    Thanks for making this video. I'm a pharmacy intern working towards getting my PharmD, and whenever I counsel a patient about vitamins and tell them that, unless their doctor told them to get it, they probably don't need the supplement that they're asking me about, they look at me like I'm crazy. There's a lot of misinformation out there and it's important that we educate patients, especially when OTC labels can be so misleading!

    • @karuzelastudio7858
      @karuzelastudio7858 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I hope you keep your attitude. Unfortunately a lot, if not most, pharmacists are completly on board with this scheme. I couldn't believe it when our friendly pharmacist convinced my mum to buy that bs vitamin C that's all magic and natural and about 20x the price of regular vit C.

    • @zhevtone
      @zhevtone 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Ok I'm completely on board with this video, but there are cases when doctors actually don't tell you about a certain supplement when you really need it. And there's research to prove it's effectiveness. I'm talking about D-mannose. I've had so many UTI's and been to many doctors and none of them recommended it to me, and then I saw people talking about it in forums. Haven't had a UTI since taking it. It's not FDA approved, and not recommended by doctors, so what? It changed my life 😉

    • @249aaa
      @249aaa 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Rada Surmach while that’s wonderful that you’ve found a solution to something ailing you that doctors struggled to, this wont be the case in most other situations. the whole point of the video, as i’m sure you know, is that people are being misled into buying vitamins that may not even contain the things that the bottles say they do. in the end though if you feel better on a certain vitamin supplement than you do without it, and feel the investment is worthwhile, more power to you.

    • @zhevtone
      @zhevtone 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@249aaa I agree. But I am afraid this video could also prevent people from taking vitamins or supplements when they actually need to. Most of the supplements sold from major brands actually contain the ingredients listed and are legitimate, so let's not draw big conclusions from small incidents of some ripoff companies.

      @@RedRoseSeptember22 they don't force you to take medications. If you come in with a problem, and there's a drug that will treat it, they'll prescribe it for you. That's kind of part of their job you know. And it's irrelevant that doctors tell you it's pointless to take supplements, what matters is _scientists_ say it's pointless - at least, in most cases. These supplement companies prey on people's ignorance. People get drawn to supplements because they think 'natural' means 'safer,' which it doesn't. Natural vs unnatural chemicals are still chemicals, and they may or may not be safe. The difference between drugs and supplements is pretty simple: the former have been proven to work and tested for safety, the latter haven't.

And the irony of calling medical doctors profit hogs while using your own popularity and reach to profit off of charlatanry is lost on most of these people. Just stop saying it until you have actual proof of a actual doctors (that's doctorS with an s) prescribing actual medical drugs unnecessarily AND getting away with it.

    There’s definitely risks with taking supps - like quality, purity, and does-it-contain-what-it-says in the quantity that it says. My rule of thumb - only supplement when there’s a true need. And find a GMP certified brand that’s ultra transparent about their ingredients!

      I can agree multi vitamins can most likely not help. But I disagree with certain things your saying. I know there's beef between functional medicine and conventional medicine but It's crazy how you think most people get all the vitamins that is required to not have a deficiency and in AMERICA of all places. Vitamin D and zinc and potassium are one of the most deficient vitamins out there. And just because you can get these vitamins from foods doesn't necessarily mean it's process in your body correctly aswell and or it's from a good source. I guarantee you almost everyone in this country has or will have a bad gut issue that has been proven to give vitamin deficiencies that leads to emotional and mental disorders just to name a few examples. So yes it is necessary to use supplements specially if you don't consume what your suppose to eat. Conventional medicine bloodwork doesn't fully show all vitamin deficiencies btw... essentially you won't really need to take vitamins if you know what you're consuming but odds are people can't afford quality foods or don't simply know how to nourish themselves properly.

    You should review Tati Westbrook's vitamins. The name is Halo Beauty and there was a controversy when she first launched then because of some ingredients. Her subscribers thought she was going to launch make up or skin care so when she presented vitamins people went crazy.

    • @ItsAsparageese
      @ItsAsparageese 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      (Nothing in this response is intended as a retort to you, since you didn't state a case either way about her product. I'm just replying about the general topic and speaking to general trends.) Tati's formulation for Halo Beauty is actually really well thought-out and fairly in line with research on the various components (JenLuvsReviews did, as usual, an incredible breakdown analysis of it). A lot of people want to dismiss literally anything in a pill form as being pointless cash-grab fluff, but that's as irrational as making generalizations about All Pharmaceutical Drugs or about All Surgical Remedies or whatever other toolboxes are available for issues. A big problem is that a lot of people think "supplements" and "vitamins" mean the same thing, but they definitely don't. There are lots of other compounds that *aren't* vitamins that people supplement for useful effect, and there are certain vitamins that do have useful properties when taken in greater than necessary dietary amounts, and there's nothing wrong with that, but so many people are quick to dismiss that possibility and they end up making ignorant criticisms because of it. Inositol is a B-vitamin sugar but megadoses of it are downright miraculous for many people with autism/OCD/similar cognitive problems, for instance. Alpha lipoic acid is the only thing keeping my nervous system from feeling on fire all the time. These are just a couple of examples, but the point is that I think most people really don't give supplementation an objective and even-handed look, they just want a quick generalized answer for whether it's dumb or not, and nothing in healthcare/biology is that simple.

    • @ItsAsparageese
      @ItsAsparageese 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Her formulation is actually really well thought-out and backed by research, and there are useful therapeutic quantities of nearly all the ingredients. JenLuvsReviews did an amazing ingredient-by-ingredient complete breakdown and analysis of the formula, so definitely check that out if you want the real lowdown. People who think you can get everything you need from a healthy diet are failing to recognize that sometimes, more than a dietarily necessary amount of certain compounds can have additional benefits and cause desired results. Something isn't a waste just because it's not truly necessary; by that logic, people who have the goal of enjoying dessert are wasting money when they get dessert. Quality of life, and modification of appearance, are totally legitimate goals for people to have even when they don't have deficiencies or complaints to begin with, and proper supplementation can help with those goals.

Second, I've got a stomach condition that makes it where I can only eat very small portions which can lead to me feeling super short of breath sometimes to the point where my vision starts to go. I 100% agree with Dr. Mike on most of this. But, if you feel better taking a multi-vitamin and can afford it, go for it. It's a no-risk situation. Like wearing a mask during COVID. What personally helps me, is journaling. It's like a diary, but not like "Dear diary.." if you know what I mean. It clears my head and makes me fall asleep in no-time.

      I wear a sleep mask! Makes everything really dark, I sometimes use earplugs cause I work nights, try to avoid using devices (phone, laptop etc) like an hour before bed that really helped me a lot... also and it may sound stupid but make your room peaceful... make it place that is for sleep and tranquility.. I try as much as possible to not do work in my room :)

    I know he reacts to medical dramas so I 10/10 recommend the show Doctor Stranger it’s a Korean drama but it’s very interesting as the main character is a top surgeon for North Korea and is trying to escape the country and it speaks on like the human experiments that he has to do and what it really means to be a doctor, I don’t know how accurate the medical stuff is but It touches on very interesting topics it’s on the Viki website I would love to see his reaction

      Because they’ll end up with an illness that results from not having them. Improving the immune system for example can help kill bacteria, viruses, or germs before they get worse. In my case I plan to add shiitake mushrooms to my diet to help promote natural killer cells in my body to kill of these pathogens. They do an amazing job at destroying the cell walls of these pathogens and can even kill precancerous cells before they turn into cancer

      I've had low iron in the past, so I take a low dose iron supplement.
      Plus, I'm a middle aged woman, and don't get much sun... so I take a daily calcium with vitamin D. I usually get them in the little pharmacy aisle while I'm grocery shopping; I don't bother with all those fancy supplements at specialty "health food" - and supplement' stores (I cant afford them). Those places exist for the health of the *wallets* of the people selling the stuff.
