hi, I'm currently having the same issues with my van, an 11 plate sprinter, 447,000 plus miles, you mention in one of your comments ( The biggest change was replacing the gear selector bush ) was changing the bush easy enough, currently sat waiting for rac to come do a diagnosis at home, meant to be going away on 20th so hopefully an easy fix
Hi wow some great mileage you have on yours. Changing the bush was easy enough, the hardest bit of that process was removing the actual gear knob. It may be better if you can find a replacement gear selector mechanism. I replaced mine with a low mileage one which was more expensive but it meant everything had very little wear on it. If you want to keep the price low replacing the bush also worked, it just took a bit more effort. If you check the other videos on this channel you’ll see the full range of replacing the; gear linkage cables, counterweight, entire mechanism, selector bush too. I hope they help and you get it sorted. Just got back from a 5500 trip in ours with no issues at all, so once the gear selection was sorted it’s all working well with the 274,000 miles 👍
@@beaulunaedvantures hi, thanks for your reply, rac did a temp fix on it, however now im having trouble getting into lower gears, will drive in 1, 3 and 5th gear and can get reverse with a bit of persuasion, im going to resort to change the cables myself, got a set from gsf how long did it take to do,
@@terryhenderson556 Changing the cables didn’t take long at all couple of hours at most. Getting in and out from under the van took the most energy 🤣 if you have someone on hand to pass you tools and bits you need - And get some axel stands or height under the van to make it easier to manoeuvre under there would be better than how I did it parked half on the curb. A part from that once the lower dash inside the cab is removed it’s really quick
Nice job, looks like it was worth the effort and not too complicated. Did you use a genuine Mercedes part (expensive) or was it an aftermarket item. Keep up the great content.
Hi again! Yes I did use a genuine replacement cable, however it wasn't new. It came with the second hand gear mechanism I bought from eBay recently and replaced on the van in the last video. It was more to see if there was any difference on selecting 2nd gear, but I'm coming to the conclusion that there is gearbox damage causing that issue. It is only really slight and not geting any worse so I'll live with that for now. How is your repair/adjustment of your gears holding up? And where are you looking to head to next?
Hello im about to do the cables on my 2007 crafter wich is the same as sprinter, do the ends of the cables adjust, or do they come in different lengths, ive fitted new leaver but still a bit awkward with 2and 5 , could be cable stretch, thanks rikki
Hi Riki, I’m not sure if the black clips at the gearbox end are adjustable sorry. I fitted second hand cables and the black ends were already attached, I don’t think they are adjustable but couldn’t say for certain. Driving mine daily atm and it’s running well so hopefully the gear cables will sort it for you - Good luck! 👍
Hi, just found your channel, I have a 2014 sprinter by myself and the gears are very stiff. Did you find a big improvement after the cables and oil change? Thanks
Hi, thanks. Same year as ours 😁 we were having major issues trying to select gears, mainly 1st, 2nd and reverse. The gear lever would have to by rammed into these gears and crunched into them. The reverse lights and camera would come on trying to select 1st gear and going through the gears was a pretty miserable experience. The biggest change was replacing the gear selector bush in the dash mounted gear selection mechanism (that’s what I call it anyway). Changing the gearbox oil made no real difference on our van, but it was good to do for maintenance I think. If your having issues with stiffness selecting all the gears I’d say the cables would be a good place to start for sure. And changing the gearbox oil is a relatively simple procedure so might also be worth a go too. Let me know how you get on 👍
Hi, when I bought the cables from MB they didn't come with the press on parts at the gearbox end, so ai attached the old ones, but when i put it all back together the gearstick won't move over to the fifth/six position, would you have any advice?
Hi, I’m not sure why that would be to be honest. Wonder if it might be worth getting a pair of new ones from MB to see if that is the cause of the issue with 5 & 6
Alright mate, did u manage to sort this? Ive just changed mine but 3rd is now 1st 5th 3rd to get 1st i afto lift up to go into reverse got no reverse, im sure i left it in gear when i took old ones off tho thsnks
Hi thanks for the upload, it’s been very helpful, I was wondering about the plastic parts at the end of the linkage that push fit on to the gear box under the van. Did you use the old ones as the linkage I’m thinking on buying from a MB dealership doesn’t appear to have these plastic push on clips supplied according to the picture? Thanks again 👍
Hi David, the black clips at the gearbox end came with the secondhand cables I bought, but I know they are not included when buying the cables from main dealer and need to be bought separately. If you ask at the Mercedes parts desk they will be able to give you those too. Just out of interest have you a price for the new cables from MB? Rang them recently for a price of a rear light cluster and meant to ask then but forgot
@@beaulunaedvantures nice one thanks, I’ll ring them up and see, if you go online now western commercial MB dealer currently selling linkage cable set for £97.20. 👍
@@beaulunaedvantures that’s great, thanks for the part number, I actually have a 2014 VW crafter but it’s a rebadged sprinter, only difference is the engine and front face styling, everything else including gearbox is the same. 👍
@@aberdeendeltaforce Thanks very much that’s really helpful. Good luck if you give it a go 👍 I’ve very little experience with this sort of thing and found it pretty easy going
Couple of hours. Helps to watch the video to see how to remove the lower dash. And if I did it again I’d Jack and secure the van to give me better access underneath it, but it was pretty straight forward once the dash was out the way 👍

@beaulunaedvantures thank you much appreciated, I've since found it it's the linkage at the back, what would they mean by that
Ps did manage to do the nc500 in it over the last 2 weeks and now on 450,000
Thanks for this mate top job !!! Hopefully my Vito is similar?!?!
Fingers crossed. Cheers for the comment, couldn’t find anything on TH-cam when I did mine so I hope this video helps. Good luck 👍
Nice video. Did you replace the white nylon bush in the gear lever too? That might help your 2nd gear
Hi yes that was the first thing I did to improve the gears, and that made the biggest difference to improve the gear selection 👍

I was listening to your instructions and I took the gear box out. Can you do a video on how to put it back in please? 😅
Hey up mi duck🤣 if you take the gear box out you just need a really really big hammer to get it back in 👍🔨
😂 a stick shift in a sprinter. LMAO why?
Pretty much all we drive in Europe 😁
