      Unfortunately one reason why these clips get removed is that his widow keeps an iron fist grip on anything related to Fred Astaire. You still can’t find his movies on home video and that’s even sadder

    The song is called "Puttin' On the Ritz" written in 1927 by Irving Berlin (born Israel Beilin May 11, 1888 in Tolochin, The Russian Empire - Belarus today).

    • @imonthebox1148
      @imonthebox1148 2 ปีที่แล้ว +36

      MsLatvia, Its refreshing to see somebody mentioning the songwriter. Irving Berlin composed over 3,000 songs through his 101 years. And he composed all his songs only on the black notes of his piano in the key of "f" sharp. He also had a lever built at the base of his piano that when pressed raised all the black keys up one octave. Irving Berlin was born in 1888, he died in 1989. As its coming up to Christmas, Ill just throw in that Irving Berlin composed the greatest Christmas song ever. White Christmas......

      I always liked Ginger Rogers response when others it would raise to her about the phenomenal dancer in the talents of her partner, Fred Astaire. She would simply say, “yes, but you should try that backwards and heels!“ Touche Ms. Rogers! That’s a perfect commentary about the condition of women in this country when you think about it. Never paid as much; always have to work harder and better to go up the food chain. If you don’t believe me, think about what happened when they had to re-shoot all of Kevin Spacey’s scenes for the movie, “Money is never enough“ or somesuch. The leading male Mark Wahlberg, his contract offered many hundreds of thousands of dollars per day for were that contingency to occur. Michelle Williams, his female counterpart and one might say a significantly more accomplished actor, was offered base pay I don’t even think I was $100 a day. Mr. Wahlberg was so embarrassed by the difference in pay he donated all of his to charity. Wow.

    Finally after 15 years of not understanding why I couldn’t get the timing of the first verse of this song.
    All the other verses; fine, perfect. First verse, trip and crash 100% consistently. I slowed it down to 75% and sang along concentrating to see what I was going wrong
    ...I was putting in an extra word...

      +Superblobby It'll be clearer if you watch it in full (here: vimeo.com/6971656 ) The jumping cane segments involve a floor trigger mechanism. And the chorus of nine Fred Astaires was achieved by filming two separate versions of Astaire, repeating them four times and interleaving them. Not bad effects for 1946 but absolutely; all credit to Fred for devising and rehearsing this to perfection (took five weeks of, to use his own words, back-breaking physical work).

    • @DerEchteBold

      Effects? You mean the slow motion? I think he actually did that himself.
      The multiplying of his image? Well, alright, I guess you can call that an effect but it probably wasn't such a big deal, they did similar things in earlier days of cinema.
      The main credit has to go to the performer.

    Firstly, not that it matters, but as a young girl growing up in NYC in the 1970's - sexually abused from age 5-12, addicted to heroin from age 14... Fred Astaire was my respite. Spent my allowance going to 80th St. Marks, The Regency, Thalia, and New Yorker Theatres to watch black & white movies in the shadowed safety of those once magnificent crumbling movie houses. I once had the pleasure of watching The NYC Ballet (when George Ballenchine was still choreographer) do honour to Astaire in a performance dedicated to him. The NY Freakin' Ballet honouring a tap dancer !!! Of course he was much more. Song writers such as
    the Gershwins, Cole Porter...wrote songs specifically for him to sing. He was a humble man who thought his singing voice terrible and such a perfectionist in his dance that he refused to watch his films because he could always see flaws... Too bad everyone these days seems to think so damn much of themselves without putting in an once of sweat, blood or tears for their "art". However their is a new generation of tap dancers out there. All over the world, using clips from The Nicholas Brothers to Mr. Astaire to find inspiration - and these men & women do them proud. Blessings for the Bill Robinsons...of our recent past and the kids keeping this American art form alive by sweating and blistering and bleeding for their art. Yet Astaire will always be the master of elegance. Peace & chicken grease Y'all...
