I just watched this again. Mick, how can you say this has been in impressive off season. Sure we have Tucker, but probably for just a year. What else have they done that is truly impressive? I can’t see it. I think they’re a moderately better team, and Ricketts and the investors are probably happy with that. I’ll be impressed if they sign Tucker, get another ace, and a good closer, no, great closer. They may yet do something impressive, but I’m won’t hold my breath. Still, I am hoping for a great season. Go Cubs Go.
As soon as I heard the term "investors" I was deflated. Anytime investors get involved profit becomes more important than winning. These investors only care about the fans money, not the fans themselves. Being a Cubs and a Bears fan is not much fun anymore.
Reply of the year! The fans need to just boycott going to the games and not pay for that ridiculous channel. Why pay, when you can stream it for free? Either sell the team or build us a winning team! Shits getting old.
In some ways, I can understanding wanting to save a little bit now, because there is always a chance that the team could get an offer they can't refuse and they need to make sure they have room to do that. I wanted to see Bregmen or Burns come to Chicago but, that would put the Cubs dangerously close to the luxury tax. That doesn't leave much room if another good player is available by the trade deadline.
One of the publications showed (along with Forbes)Cub revenue at 506mil and only spending 46% of yearly revenue on players salaries.. that is way low compared to many teams
I think the guys are doing fine: Boog and JD are solid. I care more about the on the field. Kasper was good too but no one is going to replace Harry and Steve.
Thanks for the forecast! A bit off-topic, but I wanted to ask: I have a SafePal wallet with USDT, and I have the seed phrase. (alarm fetch churn bridge exercise tape speak race clerk couch crater letter). How can I transfer them to Binance?
Cubs have 50 million before they even hit the 1st floor. If they won't invest in the team why should we?!?!? That's what Marquee is, an agreement 🤝 that you're gonna spend the $$$ we spend to build an Elite team every year. We Are Not!!!
I had a subscription to Marquee at the beginning of the season but after 2 months I got rid of my sub because of the sub par play on the field. They don't want to bring in big names and pay them because they don't have enough subs, they don't have enough subs because they don't have that draw. With Kyle Tucker, there's something to get excited about but if he's the only thing they add, in my opinion, a subscription to Marquee just isn't worth it. If they went and got Trevor Bauer, they'd get more subscriptions just because people would either want to see him pitch well and see how he's grown as a person or they'd want to see him fail. Either way, more eyes on the Cubs that way!
I would prefer a owner who doesn't spend so much $$$ on Politics and refuses to spend on even the small things like getting us a Closer. Which has now become a Huge reason this team doesn't win.
I'm not sure why they are surprised that Marquee has been a giant flop. They have no strong personalities on that channel that draw people in. I've always said that they need a David Kaplan type person on the network to be a fan and criticize when the organization deserves criticism. After every loss, the post game show just talks about all the small things that they did well during the game. No fan wants to watch the post game after a loss to hear that, they want somewhere where they can see the host venting their frustration like the fans are. Not to mention, Boog is the most boring broadcaster in baseball to listen to. He brings up a bunch of advanced stats throughout the game that the casual fan is not going to understand. If you turn the game on and just listen to him talk without seeing the screen, you wouldn't even know it's the Cubs' home broadcast. I'm not saying he needs to be Hawk Harrelson levels of being a homer, but show some excitement when the Cubs' do something note worthy during the game. This organization is frustrating. They are so close to being a perennial contending, they just won't spend on the couple of stars they need to put them over the top.
Happ has very little fan appeal. He’s overpaid, has a no trade clause and doesn’t appear to be much of an inspiration in the dugout. He’s a good player making great player money, similar to Swanson. Let’s face it, Jed invested big money in the wrong players.
No stars. Even in the 90s, they had Ryno, Hawk, Maddog, Gracie, later Sammy... they have no stars. Ricketts bet on member berries of 80s/90s-WGN and the Cubs brand itself being the draw. It isn't. If Tom was planning a network, Tom should've signed Chapman to be a "legacy closer" for the team post-2016. He should've signed Big Stick Nick. He should've kept Darvish. He should've signed Harper. Schwarber should've been given a long-term deal. Trea Turner should've been signed instead of Swanson. They should've traded for Soto, not the Yankees. Ohtani should've been signed. ALL OF THESE are missed opportunities. They have no actual "Marquee names" for a network called Marquee. Yankees have names. Mets have names. Dodgers have names. Even the Red Sox kept Devers. Ricketts is still operating the Cubs like they are circa 2013 to 2014 in the rebuild. The dark days. That time is over. The day they won the series AND left WGN in 2019... that was the time to go all-in. Cubs need a Hellcat operation, but Tom's over there telling Jed to put superchargers on I4's & V6's hoping they can compete in the 1/4-mile. It's amateurish. The Cubs should be the 90s Braves of the NLC since 2016. Every year since, there was no reason they shouldn't have been division winners. No excuse.
Has anyone thought about the product (Cubs mediocrity), and the voices(boog), talking about the product, could possibly have anything to do with the success of Marquee selling subscriptions? Or advertisers not wanting to be connected to the product? You gotta put time and money into it, to get a return on it.
@Georgeglinos-bh8wy I agree with you. I can't stand listening to Boog; he is the worst Cubs announcer in my lifetime (52 years). Marquee as a product is ok.
I gave up on listening to Boog's nonsense. Poor Jim D. is stuck in the booth with him. Pat & Ron rule. I sync my SiriusXM app audio to the Marquee feed whenever possible. "If you have the means, I highly recommend it." - Ferris
They are waiting for Sasaki to make a decision, then they will decide if they wanna trade for another starter, such as Cease. The only thing they need to do quick, is sign Tanner Scott, we need a big lefty in the bullpen. Maybe his contract demands are ridiculous, but so what, we have to win NOW, in 2025.
Cubs should have hired Chris Myers. Cubs are not a serious team when it comes to winning. Getting rid of Cody was ignorant but they used the "savings" to sign 2 catchers, a relief guy who pitched 20 innings last year, and a number 5 starter. Yet they gave Cody a contract for 80 Million based on his performance two years ago. Then last year he breaks his ribs and fingers and the wind is blowing in all the time and his numbers were down. You think? Then they get rid of him and now we got Boyd and Shaw to play 3rd who has potential. In other news the Yankees signed ANOTHER ace in Fried to go with Cole. AZ just signed Byrnes for 200 Mil. Boston signed an ace. Dodgers signed Snell, an Ace, to go along with their aces. These teams are serious about winning. The Cubs? I think they spent 6 or 7 Million on a back up catcher. If they are serious about winning and being cheap? They need to do the only thing left which is to sign an ace named Trevor Bauer and pray they get another ace in Sasaki. Otherwise, they will probably win 85 games and miss the playoffs by 3 games.
I don’t think this is an impressive off-season at all. Yeah they got a little better Hitter with Kyle Tucker, take him out of the minute Maid Park ,will he hit in the cold weather . We all hope he can. They’re not that much better ,while the big market teams such as the Yankees and Dodgers are getting a lot better. The Cubs are about the same not much better to me than last year. Does anybody think the Cubs starting rotation is more than average. They don’t have a closer and they struggled to score runs last year!
Who we kidding bud? Aside from Tucker, these guys are toast. These guys can’t buy a pack of gum let alone buy a F’N free agent. Damn Mick. These guys are something else. 😡🤬
Ricketts suck ass man yeah they brought us a championship to Wrigley but i dont wanna wait 10-15 years just for a playoff appearance damn so frustrating
A sports team needs investment into The Team. What else is the freakin point? It’s to win, and you do what it takes to make it happen. Feels like Cubs are under Sears ownership now…let it fail, if it makes us richer. It’s all about the “investors” getting rich and the public? Employees? Who cares. What’s odd about the sports situation…right on Mick…would you not get richer if the team is a winner?
I blame a lot of this on Jed. He couldve gotten better players for the money Ricketts did give him to spend. I dont think giving out $20 Millions dollars plus contracts to Happ, Bellinger, and Swanson is intelligent spending. Before the Tucker signing, the fans didn't even have a jersey to wear. Jed is in way over his head.
I like Jesse, but since 2018/19, he along with many local journalists have become really anti-Tom Ricketts because of his family's wealth. Journalism pay hasnt kept up like many other professions and it's just a fact of life. Now Tom and his family have plenty of money, so I'm not defending him but some minority private equity investors are worried about the cubs profits, when the value of franchise keeps rising? Thats not how PE works, they want the value to rise, not some measly cashflow. Marquee is probably a flop because people are cutting the cord and the cubs tanked in 21-22. Jed hasnt built a team for streaming subscribers yet. That takes stars and top end talent. During the cold of April, only us sickos care about the first 50 games of a season not the mass market, which they used to get bundled into a cable package. Jed has to build a team to create some excitement for fans to care from opening day. I dont think a team full good dudes that are steady eddy solid is the marketing message that converts subscribers. The Cubs dont need even need a $250m payroll to win 90+ games in the central, the brewers have been doing it with $125m. They cant bundle 2-3 guys for 1 solid guy that fits a need? Too many OFs? These older BP guys might not last a 7 month marathon of a season, but they could secure the first 75 games, while the young talent develops and learns from them. That is not nearly as expensive. Theres a AA catching prospect on a team right now, that could be ready by June/July, Jed cant barter some players for that? Again doesnt cost payroll, its costs prospects maybe some MLB talent that should be replaceable if you have this vast farm system and "smarts" on player development and scouting If you're going to be cheap, you trade Taillon and not sign boyd and let Jordan Wicks and Cade Horton sink or swim, but they are spending so if they cared about profits, they wouldnt allocate payroll to 2 guys that dont sell tickets or subscribers.
Signing Castellanos worked out fine for the Reds. Great production. Phillies-era has been "ok". Schwarber has become his generation's Adam Dunn, an RBI, OPS-machine, despite the K's. Harper looks like a bargain now for the Phils, but we'll see the 2nd-half of his contract. Ohtani looks like a bargain now. Again... missed opportunities. Being cheap & smart sometimes causes you to miss out on good deals, because you're constantly waiting out for great deals... that never come.
All the money they make.. winter classic and college hockey.. concerts when they're outta town.. college Football games.. soccer games.. I don't buy the BS. Ricketts has turned into a bad owner. I've lost all respect for the organization. Why I never go to games anymore
If they want the Marquee Network to make money, change its name. Put the Cubs name in the name: The Chicago Cubs Network. Next, and more importantly, have true Cubs fans broadcasting the games which Jon Sciambi is not. He’s boring. No real excitement for the Cubs. It’s a shame the Rickets family bought the Cubs. How can they not be making a ton of money off of the Chicago Cubs? Instead they are worrying about spending money. It is amazing. Maybe Dad was the businessman.
I am a Cubs fan in SC because of WGN. There are many of us
Thanks for taking time out of your vacation to chat with us, Mick. 🎵Go Cubs Go🎵
Ricketts and Hoyer are trying to tell the fans that they have NO money. The Ricketts family should sell the team.
Better product on the field and marquee would get subs

I am disappointed they didn’t go after Burnes. The Dbacks got him now! I hope they consider trading for Castillo or Alcantara.
Dump Marquee Now! I don't need Cubs 24 hours a day. A Cubs game and pre/post is plenty.
The TV network would make more money if the team actually played better. 83 wins in back to back years tends to drive away viewers.
