  • Showing that even expensive guitars can have serious issues out of the box. All guitars - no matter what brand or price point - need to be adjusted and set up to ensure playability.
    At FirstGuitar.com each guitar is hand selected and goes through a meticulous inspection and set up process.

    I've bought many guitars from Sweetwater and had to setup everyone of them. The only one I've purchased that I only had to adjust the intonation is my Gretsch. The 55 point check is not a setup if it's even done. You can if you don't know how to do a setup request a complete setup and they'll quote you an additional price to do one.

    It’s best to pay the extra $200 for them to adjust frets, bridge, truss, neck relief, and your preferred string height and gauge before they ship it. Otherwise, you never know what’s going to show up. And most local stores aren’t going to have exact model you want. I know it sucks, but it’s still the best option (unless you want to do all that work yourself lol)

    this is well under 1000 dollars...this is the lowest end model in the JS series.

      Current street price is $800. Most people buying an $800 guitar would assume it is in playable condition out of the box.

      John fedele thats not an excuse, $800 is already a huge amount of money..just like the other guy whos says the gibson flaw is not really flaw, he said "you just need to know how to set it up properly" he said you have to file the nut and change the tuning pegs..that dude is STUPID!! you bought a $2,000 guitar and you have to file the nut and change the tuning pegs???? BULLSHIT...hahaha..

      True, it is under $1000, but at around $800 +tax this is still not a cheap guitar. This is considered a mid-range guitar as it's the cheapest JS just like you stated. Personally i'd rather try to find a nice condition used guitar locally (which can take quite a while if you are searching for a specific model) as i like to try out guitars before buying. Then you might be able to find something that was high end years ago & is still made better then any newer mid-range guitar available today & worth more money in the long run too, if you ever decide to sell it that is. It just depends on finding one, the condition, & price.

    • @firstguitardotcom

      Current street price is $800. For most people, $800 is a lot of money to spend on a brand new guitar that isn't in playable condition.

  • @bestplans9051
    @bestplans9051 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

    The point he's making is simple, regardless of the brand, price or name, it doesn't mean it's setup properly. The guy I purchase mine from is a long time reputable dealer and thoroughly goes over every single guitar he sells and charges for it but I know when I take it out of it's case it's ready to go, no questions!
    Buying from a catalog retailer you're going to get basically whatever came from the factory with a few tweaks. Sorry but that's a fact.

    I bought the Ibanez JS240PS at the same "store" (Sweetwater). The cost was $1700 and it had by far worst neck on a new guitar I have ever seen. There were chips and cracks on the side of the neck. Putty under the ends of frets and the cheap Panga Panga wood was so dry, I couldn't believe it. Fail by Ibanez, Fail by Sweetwater.

      I don't recommend ordering a guitar. I would try it first. I remember a J1000 i tried in a store, it was the best guitar i ever played in my life. It's a shame such expensive guitars come with so many problems.

    I had one of the blue ones. When it arrived volume pot was loose, one machine was rattling and the intonation was atrocious. Needed a full set up. Good guitar though. Sold it on because that trem is never gonna take a few years of serious hammer. Give it the Eddies for a bit and it is gonna need some TLC.

    you have to set it up your self, thats the point, its personal taste when setting them up, some people prefer higher action, some lower. no right or wrong.

    • @firstguitardotcom
      @firstguitardotcom  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, it is personal taste, but it takes time and experience to develop personal taste. The majority of the guitar market is geared toward the low end and asking a beginning to intermediate player to set up their own guitar is not a realistic expectation. Even as an experienced player you would need to learn how to do a setup properly to avoid damaging your guitar.

    Luckily, here in town we have a luthier. The guy is fantastic and affordable. He's been the only person to work on my Ibanez RG470 that I bought in 1993. I recently had him lower the action and do some other adjustments. The guitar plays better than ever. Now, I just need new better quality pickups.

    Sweetwater would not do that. the owner probably messed with it not knowing anything about guitar set up.

  • @jeffrivera6

    i think ibanez dont always check thoroughly their guitars..because ive seen couple of time where the action on the 1st fret is too high..and its because the wood under the locking nut is not properly cut..so the locking nut sits high on the guitars neck/head

  • @Remmyjuniorslash

    What he said is right, I had bought the new Slash Epiphone signature and had the problem. Nowadays the guitars had setup same as acoustic with high action. Very disappointed for the quality I had paid.

    Also where and how was it shipped? Higher elevation places will throw the guitar off. Whenever I buy I a guitar online (from sweetwater), I ask for the guitar to have no strings. I’ll add them and set the guitar up to my specs.

    David Izzy andthe rest..I think you are missing his point. What he is saying is that you need your guitar adjusted. It has nothing to do with SW or GC or even Kmart. What he is showing everyone is even an $$1000 Guitar street value $800 needs adjusted. Dont over think everything

    a real player learns how to make it play how they want. bitching about setup is like a parent buying a bike from kmart and blindly handin it to their kid. when the kid comes home with the handlebars off, and tries to sue, it was sheer ignorance of the consumer. not the manufacturer. i work on gear more than i play, so when i do play it is what i want. cant buy what u want. gotta make what u want happen. good video of heads up to the consumer to not just assume and complain. i get the point
