This is a good into to a great walk. I have done this walk twice. Years ago as a freedom walker but last time with Ultimate Hikes. Excellent organisation and friendly guides. I could do it over again many times as each walk has different conditions. My first time was in snow and rain, last time no rain but lots of sun. Be prepared for anything! Do it while you can!
Hi Mari, thanks for sharing yet another excellent video. Love all the packing videos. I find when I am packing for anything now, I start to think, "what would Mari do?" LOL. Actually, I have really found your packing videos a big help. My problem is always having the bags to heavy, as I tend to pack too much. One thing that I do when packing, I have a sample list of what to pack on a computer file, which I just print out. Then I can just add or subtract anything that connects to that particular trip. Once I pack and tick off the list, I can really guarantee that nothing has been missed. Wow!! You keep things in separate bags like I do. Well done!! The ideal thing would be to have all colour coded bags, but that is easier said than done. I definitely need to get a good water bottle. I only have a plastic bottle at the moment. I recently purchased a miniature radio and digital recording device, which is great for my long distance radio hobby while travelling. Anyway, take care. Robert.
This is such a great video - we are booked to do the same hike in January 2023 and I am already stressing out what to pack! Thank you Mari - this is a great help! One question - would you recommend packing a swimsuit?
Oh nice, that's exciting! Hm, I don't think I would bring a swimsuit personally, just opting to wear my sports bra and shorts if the weather was nice and there was a good opportunity to swim. But it's personal preference!
Great advice! I am actually planning on doing some hiking in Mt. Rainier, but for a day at a time. Mt. biking also. How many days straight did you do that hiking trip for?
They're actually men's (I have big feet haha) and I couldn't find any in NZ in my size women's, but maybe they have similar ones for women? amzn.to/28LChkA
Did you have to pay extra for that? Like did you pay for a stay there even though you were staying on the mountain? This is video is super helpful thank you!

+A. Olaer nice! It was hiking for 3 full days.
Did you pack your own food and cooking utensils?
Are you referring Lodges to huts? 😊
No, the lodges you stay at with Ultimate Hikes are very different than the DOC huts on trail!
Awesome!!!
Hi Mari👋🏾
What was the brand of hiking boots you showed in this video? I like the style of them 😇
They're actually men's (I have big feet haha) and I couldn't find any in NZ in my size women's, but maybe they have similar ones for women? amzn.to/28LChkA
+Mari Johnson Thanks 🖖🏾
Thanks for the advice. We leave in 5 days...
Have so much fun!
Where did you store the rest of your stuff while you were at Milford Track?
+Emily Aranha at the hostel I was staying at before and after the trek. Most accommodations will store luggage with no problem.
+Mari Johnson that's awesome, thank you!
What hostel did you stay at?
Did you have to pay extra for that? Like did you pay for a stay there even though you were staying on the mountain? This is video is super helpful thank you!
is it ok to trek alone?
Yep! It's super safe. Just make sure to check the weather beforehand and to be prepared!
Did you typically just get your merino wool clothing off amazon and where do you buy thermals?
+wanderback I bought them all here in New Zealand, but it probably would be cheaper on Amazon!
