Actually that’s because the question serves a purpose against him. Everyone knows the answer to it, even the senator himself says that the company is an affiliate group that would fall under the category of TikTok’s policy.
The question serves to lead the argument against him. It is not a simple yes or no answer as the senator tries to make it out to be. World isn’t black and white. The question serves a purpose for the senator and he doesn’t wish to simply lay down his head and answer a question that hurts him no matter what answer he gives.
The question is pushing towards a larger narrative and conclusion, that is meant to favor the senator. And that narrative should be based on a simple questions of yes or no?
He’s pushing towards the idea, that tiktok is handing over information to this Chinese organization, just because they are affiliated with them. And him answering that “yes we CAN, share the information, we collect to this group, according to our policy” would give birth to the idea that, since they say they can share the info, they think they are allowed to do so and they would if they wanted to. Otherwise they would have said in their policy that they won’t be sharing this info.
Fact that the senator asked a question about the biometric information (intending to twist the truth using an yes or no question.) being said to be collected in their policy, WITHOUT asking if it was being collected in the US shows that he was pushing towards a certain narrative. As it’s pointed out, they aren’t collecting biometrics from the USA, if it was simply answered yes or no, we would have known that, until hours later when he got to speak. And other questions that would push the senators twisted narrative given, that all his questions were answered in yes or no.
He would get his time to speak, but unwillingness to hurt himself isn’t evidence that he is lying. Nonetheless, it’s stupid to defend yourself while being questioned. You’ll get your time to defend yourself.
He’s giving an answer that favors him. Which shouldn’t have been done. He should have clearifed the twisted nature of the senators questions later and said what he wanted later on.

I never said it was a trick question. I said that he wasn’t lying. He was dodging answering the question, because the senator was pushing towards the idea that tik tok thinks It’s okey to share that information.
And as I already explained questions were asked in order to sight the senate against him. The question were asked in manner that would guarantee that to happen and it’s obvious he would want to include as much info in his answer to avoid that from happening. He wasn’t hiding anything, in fact it was the senator who was trying to exclude information from the answers to serve his purpose, info that was relevant to the case and wouldn’t incriminate.
As I said, way it was handled was idiotic and he should have said yes or no. And just corrected the senators questions and answers later, when he would be allowed to speak.

There’s always some broader narrative being pushed. The same was happening here. Everyone is allowed to push their narrative… so the senator was as well.

Sworn statements made to Congress carry more weight than one's made in court because you are testifying to your fellow citizens. My point was that every one of these witnesses seems to have graduated from the Jen Psnarki School of Circling Back and Giving Non-Answers. This needs to change. The representative asking the questions is doing so on behalf of their constituents, and anyone refusing should be compelled to answer by facing consequences. After Cruz had spent a long time going through the legal documents of Tic Toc and doing a LOT of research, he asked "hey, technically, your policy is you can share private information with your affiliates" *this* in it's own should be a worrisome policy. But also, He found damning information on some of their chinese based affiliates.
Of course, this makes them look bad. But usually companies spend lots of time, money and a team of lawyers to write up legal documents and plan a long time, so these things do matter, because why would they add that in their policy unless they intended to profit off of the private information, be it selling it to corporations for marketing to sell products or to foreign countries for whatever purpose.
Cruz is pointing this out and these practices are, well, the public would not be happy to learn this, let's just say.
Yes, it is a got you question, but if they didn't put this in their legal policies, it wouldn't be a problem now would it? And he can say "we don't do this" but the issue remains. He is not asking if they share the info, he says "you can technically, share info with these specific companies that you are affiliated with, correct?"

If the company is truly well intentioned, this man would be transparent and answer "yes", then, following this hearing, Tic Toc would modify their policy to add something like "we share to all affiliates within the united state, for marketing purposes and not to affiliates base in foreign nation." or something like this. But i doubt we will ever see this.
Usually, when someone points out an error or issue about how you do things, the mature and transparent thing to do is admit the possible issue and correct it.
It appears that this man was more concerned about appearance than doing the right thing.
And your post has totally missed the point. You seem to condemn Cruz actions as if he was being sneaky. But, it is his job, as an elected official, to represent the people and protect them from possible harm. So he combed over Tic Toc policies and found some disturbing things that should be corrected for the people's privacy.
You do not understand his intent. What he is doing is very good. He is not messing with the Tic Toc representative and trying to gotcha, he has read the info and is bringing up worrisome points about their policies and potential issues.
Everyone else here seems to understand that, this man not anwsering honestly and correcting the policy and putting a good foot forward to move on and make tic toc update policy etc, is disturbing and making the company seem even worst. The company that produces no good or service for the community, but instead is an online platform with users, that sell those users information to make money off it, has a policy that allows them not only to sell the info to companies selling goods but also foreign government, This is standard policy to have a loose ToS that could allow this and it's not their fault.

For instance, it might lead to an updated privacy policy for US citizens that legally forbids Tik Tok from sharing their information with affiliate based in non-US countries. I'm interested to know why you see this as a bad thing? Without that gotcha answer, Tik Tok could legally give all that data to a Chinese organization that doesn't have a privacy policy with US users and give it to governments, terrorists, or shoe salesmen.
