Good points. Fortunately, one year on, there is the Zf full frame with articulating screen, and this lens is less than $1,000 (U.S.) Tough deciding between this and the 14-30 for a similar price. The 14-30 would be my #1 choice easily, but its biggest flaw to me is that cheap feeling plastic external zooming with the ridiculous “unlock to use” design which I personally think is a pain to use. True that the 17-28 doesn’t have VR, but with IBIS on the FF Nikons, it’s mostly a non-issue. So it’s a tough call.
I have the f/4 lens and have been very happy with it. I was tempted by this when I saw the Nikon video though concerned by losing the lower wide end--but you convinced me that there is no reason to change! Thanks!
Last year I actually bought one of Tamrons older wides, the 17-35mm used, paired on my Z6ii, for $420 US. The Nikon 14-30mm is my dream wide lens but now I don't think I'll ever upgrade. It's older but it's optics are pretty dam amazing! If I were coming in fresh for a wide I wouldn't even consider this 17-28mm and for that price, unreal.
In the United States the 14 to 30 is about $150 more than the new lens. But I think I would still pick the 14 to 30 even with it costing a little more. This was a great video, Adrian, I really enjoyed it!
Thanks Phil. It seems we always get the rough end when it comes to photography gear pricing in Australia. I was really expecting something in the $1600-$1700 range. Hoping it'll drop in price over time. It'd be good for travelling I think, but personally I'd rather have that Nikon 20mm F1.8S lens for low light situations, astro and so forth. I think that'll be my next lens purchase for the Z7. Have a great week mate, cheers 📸🙏
Trying to have afordable versions of the primes is good, there's an S for that and we should know the rest will be different (lower quality). thank you for reiewing this lens.
At 17mm you can totally vlog, I’ve done it at 16mm on the Fuji XH2s which is like a 24mm FOV, you just have to use a Joby or alike and can’t hand hold it. But I agree about the price. Even though Nikon outsources to Tamron for the assembly, it’s still Nikon glass and electronics - however the price savings is not enough.
Good video Adrian. I think you got it right, the 14-30 is the way to go. Also, one of your fellow TH-camrs reviewed the 28-75 2.8 and found it to be not as sharp as the 24-70 f4 & 24-120 f4 lenses. I suspect that this one will be similarly soft. Thank you.
That 24-120mm is freakin amazing. I don't own one yet, but I've seen many reviews and for $1000 it's unbelievable. Perfect for group photos, city and landscape, and travel.
It´s an option... and that´s the point: Nikon gives you this option, Canon does not. They´ve got the RF 15-35/2.8 L (big, heavy, expensive), the RF 14-35/4 (small, black corners, expensive) and the new RF 15-30 (small, lightweight, small max aperture, not so expensive)... if you want/need f2.8, you´re forced to buy the L-lens.
I was thinking that I'd get this lens, but didn't realise it was so expensive! The 14-30 F4 would be a better option for most given the pricing, and I'm assuming the weather sealing is also better. I'll wait to see some reviews to see how this lens compares optically. My only quibble with this review is regarding the blogging aspect. That's a function of the current line up of Nikon's bodies and not the lens itself. Admittedly the lens shouldn't be promoted as such given the lack of genuine blogging bodies.
Great run down of the lens and all good points to consider before jumping in. I loved the crazy vlogging examples - too funny and all too true. I wanted to see the hatching turkey chicks - Ha ha.
The specs do look fantastic, but aside from the astronomical price, it looks like they've got a bit of the marketing wrong, focusing on things that they probably shouldn't be focusing on ( vlogging, weather sealing). But back to that crazy price, wow! Personally I don't even look at the Sony lenses more for the same exact pricing issue. Great video as always Adrian! Hope you are doing well. Have a great week down there mate!
Thanks for watching Paul. Have to admit when I saw that price here in Australia I was a bit shocked. I was expecting something around maybe the $1600-$1700 mark to begin with. Maybe it'll drop in price over time? The lens maybe be good for vlogging on the Sony cameras, but that's because they have the articulated screens like the A7SIII and A7IV. As for the weather sealing, yeah well, you saw that. One section it is, then next section it isn't. Hope you enjoyed the game you were at mate, have a great week and take care 🙏📸
G'day Adrian, I just found this video today as I am looking to purchase a wide-angle zoom for landscape work, but can't quite justify paying the same price for a lens as I paid for my Z5. Thanks for this honest and informative look at the new player on the field. I also note that the prices for the 14-30mm have jumped by about A$500 since the 17-28mm was released so they are basically the same, which is nuts. Cheers.
Thanks for watching mate. If ya can hang on for a month the Black Friday sales will be on. That’s when to pounce. Prices are always higher just before the sale 🤙🙏
@@adrianalfordphotography Yep; I bought my Z5 during the Black Friday sales last year and my plan is to come out of the weekend this year with either one of those two or the "affordable" Laowa 12-24mm 5.6, but that feels like a poor compromise.
Hii Adrian, presently the 17-28 f2.8 on B&H is 1196$ and 14-30 f4 is 1346$, so given the price range, which one i should take my first priority is image quality second priority is f2.8 please suggest me. Thank you
Thank you for watching. I'm wondering why the price is so cheap? Is there a reason why they're not selling and have to drop the price so drastically to get sales? As I said in the video, do you really need that F2.8 aperture? If so, then maybe look at the 17-28mm. I do know the image quality from the 14-30mm F4 is pretty amazing and sharp.
Good info, naughty Nikon. I don’t like zooms and really buy them, but someone at Nikon needs to look into this. Not good practice! Thanks for being so objective. TonyH
There are a few good options out there. Personally I'd love to use my 14-24mm f/2.8 on my Z9 as a vlogging lens. The only problem, i can't put VND filters on it. Great video though.
You hit the nail on the head, Adrian. Nikon launches the Z30 but the 12-28mm lens on the roadmap is nowhere to be seen. Now apparently it's a power zoom lens but still nowhere to be seen.
LOL. Great review. When I heard about the lens first, the price described as "affordable" was enough to stop looking at it. Interestingly, none of those who introduced the lens on YooooToooob mentioned the cost of this "affordable" lens. I liked your review. It was very entertaining. Thank you.
Hi Adrian, really a great video! And oh yes, vlogging gear is generally - let's say at least: a bit difficult. I'm waiting for three years now that I would get an affordable but also not too heavy vlogging camera from Sony, which fulfills my requirements. When it was Sony, it would allow me to have (with my vlogging camera) a 2nd body with me, just for the case. At the moment I would need to have 3 cameras with me when we count the vlogging camera as well. The vlogging market is definitely growing, but I think it is anyway too small to get that consideration we would wish. Till that I will have to be satisfied with using action cameras, instead. Interesting that you mentioned the flip screen. Many say it would not be necessary. For me it is. Same reasons you mentioned, but sometimes it is also good to use the front screen to adjust the video composition when there is a drop-off going down behind the camera :) Thanks a lot for this video and enjoy your weekend, Christian
Thanks for watching Christian. I do like vlogging with my Osmo Action as it is super light and has the front screen to see myself. My other camera the Sony ZV-1 is also very good and again has the fully articulated screen and is light weight, but not the widest lens unfortunately. Have an awesome weekend buddy, cheers 📸🙏
Hello Adrian, thank you for all the work you put into your videos. I was wondering if you ever did a comparison between the Nikkor 16-35mm f4 and the 14-30mm f4 S lens on the Z7 ? I can pick up the 16-35mm used for about 1/3 of the cost of the newer 14-30. Thanks again.
Hi Tony - I haven’t had the chance to do a test on the Z7 together. However I did do the test with the 16-35mm on the D850 and 14-30mm on the Z7 side by side.
