Dave Grusin clearly INTNDED the song to be cheese - it's used to show how Robert Redford's character has sold out by allowing his noble horse to be exploited in a cheesy Vegas act. Yes, I genuinely appreciate orchestral disco music from the 70s - look at my other posts. Y'all are idiots.
Before finding your post on TH-cam, the only time I had heard this song was when watching the movie in the theater. Even as a naive 12 year old, I understood the use of the song playing to the dance routine from all the young women in their sequins and hip-disco outfits allowing Redford and his horse to escape in plain sight by riding right through the routine off the stage past the audience and out the door, leading everyone (audience and dancers) to believe it was part of the act until it was too late to stop him.
