  • Ōkunoshima is a small island located in the Hiroshima prefecture. It is popularly known as Usagi Shima meanins "rabbit island". However, this place has a rather dark history that's hidden behind the cute bunnies. Ōkunoshima played a big role in WWII as a poison gas factory. In 1925, the Imperial Japanese Army Institute of Science and Technology initiated a secret program to develop chemical weapons. They found a small island to set up their factory, didn't tell the residents or any potential workers what was being made, and tried to keep everything a secret. When WWII ended, documents concerning the plant were burned and the gas was disposed of either by dumping, burning, or burying it. The people who were involved and those who knew about what was taking place were told to be silent about the project.
