I was messing around with this effect and just noticed that Video Copilot made a huuuuge mistake. He didn't add "Turbulent displace" on the "Water" composition that's located in the main composition. Adding turbulent displacement here will cause all the drops to seemingly flow together when they start touching and will prevent drops from stacking on top of each other. I would also recommend using only one layer instead of two layers for the particle based drops and adding variation to the drops using the "CC Particle World" settings instead of simply having two different layers. This should further enhance the effect's I mentioned earlier.
How do you mean it ? Make yust one Layer with Drops and one layer with Particel Drops then Pre Compose and then add the turbulent Displace ? When i do it like this the Drops dont come together, i want that the Drops that i created and the Particel Drops flowing together , is this possible ? Sorry for my Bad english.
@@DannyCaruzo I know I'm responding to an old comment, but maybe this helps someone else: go to the "water texture" composition and add an adjustment layer above "water drips". Then add a Fast Blur (I used blurriness 10 and repeat edge pixels turned on) to mix the drops together and you could use a curves adjustment to make the resulting drops bigger or smaller by adjusting the contrast. I also added another turbulent displace with amount at 30 and size at 10 to blend the drops even more and another adjustment layer with Roughen Edges set to low numbers and layer opacity at 20% just to add a tiny bit of extra texture to the drops.
Big thanks to you Andrew for continuing to produce "old school" After Effects tutorials without people having to pay extra for plug-ins and even giving away free plug-ins like the amazing Saber. I see so many comments below of people helping others by answering questions and I think you foster that with your work.
I hope you know that you created a wave of VFX artists. You inspired me when I was 10 in 2006, and I've been learning from you to advance my craft ever since. I just wanted you to know that there's no thank you great enough for doing what you do.
The one and only Ae Jedi is BACK! Great tutorial, this effects would be a pain in any 3d program. The fact that this is made in Ae with no plugins is stunning. Great to have you back Andrew!
Andrew you never disappoint, such a simple yet versatile technique. Hint: instead of manually copying your comps you can use them as textures for another Particle World effect.
i know, who the fuck are the 150 assholes that disliked this video? thanks to this tutorial I got a promotion , hey videocopilot I didn't mention my boss that I used this video im sorry, is that cheating? I chited my girl yesterday but i didn't feel as bad as I felt when I got the promotion by applying this effect in my job I felt like I was stealing something from this awesome channel .
Andrew the most interesting thing about seeing your tutorials is not the final result but to see how you integrate AE effects. Thank you very much for letting us learn from your experience!
DITTO 100% enjoyment of fast blur joke! This is an excellent tutorial. You are excellent in speaking and sticking to the point w/ no necessary distraction interference.
I followed all the steps exactly as you did, but when it came to the part when you put the cc glass effect on the background and turn the softness to 0, the water drops only have a thin grey outline around them and it does not look real at all. what might have I done wrong?? I'm new to after effects btw
did you turn the Softness to 0 and the discplacement to max (or ~500) for your water effect bumpmap? From what I see in your droplets it seems you don't have the *Watter Effect Bumpmap* added..... - check tutorial @17:30
Check the last black solid you've made in the water texture comp. It has to be the comp size, you probably didn't do that because the last black solid was smaller in the tutorial.
John Doe he ends up changing the height to 90 and the displacement map to 350. this isn't the problem because even when I mess around with these settings, it doesn't change the look. turning up the softness gives the drops more detail but it still doesn't look realistic
omg the legendary God of vfx returns with a super big bang , can't wait for what's next coming :******* :) :D Great tutorial like always, even better :**** motivates me to go back & fire up Ae :*** !!!
when i add the luma track it just tracks the texture without the CC glass effect. So i end up with a tracked luma but with no depth to the drops that i should get from the CC Glass, if that makes sence. i have lost about 1/10 of my hair stressing over this, can anyone help?
Did you ever figure it out? I tried changing the cc glass from lightness to “alpha,” but for the life of me I couldn’t get the drips to have depth. The droplets has height but the drips just stayed luma key gaps with like scratchy “outlines.”
I love how humble you guys keep it and the humor. I also LOVE how much you constantly give back to the indie community. You are all AWESOME!!! Keep up the amazing work :) I've been following Video Copilot since the days masking was a mystery to me lol...
buddy.. I legitimately stumbled upon this video by accident, but I love how you incorporated humour so effortlessly in video editing tutorials, it's genius. Just because of this video I intend to as much as I can about editing [P.S. *You got yourself a new subscriber ;)*]
Thanks so much for this tutorial, you didn't use any 100 dollar plug-ins or skip over any important steps that left me lost. Also I was able to complete this using CS6.
Andrew this was about the most interesting and fun tutorial I have seen. Especially it is exactly what I wanted to do and the details that you added were spot on! Thank you so much!
This was a really great tutorial. You were so thorough, explained every step nicely, and i had no trouble at all following your step-by-steps. Wonderful video! Looking forward to trying out more of your tutorials~
Wow... I can't believe it's from scratch, seeing the drops form just blows my mind. Like how does one even conceive what the final product COULD look like from white dots?
Just a heads up - the Ambient is set to 100, adn everything else to 0, so that the rain drops have a basic lighting similar to that of the image itself. Hope that helps!
Andrew you're the man. That's freakin awesome. Love you stuff, glad to see you putting some tutorials together again. Can't wait for the next ones. Heck, I need more time to just play on After Effects.
Just when I thought the tutorial was finished...Andrew throws in 10 more color correction curves and noise, cause hell yeah, that's the way the guy rolls.

what should be the parameters for the turbent displace that has to be placed on the water composition ? Could you please help?

I'm going to make a preset of Gaussian Blur and name it Fast Blur. I'm 100% serious. lol

Thx for the tut, tho I'd prefer a tutorial of how to make a raining scene instead of just water on the glass
It's already out there...
I have a 3D rain tutorial on my channel, it's a little dated but you can obviously tweak it to your preference
Video Copilot has another tutorial called "Lightning Strike" which goes into adding rain to a scene.

well you could search the FX console cough* the effects search box, CC RAIN.
