own way, a thriving and dynamic environment.

Comparing the two images gave a sense of depth that you don't often get with space images and shows just how close alpha Centauri is to us, while also showing just how far *Everything* is from us. It's instane.

I followed New Horizons from launch and gosh what a wait for it to arrive. I remember being nervous the week before closest encounter. I can't imagine how the New Horizons team felt during that time.

      A return journey to Pluto would take at leasst 50 years, because you have to skow dowh as you approach instead of just rushing by. You then get a very bleak welcome something like the south pole of Mars in mid winter. Would you volunteer for it?

    • @MochYee
      @MochYee 3 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      LOL
      For more information, Charon is named after the Greek deific ferryman of the Underworld, and it's pronounced like "karen." However, when James Christy first discovered the moon, he had promised to name it after his wife, Charlene. Because of that, he called it Charon with a "sh-" sound, not knowing it was also the name of the mythological figure under a different pronunciation. As a result, most astronomers today refer to Charon as "sharen" as a reference to both the myth and Charlene, though the original "karen" pronunciation is also used sometimes.

    The name of Pluto’s moon was originally meant to be pronounced “Share-on.” It’s named for Charlene, the wife of its discoverer. James Christy, whose nickname was “Char.” The fact that it also spells the name of the ferryman on the River Styx was a semi intentional coincidence.

    • @tomheringer2047
      @tomheringer2047 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, Wikipedia lists both pronunciations as correct. Either Sharon or Karen. I personally prefer Sharon.

      The Spanish name for Charon is "Caronte" which only leads to the mythical character.

      The correct pronunciation of the Greek god Charon is Kare-On. The correct pronunciation of Pluto's moon Charon is Share-On. This was agreed upon out of respect to the founder wanting to name the moon after his wife as mentioned above.

    This was one of my favorite episodes on this channel. I tried to find out how a water ocean could have remained liquid in such a cold environment. The only theory I came across was that heat is left over from when the planet formed. I'd like to see some calculations on that. It surprises me that that would be true. How hot was the planet soon after it formed? If it was all that hot why didn't the water get mostly boiled away? How good an insulator is the solid part of Pluto so as to prevent the ocean from cooling in 4 billion years or so?

    From the beating heart of Sputnik planitia to the strange new body of Arrakoth, I have a feeling New Horizons is only getting started on it's own great journey.
    The note about alpha centauri was something special though, I dont think space gives me existential dread but a kind of existential awe. We know so much more than we ever did before in history and yet there is still so much more left for us to discover.
