Sometimes life can get you when you aren't expecting it. My heart goes out your way. We have not met, likely we never will, but everyone suffers and none of us want anyone else to go through what we have ourselves and that means on some level compassion makes us most human when we see another suffering. If you were here I would buy you a beer and a few moments of silence because sometimes that is all someone can do, share the burden. You are not alone, even when you don't see anyone in the room.

Nice to see you back, 'we' missed you Glass drilling/milling experiment was interesting. About 15+ years ago I bought some 'glass drills' which were more like spear point spade bits.. Came with instructions . Never thought about milling glass though, may have to try it. Luer lock was something I didn't know was actually available unless you were 'medical, dental, hospital, etc' and needed them by the hundreds. That adapter will be just what I've been looking for to blow out small air passages in carburettors I modify for 'vintage' (1960's-70's) motorcycles
Looking great! Any plans for dust covers? I've got similarly exposed rails and ballscrews and am thinking about HIWINs 'advanced wipers' vs months of work for real telescopic dust covers 🙈
If you sit the piece of glass on top of another sacrificial piece (called a waster) the shelling / blowing out is restricted to the waster and not the workpiece. The waster provides support to the weak corner of the glass hole / edge. This is common practice in optical manufacturing, although we would normally use sintered or electro-plated diamond, non-fluted cutting tools. For best results, laminate the workpiece between wasters, bonded with a layers of beeswax/resin mixture.
Great projects !!! Cutting glass with a carbide end mill and tap magic. To add steel to glass, a flexible isolators can used to mitigate thermal expansion differential. Thanks for sharing.

I have worked with glass for a good while. Glass can take very high compressive forces but will not tolerate tensile stress. Usually we drill glass with diamond coated drills but i quess its the same with tungsten. When making a hole in glass you push through only half way. Then you need to drill from the other side rest of the way. This way all cutting forces are compressive and glass wont brake. When dealing with glass the most important thing to keep in mind is that glass can take huge compressive stresses but will brake with little tensile stress. This is the way glass cutters work. You make imperfections on the surface and make tensile stress on that side and glass breaks along the line of imperfection.
This is some great info. I just finished up some projects involving mirrored glass. I used several diamond impregnated Dremel bits (dry) and my Tormek slow wet sharpener. These work but took forever. I'll certainly remember this video! I do admit, the Tormek is extremely preferable to the Dremel bits (less dusty and violent). And yes, I wore a mask!
Thank you. I was very happy to see a new video from you this morning. I saw the new machine on the Instagram and was looking forward to seeing it on TH-cam. By the way, I was taught [many, many years ago] that the preferred coolant for cutting glass using typical spear type widia drills was [lamp] kerosene. And to prevent blowout I usually put the glass on a small piece of rubber located directly under the planned hole (with corners supported by something soft, like a soft foam).
Totally understand the silence, and if you ever need more, take it. We'll be here when you get back. Also, learned something (multiple things actually) from this so big thumbs up.
I'm surprised you don't center punch the glass, as obviously you like living life on the edge- machining glass, driving on the wrong side of the road!!!! nice to see you back. happy new year

Stefan, again you do the VERY difficult,, and make it look easy. i bought diamond drills, diamond coated twist drills, and diamond core drills. just to do basic glass "working". but they are abrasive tools. the endmill you used is just carbide,drill too! wow wow WOW!!! poppy's workshop says HI

At some point I'm going to have to try working some glass. That was quite interesting. I never new the name of those Luer Taper connectors although I have used many of them over the years. Thanks for that bit of info! Finally, that is a beautiful road you were driving on. It makes me wish it snowed here.

Nice work on the glass. As someone that has "drilled aquarium" (to allow an overflow pipe though the side or bottom), that was very interesting. I used diamond-grit hole-saw and water for lube/cooling. Hope 2021 is a better year than 2020!
Very interesting. The break out on the top surface of the glass was due to the helix angle of the tool. As others have said a downcut spiral would solve that so long as the cut does not go right through.

I cover the base side of glass with self adhesive vinyl sheet or masking tape to prevent blowout or fracture. Seems to work ok provided feed speed is quite slow and no air pockets in the substrate. Great vid as usual.
Stefan, life has a habit of slapping us all in the face sometimes. I do hope you are ok. But, if you never have problem's, the good times will never feel as bright & joyous. Hoping things get better in 2021, last year was a strain for anyone who wished to do the best they could for them self & the ones they love. Things here in the UK are worrying, for many reason's, but lets not dwell on it any more. Over the holidays I have been messing with an old (and basic) belt driven CNC router, now up and running I will see how this takes my fancy before moving up! I always wondered what those tips were called. Excellent, excellent work as always. Really surprised standard 2flt endmills cut glass that easily- would never have guessed this. I'd have used diamond burrs. The precision blowgun tip thing has long been a need of mine for similar reasons. Well done!

Your router is very nice, I am so jealous. Having an enclosure is a must, I machine a lot of HDPE and the chips go everywhere even with the enclosure. My router operates much the same as yours with the tool height set after each tool change. When first built accuracy was on the order of 70micron, I suspect yours is much better. Some day I would like to build a new router with higher quality everything. It would be nice to see the photos of how you established tram and other assembly detail. Normal drilbits can be used to . Back in the day , we used a round silicon bead to make a puddle . Fill puddle with petrolium . And start drilling..oh ja not in hammering mode offcourse..lol Had big seawater reeftanks , and DIY them myself. Even filing glass is possible , well done like your calm narration . just search in aliexpress for: "CNC gebrüll akkordeon" ;) BeiFute has good offers.
for the Y axis I think a simple aluminium angle bolted to the top of the table on each side so chips can't fall onto the rails would go a long way
There are some very good ones in aliexpress.
In alibaba they can make you cusom guards from wax cardboard for less than 100eur.

Kovar is used for tight mechanical contact with glass. It has the same thermal expansion behavior.
The chip breaking abilities of those little carbide tools is most impressive. ;-)

At some point I'm going to have to try working some glass. That was quite interesting. I never new the name of those Luer Taper connectors although I have used many of them over the years. Thanks for that bit of info! Finally, that is a beautiful road you were driving on. It makes me wish it snowed here.

Nice work on the glass. As someone that has "drilled aquarium" (to allow an overflow pipe though the side or bottom), that was very interesting. I used diamond-grit hole-saw and water for lube/cooling.
Hope 2021 is a better year than 2020!

Very interesting. The break out on the top surface of the glass was due to the helix angle of the tool. As others have said a downcut spiral would solve that so long as the cut does not go right through.

I cover the base side of glass with self adhesive vinyl sheet or masking tape to prevent blowout or fracture. Seems to work ok provided feed speed is quite slow and no air pockets in the substrate. Great vid as usual.

Stefan, life has a habit of slapping us all in the face sometimes. I do hope you are ok.
But, if you never have problem's, the good times will never feel as bright & joyous.
Hoping things get better in 2021, last year was a strain for anyone who wished to do the best they could for them self & the ones they love.
Things here in the UK are worrying, for many reason's, but lets not dwell on it any more.
Over the holidays I have been messing with an old (and basic) belt driven CNC router, now up and running I will see how this takes my fancy before moving up!

I always wondered what those tips were called. Excellent, excellent work as always. Really surprised standard 2flt endmills cut glass that easily- would never have guessed this. I'd have used diamond burrs. The precision blowgun tip thing has long been a need of mine for similar reasons. Well done!
in most cases grinding is probabably the better way of cutting glass :)

I’m a tradesman in the US and have seen glass men use hand drills to drill holes in glass on site. They also use belt sanders to chamfer the edges.

Your router is very nice, I am so jealous. Having an enclosure is a must, I machine a lot of HDPE and the chips go everywhere even with the enclosure. My router operates much the same as yours with the tool height set after each tool change. When first built accuracy was on the order of 70micron, I suspect yours is much better. Some day I would like to build a new router with higher quality everything. It would be nice to see the photos of how you established tram and other assembly detail. The tooling plate looks solid and functional. Thanks, happy new year.

Normal drilbits can be used to .
Back in the day , we used a round silicon bead to make a puddle .
Fill puddle with petrolium .
And start drilling..oh ja not in hammering mode offcourse..lol
Had big seawater reeftanks , and DIY them myself.
Even filing glass is possible , well done like your calm narration .
