Interesting podcast. Here’s my progression since 2016. Every ride is in Golden Cheetah:
    October 2016, from the couch.
    110kg, 148 FTP, estimated VO2Max in GC 29...
    April 2020, riding 5 000km + per year
    98 kg, 330 FTP, estimated VO2Max from GC 50.
I’m more of a steady state rider, don’t do well with surges but my 10, 20 and 30 min power all above 330 watts.
Losing a few kg, will help me alot :)

I increased my peak ftp by 16W by doing intense short 1hr races over the Winter, instead of slowing right down and losing most of my gains which I did before. And then starting all over again in the Spring. Was frustrating training all Summer and then never being able to break that ftp plateau I'd been stuck at for years.

My first real FTP test was exactly a year ago after few months of training and 3 races(XC). I got 212W(@69kg). 3 days ago I did the same test and got 308W @70kg. Since 2018 I had my whole year planned out and structured + I raced much more this season. Also, I raced XC almost every weekend when I was 11-16 years old and then had a 13 year break, so it was a little less of a learning curve for me when it comes to training (30 yo right now). Therfore 100W in a year is achievable, and I am guessing that someone more talented with prior racing history and knowledge how to train is able to have much more than 100W if he'd start from the couch. I'd say 130-150 W is doable in extreme cases.

I am sure my lack of progress is mostly related to age and the fact I deal with some chronic fatigue. I recently turned 59 and started riding at 58. However, I've done all sorts of activities to improve my FTP. Yet, in a year, my FTP went up only 7 watts, from 157 to 164. Considering the percent error in my power meter, I basically didn't improve. I'm trying to improve my power so I can stay with local group rides. Sure, many are are no-drop rides. However, it's embarrassing that I am the one they are always waiting on to catch up, and I always get that look from others. So, I usually ride by myself because I'm already riding by myself in groups.

It should all depend on the starting points i.e. initial VO2 max and initial AT. A huge gap between those and/or a low starting level should indicate a huge potential in improvement.
A top rider will obviously only be able to marginally improve but it seems like focused training for lowering or increasing Vlamax actually could change things significantly. Eg Andre Greipl that increased his FTP by more than 5% in a single year.

Only five months of riding!? Thats great for a beginner. Our tip: keep training! It often takes years to optimize short-power output, and sometimes, you just cant rush the work. Stick with it! ;)

@@TrainerRoad I started cycling because I was 82kg at 172cm. I was a couch potato then my friend introduced me to cycling. I ride 200km to 350km weekly. Did my first 100km 2mos after I bought a road bike then did my first 200km 3months after that (solo ride) Cycling is so addicting!

Trainer Road, can you help me.... Im a 53 year old dude, who races (poorly) cat 5. I have 2 knee replacements, spinal stenosis, and an auto-immune condition. I cannot make more than 250W normalized power.. I know my limitations. My question is, is it hopeless to even race? I will never place, or even finish upper half of the field. After every ride, Im in excruciating pain at my knee replacements and back. I have a bike fit, etc.

I've never done a proper test and just started in September with any regular exercise due to getting a new bike (until then I only did roughly 1 to 2 rides per month in summer) - I've based my workouts of my estimated FTP (Heartrate and an Ergometer) of around 240W at currently 113 kg (down from 125 kg since september but still roughly 20 kg to go) - so most of my w/kg gains will come from losing weight ;)
Currently doing 3-4 training sessions per week, mostly around sweetspot training - let's see what this does for the raw FTP values itself in a few months (however it's not my main goal anyways)

Sounds like you're well on your way towards meeting your goals, keep it up!

202 @ 70 kg October 2019, 240 @ 67 May 2020. Repeated base II due to extra time so starting build in a couple of weeks

    March 25th 2020 (Lockdown start). 80kgs, 279W FTP.
    June 2nd 2020. 80kgs, 331W FTP.
I did a pre-season Kingcycle test back in 1994 and I had the same 330W watts (I suppose a few more watts at peak season) but was 72kgs back then

Ramp test gave me 273, real world tt 253. As my ftp has increased I’ve gone from a 1400 sprint to not being able to break 1k.....

      Hmmm probably a trade off.
I’d choose the better FTP personally.

Crazy how long AI FTP detection has been in the works. 2 years ago they joked about it here.

I have three power meters (KICKR, Stages on TT and road bike). KICKR ftp is 324 W, TT Stages is 305, Stages road bike 280 W. So frustrating to have different FTPs across device. Makes it real hard to frame my gains. Very frustrating.

If you use TrainerRoad we have a feature called PowerMatch that allows you to bypass your KICKR power and base your power and ERG targets soley on your power meter. This helps keep things the same between inside and outside. As for the difference between TT and road bike, this is somewhat unusual because typically, athletes can produce more power on their road bikes since they are in a less aggressive position. You may simply be an anomaly, or one of your power meters is a bit off. I would be sure to zero calibrate your power meter each time before using to adjust for the ambient conditions.

@@TrainerRoad Cool, thanks for letting me know about PowerMatch. I'm close to ditching Zwift and going (back) to TrainerRoad. I've been really impressed with these videos. Regarding the two Stages - I actually took the road bike into the Stages factory (I live near Boulder). They swapped the Gen 2 unit for a Gen 3 and said they verified the power reading (promising +/-3% accuracy). The one thing I haven't done is bring the TT bike to the Stages factory for the same testing. An FTP of 280 (and weight of 91-95 kg) would imply < 3 W/kg. If that was my real FTP, I doubt I'd even be able to hang on in a cat 4 crit! I think 305 is the real number; it would put me at ~ 3.3 W/kg, which is in line with "Average cat 4"

I went from 178w ftp at 92kg to 300w ftp and 77kg in 6 months after a 15 year break from cycling. I had many years racing before I stopped but no real serious interval work before now and I have no idea what power output i had before I stopped. I am currently 44 years old and aiming for 325w ftp and 72 kg to give me 4.5 w/kg. No reason other than something to aim for to keep me motivated.

Just thought I would give everyone an update on my progress. I am now at 339 watts, 72kg and 12% body fat which is 4.7w/kg exactly. It has been about 18 months since I started training back in May 2019. I have recently set record power numbers across the board from 5 min to 90 min (some without trying) so I don't believe my gains have stopped yet. I have no doubt that 350 watts and 70kg are attainable within the next 3 - 6 months so I am targeting 360/68 for 5.3w/kg by the end of 2021. My wife says I am getting too skinny so 68kg might be pushing it but I think I have it to lose. There is no reason I am aiming for these numbers other than it keeps me motivated to train and I am getting fit in the process. I have had no racing as I have been in lockdown in Melbourne Australia most of the year so these gains are all from indoor training. It is so strange to be seeing these numbers at my age as I spent all my youth as a track sprinter. My focus was on races of 200 meters to 2000 meters in distance. Possibly the lack of a coach in my junior days that may have noticed I have some level of endurance worth pursuing. My loss i guess. It is also worth noting to anyone else my age (44) that I do need a few extra rests days here and there. I was over training early on. Listen to your body and keep an eye on your HR. If you need a rest, have one :)
