    I've just watched like 30 different egg washing machines on YT, and seems like this is one of the best models out there for mid-range raisers (people with several thousand chickens, not 100 or 1 million). Thanks for the video, guys!

    I'd think that packing the cardboard containers could use the vacuum system, too. Little more play with orientation, but could help them go even faster!

I haven't started my hen/egg journey yet, but I will soon. I think 1,000 is way too much right now... 6 ought to do. :) Lol.

    Note: The government requires these eggs be "washed" before packaging and offering them for sale. Washing them removes a natural coating that seals out oxygen and protects the eggs (and chicks) from all kinds of nasty mini-micro bugs. As a result, the eggs age/spoil more quickly. On the farm ages ago we just dabbed off dirt spots and put them in a wire basket in a refrigerator or just a cool, ventilated area. They lasted many more weeks comparatively. The filthy eggs were used ( or frozen !!!) soon after a thorough wash.

      Terry Russel unwashed eggs dont need to be refrigerated. Washed eggs need to be refrigerated. Washed and refrigerated they can last a pretty long time. How do i know? Experience.

    Bro, Washing damages the protective layer (cuticle) in the egg shell. Especially in the eggs washed in cold water, the microorganisms on the shell surface are drawn into the eggs through the microscopic pores on the eggs. For this reason, the risk of infection increases in washed eggs.

    IF you're looking for idea of what to show, I'd really like to take a peek into the logistics of this whole egg operation. See how you buy that carton packaging. Not where, but mostly in what form it arrives. How you buy feed. How big are the bags when it arrives and how you split into smaller batches to handle every day. I see in this video that in that room you have a lot more than 800-900 eggs you said you collect every day. How long can you keep them before washing and packing. Then I see you load eggs into big boxes and carry them somewhere. Where? How long you store them at the farm and where do you take them? Do you sell them in your store or you sell them to a wholesale buyers.
    I'm a city dweller and farm life is mystery to me. I still can't understand why cows can't just walk up to some 7-11 and eat like normal people. Why do people have to feed them? :-)) But I'm very curious about... well, everything agriculture. I'm not sure how many of your subscribers share my interest, but here's what I want to know. :-) Cheers.

    • @SpandauJerry
      @SpandauJerry 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Right, cuz u wash away that natural protective coating.
      E.g. in the EU eggs are not washed when delivered to the market, you have to do it properly by your own before using, but thus cooling isn't needed.
      In the US, however, they have to be washed and therefore get cooled permanently.

    At what stage does it apply a protective layer of coating that is naturally present at the point of lay that protects the egg from harmful bacteria from entering the shell?

    • @heartlandranchtv4943
      @heartlandranchtv4943 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Commercial eggs in the US are stored and sold in refrigeration units. Also, most people keep them in their refrigerators at home, so there is very little need to worry about washing off the egg's protective coating. My understanding is that in Europe they don't wash the eggs at harvest, but the trade off is that you end up with shit and feathers on your eggs.

    • @chayyap
      @chayyap 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Since asking the question, I realised that in the US it is customary, even a government requirement to wash eggs dirty or not, but I thought it would also be required to apply a protective coat afterward to maintain the natural barrier that is washed off. The refrigeration I heard maximises the the shelf life of the egg, but would be more effective I'd say if it wasn't washed (obviously on condition that it is a clean egg to start with).

    • @heartlandranchtv4943
      @heartlandranchtv4943 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Refrigeration reduces or eliminates the need for a protective coating, and very few people in the US ever get sick from eating bad eggs. Ultimately, our industry moved to a "washed egg" model over the years for various reasons, clean presentation to the consumer being one of them. Ultimately, though, both ways have their pros and cons.

    • @SpandauJerry
      @SpandauJerry 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Funny that no-one was able to mimic artificially that protective coating yet, and apply it afterwards again.

      Hi Arlene, great questions. If you rinse the egg it will remove the bloom. If you just rub the egg with a dry cloth it should not remove the bloom. I don't have information about how to preserve the eggs and how clean the egg has to be before preserving.

    How many chickens do you have (layers) and how many eggs a day do you get?
