Mr. Vizard I grew up reading your books and articles, and still do. In the days before TH-cam and the internet you offered so many of us a start in the right direction working on cars and engines. Its an honor to be able to listen to you and learn from your experience here on TH-cam. THANK YOU. Let the journalists peddle their sponsors products, you sir (along with Smokey) are a legend!
Me too, I think I read first Vizard article in 70's when I was around 12 or 13. 'We' had an old Ford Anglia we drove around vicarage field, (friend was son of local vicar) I remember it was a horrible pea green colour
I bought your "How To Rebuild Your Small Block Chevy" back in 1985, that sent me on my way working on performance. I recall your reference to Smokey Yunick in that book. Got to meet Smokey in Daytona at his shop on the beach when he had his bird shop. I ended up winning a couple stock car racing championships in Calgary Alberta Can. Your writings and Smokeys " Power Secrets" book I give my most of my credit to. Great to see you still at it and you are most welcome to the You Tube platform. My days of racing are now in the past but I did get to win two championships from the 90s through to 2002. Always in the top three the years I competed. Great stuff David, keep it up !
Hello, David. I’m also an inventor who has been working on internal combustion. And like you, I take pride in disproving axioms. I’m writing up the 8th version of my engine (so apparently I have some familiarity with being wrong.) 😅 My goal is a bit different than yours. Instead of monster torque I’m designing for efficiency and smoothness, like would be needed in a hybrid application. I call it the 10/4 stroke simultaneous-combined-cycle catalytic-staged-combustion piston engine. I’ll contact you when I file paperwork in a few weeks. Gonna break the 2/3 efficiency barrier in a consumer-sized engine without resorting to a condenser/bottoming cycle.
DV you put me in the winner's circle. I got my one and only victory because of the things I learned from you. Racing against big money I know I needed the edge. Well I got it from you brother thank you. Very amazing My car number is the same as your cupcar number
Mr Vizard!! I love watching and learning from u!! I have a cam guy an he is pretty good a figuring out what is needed!! I think I would like to see if u could recommend a camshaft for me!! It's a small block chevy 383 stroker!!! It's not a traditional 3.75 stroke 30over bore, it's a 3.80 stroke with 6inch rods, STD bore +5 dual eye JE flat top pistons im gonna spray it with a stinger 3 drop down nitrous plate!! But I want to drive this truck Alot!! I want it to be a sleeper!! It's going in a 92 chevy 1500 with a built 700r4 transmission with a small stall depending on what cam I use, im gonna race it some but I really want this to be a awesome sleeper, im gonna run 3 inch exhaust and stop them infront of the rear wheels and turn the exhaust tips out!! It's got 220 Promaxx aluminum heads with 2.02 1.60 valves and a openplane intake portmatched to the heads made by professional products!! The reason I'm not using my Dual plane is because I'm using Holley Sniper efi and they recommend open plane intake plus the stinger 3 nitrous plate im using needs open plane, only spraying 220 max to it!! So if u can match me a camshaft for this setup if not touch trouble!! I'd like to try and run one of your custom spec camshafts!! Thanks and God bless and keep doing what you doing!! Thank u!@
Hey DV looking to select a cam for a 5.3LS. Does the “128” method work as is or should I use a different number. I saw in past videos where u said different engine use different numbers. Thanks!
David, I have a wide range of knowledge in a variety of fields. I was able to read between the lines that are between the lines. I know you do the same. Few of us have the skill. I had worked as manufacturer representative for a few dozen manufacturers, not in the automobile industry though. When they got into a problem a dozen or so companies couldn't solve, they called me to resolve the problem. I have driven about a 300 to 500 mile radius (one way) to get to the site since an entire building or large machinery cannot easily be taken to the shop to repair. I would discuss issues with factory engineers and would school the engineers on a regular basis. It was mostly heating, cooling, and refrigeration, but there were other fields and disciplines. I had a 100% record to resolve many problems no one else could. I agree with you and don't put up with BS either. What I see in you is a world class engineer when I watch your video's. I was to the point decades ago that when people try to dump their BS on me, my reflex was, and still is, to laugh at them!! I do understand your frustration though. I have the same problem - I am great in technical aspects but sometimes do not have the journalistic skills. From one professional to another, you are world class. And I rarely use that term. I understand the basics of engine building enough to know that the technical information you provide is at levels few, if anyone else, can obtain. I also agree with you that the "we" term gets on my nerves. I had a bad heart attack with heart damage about 16 years ago, and have big holes in my memory. For about 5 years doctors didn't think I would live. Only 8% survive with the heart damage I have. It was a tough 5 years since everyone would keep me just beyond arms reach. I am watching your video's to refresh my memory and to learn much more detail building engines. I want to build a 427 (7 L)/(434 at .030 over) or a 486 (7.7 L) Small Block Chevy for in my 1984 Camaro. The newer heads can handle the CFM to handle the displacement for such a large displacement small block. I will claim it is a 305 CID (5 L). Laugh Out Loud!! Don't let the fools irritate you! We both know they are posers and wanna-be's. Keep up the great work!
I'm building my first ! I don't have a bunch of money but really listening. It s a stroked 351w as I'm a blue oval guy. I wanted you to know I sent a thank for every bit of information! Appreciate any more guidance. I've been in construction from age of 12. Worked next to dad on weekends and summer break. I'm great at what I do. Dad passed and we both wanted a fun car. Hey David. I really loved your engine building books I borrowed from the school library when I was a young and inquisitive boy. Back then it was a great knowledge base to start my own building and learning as I go. But David I have to admit that while the earlier videos that you used to release have been great and for the most part pretty informative, however as time goes by you seem to get really affected by any feedback that differs, even slightly different, than your own opinion. I think that the internet can be a beast and unless you learn to tune out the noise and also to listen and consider to people's knowledge and opinions then it's not going to be the place in this huge public domain where people can actually challenge on the spot what you're saying, unlike writing articles for your books or other publications. This comment is coming from a place of respect for you so please remember that. Take care and I hope you start to get back on top again real soon mate. God bless and kind regards, Jim
I think your missing the point. Mr. Vizard isn't giving opinions. Or arguing others. I realize it may seem that way. But he is simply relaying FACT based in 10s of thousands of Dyno tests. The valve timing of an engine isn't somehow magically different now than it always has been. Short of VVT or VVD systems. Which are irrelevant in this context. Let someone prove him wrong. He's the real deal. He is behind some of the most well designed and performing parts in the automotive aftermarket today. He's also decent enough to help guys with intake manifold design without compensation. Hard to beat that. BTW, I am a part-time engine developer and full-time electrical engineer and Jon's methods using CFD and other SOTA tools aren't much different than what we use in our industry.
I'm curious, do you think there is anything "important" about budget builds of an engine designed in the early 1950's and has been out of production for decades because it can't perform to modern standards?
Cant see how a cam being nicer to the valve teain would correct for a drop in dynamic compression. Maybe on the top end the difference would be smaller.
I once asked my dad how I could get the others to like me at the track. I was 16. He told me to loose. I said well that isn’t gonna happen and never worried about it again.
Well, Mr. Vizard, I've had the pleasure of reading a lot of your articles from the 1980s, or probably even earlier. And later on the speed talk forum. Glad to see you on TH-cam From what I've been told by folks who have more experience building engines than I do (which admittedly is not setting the bar very high...) seems to be that the intake valve closing, and the overlap period seem to have the greatest effect on power production. The most of these people I've ever told me about the dynamics of the actual cam profile seem to be that they are usually looking to get that intake valve opening as quickly as possible once it comes off the seat, and that the profile allows for the valve spring to control the rest of the valve train without bounce or unwanted float. Which is just MY SECOND HAND OPINION, and has a cash value of exactly what anybody has paid for it... Looking forward to the next installment!
I have a masters in Mechanical engineering but because of how i sound people still think I am just some dumb hillbilly. No problem for me I can still beat them at their own game most of the time. 🙂
My first car was a Mini (and i loved it) the rear suspension was what they called "hydrolastic" , rubber donuts with a independent trailing arm lever system , it was all mounted on a sub-frame u could drop out of the car , putting a beam axle in there must have made a radical difference !
Sig never had the luxury of perfect profiles. Crane good profiles for the day IDK if either was best at cam timing, maybe Stahl , Jones for sure Honorable mentions to Racer Brown and Jack Engle

4) best average of 3 pulls wins.
Is there such a thing, as two identical engines? Switch the same cam between your two "identical" engines.
Do this experiment, you'll see....no two combustion engines have identical anything. Close, but so are good custom cam grinders.

No blood please!! Just facts. Put stuff down where even I can understand it. Thank you DV for just trying to help us understand.
I have the Mini book, and after reading it, the best BMC A-engine information book, it was very clear to me that DV is an professional engine man.
But one problem was not solved at the time of writing: Why the Dellorto DHLA was slightly better then the Weber DCOE. They are similar, aren't they?
A compliment from Smokey is worth more than anyone could imagine.
met the owner of Smokeys Camaro with the famous 302 that cleaned house in 69 and all he could bitch about was Smokey carved out the heads and rebuilt them His way with tons of epoxy With perfect Valve angles and raised runners
that turned down strait into cylinders I whipped out 3 grand and said buy new ones and thats enough to have them installed and he took my money
but changed his mind lol
Guy never even Drove it
Man id tear up the state with that car lol or heads
and yah great compliment from about the only one that would be smart enough to matter

I've never heard of this Schmidt guy. I didn't find much with a google or youtube search, either. So he can't be very important. By engaging with this guy, you may actually end up giving him notoriety. Something to consider.
Schmidt Motor Works, pretty helpful guy actually. Jon no h.
Get 'em DV. No more letting fast talk and BS rule the conversation. Facts don't give a shit about what someone thinks...
How are you doing Mr David I hope all is well God blessed you.i l just started watching your video I learning from you 👍
Cant see how a cam being nicer to the valve teain would correct for a drop in dynamic compression. Maybe on the top end the difference would be smaller.

I once asked my dad how I could get the others to like me at the track. I was 16. He told me to loose. I said well that isn’t gonna happen and never worried about it again.
Mr.DV...
You have BALLS ...Authentic..

Well, Mr. Vizard, I've had the pleasure of reading a lot of your articles from the 1980s, or probably even earlier. And later on the speed talk forum.
Glad to see you on TH-cam
From what I've been told by folks who have more experience building engines than I do (which admittedly is not setting the bar very high...) seems to be that the intake valve closing, and the overlap period seem to have the greatest effect on power production.
Thank you much D.V. !
Best damn garage in town!

Sig never had the luxury of perfect profiles. Crane good profiles for the day IDK if either was best at cam timing, maybe Stahl , Jones for sure Honorable mentions to Racer Brown and Jack Engle
When you surround yourself with the best. Others try to find a way to bring you down to there level. When racing series make rules to limit you to everyone else's level. You stand alone!
All the books I read as a kid were books you wrote. I didn't realize that until a couple of days ago. Th haters don't know crap. They just think they do. Keep it up for those who respect you.
I love the fact you can see he has a chip on his shoulder due to all the BS info in this industry
Mr Vizard, even though you have lived in USA a long time, majority here have never heard of you.
I was talking to carpenter working on our house last week and he started showing me pictures of drag car he worked with as part of pit crew.
I grew up in Britain and have read your articles for about 50 years (even when I had to hang around in WH Smiths to do so as I couldn't afford every magazine you wrote for)
I seem to remember you wrote something about being bored with working out spring rates as a junior engineer?
Anyway, I guess I'm one of the few 'lay people' who knew you were an engineer first, engine builder second and 'journalist' to pay the rent
Great vids! glad I found your channel shout out to UTG for that
Never heard of him?
Don't forget to like the video😁
The fact that the following variables influence the ideal LSA, and that your 128 formula does not take them as input, is all one needs to know to understand that the 128 formula is not comprehensive.
Throttle size
Intake manifold
Port flow maps
Chamber flow trajectory
Intended RPM range
Valvetrain stiffness
Valvetrain mass
Valve acceleration
Header diameter, steps, collector dimensions
Exhaust system
Drivability requirements
Emissions requirements
Well Done!
Who is he mad at whom is he talking about ???
Thanks DV.

David, it seems that you can't admit the fact that you exaugurated the application value of your 128 formula and have a grudge that I called it what it is; a gimmick.
I'd like to see the math and the dyno runs that make up the data set. Constants are getting plugged in that may or may not make sense in real world drag/circle track SBC applications. I'd like to see the same study on LS applications.
@@ahoneyman
Why bother with that when it doesn't provide any methodology for understanding or improvement?
1D simulation i.e. EngMod4T or Dynomation is a much better path to understanding and progress.
@@ahoneyman The way he now say it is only intended for a narrow range of SBC make the formula make even less sense. If the intake valve diameter is required to be a certain size, it should not also be a variable.
@@jonathanschmidt6507 I'm looking at this from an end user perspective. The formula only needs to apply to what exists in the market.
