    The last thing I ever heard my mother sing! She had dementia quite badly but had sung in quality chamber choirs my whole life
    Somehow she managed in the choir beyond reason or rhyme
    Bless her, Nancy

      Dementia is a cruel disease, but at least she could enjoy this piece. Memory is a powerful thing that most don't even consider until they start having issues. I hope you are ok now, I know how badly it affects the relatives. As the next comment says it must be a hard piece to hear and yet I suspect it's also strangely comforting. Peace.

      I’m sorry to hear of the loss of your grandmother, but very glad you heard her sing this impossibly beautiful piece! As a lifelong chorale singer I can only hope to remember and be able to sing this in my even older old age - I’m 70 now- and sang this several times with my choir in Scotland, the first time Morten Lauridsen was with us.. Such simple words, and such beautiful notes…yet we all are brought to tears. Much love. I hope you can now remember your grandmother fondly and with less pain… ❤

    In December, 2002, our family sat in the front row and listened as the LA Master Chorale performed this work flawlessly. We were there with our Gramma, whose life passion was choral music...and who had terminal cancer. We knew it was our last Christmas season with her. This piece -- reduced us all to sobbing messes. Two months later, we played it at her memorial. Fifteen years on, I still ugly-cry whenever I hear this. .......Miss you, Gramma.

      Take comfort in knowing that you loving grandmother is in heaven along with, amongst all others, Paul Salamunovich -- who premiered this piece with the Los Angeles Master Chorale in 1994 with a stunning performance and -- according to the composer himself -- was the person to whom this piece was dedicated.

      Carrie,
      Thank you so much for sharing your thoughts and memories with us. It is beautiful and having had the joy of singing this piece with a 300 member choir, it was a spiritual experience that brought me great joy. I’m sure your Gramma (in Heaven) loves it when you think of her when hearing this song. God bless you. ❤️

    WOW what a piece! Christian or no this touches your soul. And "SheetMusicVideo" thank you SOOOO much for the timing of the page turns, as a semi-pro musician it's so refreshing to be able to read the sheet music and have the page turns in the correct places. This truly is "Godly" music. Having recently been bereaved this piece has brought me solace and peace, alongside uncontrollable tears and sorrow. It's amazing how music can just speak volumes about emotion. I imagine Angelic choirs will sound like this to smooth the transition from this world to the next. But whatever your views or beliefs this piece embodies all that is good in humanity. Thanks so much for posting the sheet music it allows us musicians to see just how this masterpiece has been constructed. 👍 A painful, but uplifting sound.

      Clare : Yes, I know what you mean. For some years, I sang the lowest bass part in this lovely anthem in my church choir; and it was always a struggle to keep my emotions in check. Now, at 80+, my singing days are over (except in my heart); but hearing this lovely anthem again brings memories of Christmas Eves past to my mind, warmth to my heart, and tears of joy to my eyes. Alleluia!!

    I sang with the loyola marymount university choruses in the mid-90s when this piece was composed and performed frequently by the Los Angeles master chorale under Paul salamunovich whom I sang under in lmu. We sang pieces like this one all the time. And it took me years after Paul's passing before I could listen to piece like this one again. And even not, pieces like this one always bring me both joy and tears. I feel the joy because of the beauty of the music and the great memories I have singing. I get tearful because I may never be able to recreate beautiful music like the way we did under Paul again. RIP Paul.

      Music, specially this Music, is a gift from Almighty God, in this particular piece, the text expresses the Mystery of The Incarnation in The Virgin Mary by the power of The Holy Spirit of The Only Begotten Son of God, my Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, may God The Father give you all to Him, so you all can also be saved, love and obey Him, hence, after this short life on this earth, have Eternal Life and live in His Glory forever, Amen

    Many years ago I got into my vehicle, switched on the engine and Classic FM UK.was playing this piece.It was half way through and I switched off my engine and thought this is Godly music, and found out who wrote it.Since then I've listened to so much more of the human voice singing.The bible says that God sings and dances over us,He thought of singing and dancing first.What does worship around sound and look like around the throne.One day I will be hearing, singing and dancing around the throne.

    One of the keys to understanding the liturgical aspects of this piece is to know its position in the Christmas Eve liturgy. Alleluia is forbidden during Lent and Advent so it is not said or sung in the 4-5 weeks leading up to the moment of Christ's birth. O Magnum Mysterium occurs in the liturgy at the very moment of birth so the first Alleluia @3.40 is the announcement. Lauridsen's first declaration is mezzo-forte then forte which could be interpreted as a mistake by the angels being too excited at the birth of the baby. So it quiets. Then it resumes mezzo-piano @6:03 diminishing to pianissimo. There are many more settings of O Magnum Mysterium from Victoria to Poulenc but none touches me as much as Lauridsen's.

    Magnifique découverte ! Merci ... DF (France)

      Pussy! :P
      Get a few of basses that can sing that and enjoy a whole new variety of songs, especially from modern composers (such as Withacre and Lauridsen) and 19th century Russian composers (Chesnokov, Rachmaninof and the others). You won't regret it. ;)

      Javier Martin If you want low Bs, you should definitely check out Chesnokov and similar composers, and also look into orthodox male choirs.

    Lauridsen is a very gifted composer. As someone who also has The Gift of being given Songs/Harmonies/Rhythms from a Higher Place to share with humanity I find myself poring over the scores of pieces I love Trying to discern What It Is that makes a piece Tick, whether it’s a certain Chord Voicing, or a certain Rhythm, even the usage of a certain combination of instruments and/or voices. But there’s nearly Always a Hook (a Jazz term I guess; not that it makes any difference). But listening to this piece just now (for the 317th time) I found myself following the 2nd Tenor line (I’m either a 2nd Tenor or a Baritone, depending…) and for anyone curious about The Hook, ITS NOT IN THAT PART…. As. Matter of fact, that part is hard to follow; its so nondescript. But there’s Something in that part I don’t Get.

    • @NuggetEternal
      @NuggetEternal 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Basically it's just an F# minor chord with a G# passing non-chord tone. It's awesome

    • @Bullard6311
      @Bullard6311 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Raymond Alcantara You are half right. It depends on what the composer was intending. It could also be an F# minor with an added 9th.
