Yet speed isn’t everything. A huge common misconception.

@@kilipaki87oritahiti I remember being told by a number of Tahitian teachers that Americans valued speed generally

@@manaih5652 Not just the US. Common misconception that a good Fa’arapu is fast. Also people forget Ori Tahiti is not a one step dance. You can have a fast looking Fa’arapu, doesn’t mean it’s technically correct, or “big” enough, which you only get by bending low enough and has loose hips. Also everyone’s Fa’arapu will look different due to their body shape, technique etc. So many wants other people’s Fa’arapu yet seem to not grasp this. Fa’arapu is actually nothing the hips at all, but comes from the core. A proper Fa’arapu is done by using the stomach. Speed comes from strength and how fast the knees are being shifted. They didn’t teach this in the US until not that many years ago. I started dancing late, in my early 20’s. Self taught, but taught professionally years later. Back then I watched dancers, mainly in the US compete, and mimicked what they did. I have no former dance experience or training. Now-days it’s more like how it’s done with Tahiti, the theme and storytelling rather than focus on just technique. And even though the dance like Tahitians now, most Ori communities outside of Tahiti it self, has their own particular style or dance different.
