    Instead of sentencing Popcorn to jail they should have made him an official ambassador of the state of Tennessee, and his likker the official beverage.

      If only. The governor should have stepped in & pardoned him. Not only because of his age & non-violent offence, but because he was a real, living, breathing part of Americana. Or if only one local law enforcement could've tipped him off. I mean, you know they drank his likker just as much as anybody else around there.

    Maggie valley has really turned to scrap in the last 20 years. Now it's full of rich outsiders who built mansion size summer homes. Popcorn was smart. He used to hang around the small.gift shop owned by some of his relatives and bs with tourists that would stop in. He always carried a 38 pistol he would save around on occasion. He played the mountain man stereotype to the max and sold a lot of shine because of it. Those people would go back home and tell their friends. Toward the end he had several people working for him and cranked out hundreds of gallons from large stills. That old copper lot still be is shown with is not what he actually used.

    The ironic thing is that Popcorn could have started a legal moonshine business and made tens of millions of dollars from his notoriety, but fate would not have it.

    • @AlexZanderMuro
      @AlexZanderMuro 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      any of the moonshiners of the past could have, but thats completely against the entire principal of making moonshine. he already paid taxes on the ingredients for the mash, already paid taxes on the copper to make the still, paid taxes on the gas to get up the mountain, paid taxes on the land hes making the shine on, and paid taxes on the jars he puts the shine in. none of his processes wouldve been "up to regulation" and he wouldve been fined and taxed into oblivion before even being able to make a drop of likker. the rich get richer while the ones with the passion get arrested and "made examples of." whats the difference between selling eggs or potatoes at a roadside stand and selling moonshine? the govt can take a bigger cut from the moonshine, therefore it isnt allowed. back in the early 2000s it was $15 a gallon tax for ethanol, now its upwards of $36.

    Dolly Parton should have set him up in Dollywood doing demo runs. Sold the goods legally with Popcorn's picture on the jars. She could have paid the taxes on that 800 gallons. Let him and JB entertain the tourists in their old age. Let them train the next masters of the art to take over when they had to retire.

    Ever body talkin bout Popcorn, if we gonna honor him, we the people, we americans, got to stand up and be counted as sayin what the law done is wrong. No man should be able to tell another he can't make his own drink. I get the tax part, and I can agree that the same rules that apply to taxing jest about ever thing else should stick, but when a man just want's to make his own peaceful drink at night, seems like thats what God wanted him to do. Change the law, if you want to honr Popcorn, change the dang law, do it the right way, get together using the internet and your numbers count. Tell congress who you are and what you want. We are a law abiding people, but the law gotta be fair and not so dang petty and selfish.

    If u like liquor his will not make u want to puke and it don't burn much at all. That's what makes the difference between good corn liquor like popcorn made and the rot gut stuff. Even at 100 proof it was so smooth a baby would take a second gulp if they got their hands on the bottle. That's not exaggeration. When you try some real good corn liquor, the first thing that goes through your mind when it hits your belly and you're instantly high as a kite, is "what in the hell are they doing to all the legal liquor, to make it taste so damn bad, when a man can make it in the woods and it comes out trading this damn good!?" I mean it goes down almost like good cold water but if take a big shot it goes right straight to your damn head faster than it can get down your throat and you want another drink and then you better hope somebody with some sense is the to make u put the lid on it because you won't want to.
