This is my dad’s close childhood friend. I’m so proud of him and the way he’s representing our beautiful community. The sense of loss and devastation we are feeling is indescribable. Even for those of us who still have our homes. Our community is practically gone and will never be the same, but I’m hopeful for a new beginning in due time. Please keep Altadena in your thoughts and prayers. 🙏🏾
This man is poetic. We pray to conserve his perspective and this human spirit. I pray that his family’s homestead will be restored. This heritage cannot be replaced ; they are one of a kind.
HERE WE GO AGAIN WITH MIS INFORMATION. NO IT NOT MIS INFORMATION ITS A OUT & OUT LIE. SHE JUST SAID FIRES BREAKING OUT LAST TUES. NO. HONEY. FIRES BROKE OUT ON JAN 7th LEFTY LOONS AT IT AGAIN 🤔🤨😳GET YOU REPORTS STRIEGHT DUMB ASS
My wife and I have lived in Altadena 38 years and lost our home in the fire. Mr. Williams' description of what makes Altadena special is the most eloquent I have ever heard and I agree with everything he said. I have been telling everyone who has reached out to us in this time of trouble, and there have been many, that as heartbreaking as the loss of our home and possessions has been, in some ways the potential loss of our community is worse. I am a white person and my wife is latina. One of the things we cherished most about Altadena was its economic and racial diversity, and we want to fully support the rebuilding of Altadena's historic black community.
I lived in Altadena & Pasadena for about 4 years, between 2010 and 2014. I ate at Fox's almost every Saturday. I attended two different churches there. I swam at the Rose Bowl, hiked in Eaton Canyon, shopped at Kings, and every December, drove up Christmas Tree Lane several times. They were some of the happiest days of my life, and I will always think of Altadena/Pasadena, as my spiritual home. My heart is so heavy for those communities. Thankfully, everyone I knew personally got out, but many lost homes. Altadena is home to many of the best musicians in LA. It's a wonderful family community, with good schools and community resources. It's very special ... God willing this community will rebuild. 💯❤🥴
As a black American woman, my heart hurts for all of the families in Altadena. When I hear about the many black homeowners, I feel a great loss for them. I know that the elders were not welcomed in all areas, so this place is very special. It sounds like a multi culture area that embraced all people. I pray for the families and the animals that endured this tragedy. It seems it is always the good people who suffer in our country while the evil and greedy florish. I pray the good people do not lose faith.
This journalist is absolutely one of the best. He really listen asks well thought engaging questions that show he’s worked on the story and wants to understand more. Hari asks relevant open ended questions that allow the person to also think deeply.
This was great. Really helped to appreciate what it’s felt like to live through these fires. As a non-Californian I also don’t know the histories of any LA neighborhoods besides Hollywood and Beverly Hills, so it was interesting to get a recent history of Altadena.
Watching this interview from Sthn Ontario. Such a clear and powerful account of the impact and the history. So touching, those memories of family and the moments leading to evacuation. Having survived is just the first step as recognized. Heartfelt good wishes for your way, for all folks' ways as you experience every day and night onward.🥺❤️🇨🇦
Mr Williams, wow such a great man. Painted Altadena as a special place just as I remember it. With time, patience, and perseverance Altadena and its residents will be back.
What a brave, noble, man, representing the best of humanity. My hope is that his spirit remains strong for his community and family will surely need him.
Just tragic and so glad this gentleman's home was spared. Unfortunately the reality is that this is not a collect your insurance and rebuild in in 12 to 18 months scenario. This is a 10 to 15 year redevelopment project. Most will leave and the only ones that can shoulder the heavy long term costs will be large investment companies. A Blackrock owned 50 unit apartment rental complex is will be this mans new neighbor. Again, so tragic
The man didn't mention that one of the reasons Black families could move to Altadena was because there was no red-lining there. Also, the famous abolitionist John Brown's brother Owen Brown and many of his followers moved to Altadena in the early 1900's. I was born and grew up there and moved back as an adult and we sold our home 4 years ago but it has been destroyed. I hope people who want to rebuild will be able to. Altadena was truly a magical place.
SoCal is in a tough spot. With Property Insurance now super costly, any wildfire wrecks any stabilization of the SoCal property insurance market. I know because I lived and owned a house there for the past 37 years on north OC. We moved recently, but those devil Santa Ana winds are terrible and spawns fires there. SoCal is a beautiful place to live, but becoming more expensive every day. God Bless all of the residents of SoCal.
Please Lord, Please father, hear my prayer, I pray for Altadena, Pasadena, P. Palisades, father may they stay strong La strong. We Love La! We need you right now father to give them hope, strength, encouragement, faith. May they find funds, shelter, food, a new place for now. Open doors for them all these families father for assistance from the state, gov, county, city thank you father Amen. I will continue to pray for Los Angeles, as I was born and raised here. We Love La!❤
Many home owners don't have home insurance or their home insurance got cancelled or they don't have the correct insurance. Dealing with the insurance companies could take years, plus you have to get a permit to rebuild your home and that could take years too.
The building material burned to dust or went up in smoke then resettled. It is everywhere now. How do you really clean that up? How much will be removed from the environment? The whole area for acres and acres is a toxic waste site. 3 to 6 months? I don't know about that timeframe, seems optimistic. The medical effects of such contamination can take decades to appear. Lithium batteries in e cars were burned. Asbestos dust from older homes. I don't know.
🙏 Relocate in groups of loved ones, friends or neighbours and set up temporary settlements, perhaps, away from danger. Saving homes is unpredictable but lives can be saved by early evacuation.
All that matters is that Newsom watched the city burn. And more than that he did everything possible to assure that the effects of the fire would be magnified.
How dare you come on here and spout this foolishness?? If you aren't here, keep your comments to yourself. This man didn't blame anyone and you should just listen.
@ ah, Liz, my dear. I am completely free to express my opinions. Try to internalize that. All that matters is the blame. Can’t undo the damage the idiot gov and mayor allowed to maximize. The not legitimate question is how people who couldn’t get fire insurance did sell and move out.
There is a difference between expressing opinion and knowingly spreading lies. But i am sure that makes no difference to you at all. It must be awful to be so miserable!
@ without the ability to examine reality you all are as much a part of the problem as the fire and the abysmal governance. How does the federal government provide relief when Gavi-boy will not take any steps to mitigate for the future. The CO2 emissions from this fire will equal all cars for a year. Bug let’s have ev mandates and not do fire breaks and forest management.
I hope they lawyer up together to fight insurance companies as a whole group so they can rebuild and replace what was there, not cookies cutter replacements to avoid getting picked off one by one by insurance companies. I'd donate to a Gofundme for them.
The houses are made of wood in CA. They are just as much a fire spreader as the dry brush. A sad story. Areas change, neighborhoods transform all the time in racial and ethnic composition. 2020 Altadena was only 18% black, it was 31% in 2000. It was a dwindling black population the last few decades even before the fire. Hispanic population has grown in Altadena.
Paying tax. Isn't that insurance? A service? This was a total BREACH OF SERVICE. Something that could have been just a minor incident escalated due to lack of leadership and lack of action. Now people whose house was paid off have nothing. This has got to b the worst blunder by any government.
When you pay sales tax on a new car, have you prepaid for automatic insurance for next 25 years-❓❓❓❓❓❓I don’t think so. So where do you get this crazy idea of BREACH OF SERVICE
Where is your compassion, empathy and genuine concern? Who gives a damn about who he voted for? Were you even listening to what this man said? Meteorologists, fire experts and other experts have stated that nothing could have contained fires against 90 to 100 mile per hour winds. Shame on you and all of the other hateful misinformed idiots like you!
This must've been a horrible experience for him and all who lived there. When a fire starts and explosion happens. You simply can't stay . Glad he made it out safe. 🔹🙏

This is a very touching segment. Community is essentially important.

This is a valid concern; you have people move from your community, you loses the neighborhood. It isn't the structures, it is the people.

Totally agree

Such a clear headed yet poignant message.

Churches NOT CHURCH’S

Rebuild with fireproof Hempcrete.

You are a vulture. You have no place here.
What u do 1st is probably start with cleaning up around your block..and help the next block n so on day by day

3 or 4 months and that's after all of the Red Tape.
Why is he using a filter?

Contractors will be coming in droves.
The city is only 20 per cent black
In the past the percentage of Black folks living there was higher back in the day. 20 percent is high for a California community, present day.
and your only 100% upset.
Imagine thinking living in a wildfire zone would mean you’d never have your house burned down by fire? 😂
Contractors are economic players just like anyone else. Unlike the 👎🏿👎🏿👎🏿👎🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿🤟🏿🤟🏿🤟🏿🤟🏿🤟🏿looters they don’t go where no one wants them
