In Warcraft 3, the most prominent maps were like Run Kitty Run, Hero Line Wars, Line Tower Wars and Vampirism. I remember quoting every line the characters made when they died when I was 11. That shit was like, such good memories.

The Warcraft 3 quote is itself a reference to Star Wars Episode IV, when Jek Porkins (the fat pilot) gets shot down during the attack on the Death Star.
The tower defense along with a lot of other wc3 mods are now in dota 2. They really did hit the nail with the custom maps.

"They came from behind" is actually from the first Star Wars movie (the 1977 one). Blizzard put it in Warcraft 3 as a reference.
It's also a voice line from the DotA 2 hero "Gyrocopter".
It's actually a voice line of the Warcraft 3 unit "Flying machine", which was used as model template for the "Gyrocopter" hero in the Warcraft 3 map DotA, which, like everything else, was copied verbatim into DotA2. It's not "a voice line", it's the same voice line.

As for the dota vs tower def, yea it was. After all even in Wacraft 3 one of the most popular modes before that was Arena battle which was pretty much the jungle aspect of moba style.

I don't think it is crazy at all that league became so successful off of a mod, the mod was ingenious and they knew there was a market to pursue on the more casual side of things with that up and coming genre.
