  • Into The Woods starring Meryl Streep, Emily Blunt, Johnny Depp, and Chris Pine is reviewed by Ben Mankiewicz (host of Turner Classic Movies), Matt Atchity (Editor-in-chief Rottentomatoes.com), Alonso Duralde (TheWrap and Linoleum Knife podcast) and Christy Lemire (www.ChristyLemire.com).

    "Into the Woods" is a modern twist on several of the beloved Brothers Grimm fairy tales, intertwining the plots of a few choice stories and exploring the consequences of the characters' wishes and quests. This humorous and heartfelt musical follows the classic tales of Cinderella (Anna Kendrick), Little Red Riding Hood (Lilla Crawford), Jack and the Beanstalk (Daniel Huttlestone), and Rapunzel (MacKenzie Mauzy)-all tied together by an original story involving a baker and his wife (James Corden & Emily Blunt), their wish to begin a family and their interaction with the witch (Meryl Streep) who has put a curse on them. So Matt is acting like the stage play was some X-rated musical that's completely dark and inappropriate. No, the messages in the film still hit you and other than that complaint, he didn't go into depth at all about why it was "terrible" because he didn't care.

    • @LicoriceLain
      @LicoriceLain 9 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I wouldn't say X rated, but there was a ton of innuendo.

      Matt didn't like it because they changed the themes that made the play so good.

      JozieLeePro They really didn't. The dark themes were still there as well as the magic. They just toned down the sexual overtones on some of it.

      I thought more was missing than just the sexual themes. The funny beats in the musical that they left in, fell flat in the movie. The irony and wit was gone, at least for me.

    "Eleven year olds" Well, Dan is fifteen, but okay. Yeah, Lilla singing about the Wolf was a bit creepy still, but Dan's "youngness" could be overlooked way more than Lilla.

    I keep hearing from people that they hated what came after the ever-after scenes in the movie and after hearing the info from the 2 in this vid who knew of the original play it makes sense. They didn't show/hint at enough of the more grounded/darker tone that would be coming. It makes the later scenes make less sense. I like musicals but I found this one to be just ok.

    I've seen a kids/teens production of Into the Woods that was more mature, realistic, and dark than this popcorn movie version. I hate this "kid friendly" idea. How long are we going to keep belittling children? How long are we going to try to shield them from the world? (sorry for the quote) But seriously, sex, violence and death are parts of life. They can handle it. An eight year old I babysit is reading Hamlet. He loves it and he gets it more than some kids in my University. We need to stop treating children like they're mindless fragile idiots, and then maybe they won't grow up to become mindless fragile idiots!

    imo, the main two issues with this movie is that it didn't translate well to screen and they didn't go further with the darker elements of the show.

    I don't know what movie they saw. I saw the original stage musical as well. The movie really stays true to the dark aspects of the story. Treating these characters like real people? Check. Sexual Awakenings? Check. Real peril and danger and threats? Check. True that the kids are actual kids int he film, but that doesn't take anything away from their stories. On the contrary, the sexual awakenings, especially for Red Riding Hood, seem more real. And the way Depp plays the wolf is very much like a sexual predator. I thought the movie really did go the distance with the dark aspects of the story. So much so, that many closed minded people have come out outraged by the movie. I think Atchity went with a pre conceived notion that since Disney was doing this, it wasn't going to be as edgy or whatever, but, other than the fact that there are less deaths in the film, it really does stay edgy.

    Let me just point out that Lilla Crawford is 13 soon to be 14 and Daniel Huttlestone is 15 to me the fit perfectly still young enough to fit their (traditionally) child roles and old enough to keep the innuendos. Just to be clear when I say traditionally I mean the fairytale not traditionally for the stage production the original cast Little Red was 16. I'm aware that not everything remained personally I missed Rapunzel's death and the princes ending up with sleeping beauty and snow white but overall they kept it as true as it was reasonable to expect. it was a musical about fairytales being adapted by disney to expect that parents wouldn't assume they could bring children to it is ridiculous they had no choice but to tone it down for the audience they anticipated.

    I expected that I wouldn't like this movie, but I actually really liked it. All the actors had great voices and the songs had a great tune to it. I really liked Emily Blunt in this movie and Meryl Streep but they were all good!

  • @warrenmoore4743
    @warrenmoore4743 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Um, Little Red was the same age on stage. Snow White and Sleeping Beauty were merely "mentioned" in the stage version (no reason for them in the film) It's blatantly obvious that the guys do NOT know the stage version, maybe "heard" some parts "about" it....but they do not know the script. It's obvious. Don't comment if you don't know the play that you KNOW what was cut out...because barely anything was cut out. The revival, on Broadway, Little Red WAS eleven. You don't know what you are talking about....on Broadway, they merely kissed and there were just implications. They never made it OBVIOUS that the wife and the prince had an affair. You obviously did nOT see it. So shut up!

    It's funny about Annie (the movie) coming out the same time as Into the Woods since the actress who played Red Riding Hood played Annie in the last revival of that show on Broadway. She could kill it in both films!

    First of all tons of people know Into the Woods. It's a very popular musical. And like one of the reviewers pointed out and it's also been filmed and was available on Netflix recently. I feel most of the main actors did a great job on this. Meryl Streep just could not pull it off for me. I felt like they just tried to make her scary because they didn't know what else to do either her. She talked through most her songs.

    I have to say this show wasn't softened all that much at all. I was in this a few years ago and still have most of the whole show memorized. They took out No More and Maybe They're Magic, etc, but overall the things they cut weren't the darkest parts of the musical at all.

    Here's the deal. I don't care that much about the parts of the plot they trimmed down. What made this movie a mediocre adaptation (and Matt touched on this a little bit) is the tone. The stage musical is more self-aware---it's in on the joke, but the movie doesn't feel like it is. The show treats violence differently---it's more casual about tragedy, while the movie doesn't have the same harsh glibness. Without that violence missing from the movie, especially in the scene where the giantess shows up, the Witch's reasons to want to let Jack die don't have as much emotional weight.

    I am glad to see that I am not the only one who wasn't in love with this film. It was okay. The cast was good and the music was great, however thats derivative, but the overall production felt underwhelming. The cinematography was uninspired and the editing led me to think they didn't get enough coverage...and this is hollywood! Everything just felt too muted, too gritty but lacking the write amount of umph to make me care! But I digress

    The thing about the affair is, I read somewhere that there was a scene filmed for the movie that better illustrated it, but it was cut for time and to avoid the movie getting a PG-13 rating, since Disney needs to make money off of this for showing it as a family film. Over all, this movie did the musical justice, and if you like musicals you should check it out. If you don't like musicals than don't go see it. And if you're like a couple people I've seen in the comments, and you have not idea what goo music sounds like, than this movie is also not for you.

    I auditioned for this play in High School and it was pretty raunchy still. And because of that I'm familiar with the DVD too. In the movie I only wish they played up the jokes more. This musical is Hilarious! Some of those key funny moments weren't fulfilled by the actors. For instance, after the snogging in the woods the Prince's line of I must leave you should have been said very abruptly. I felt there were tons of missed comedic timing.

    I feel like they just cut Cinderella and Snow White for simplicity and time although, at just 125 minutes, the movie isn't long. I would say Giants in the Sky is harder to sing then On the Steps of the Palace but neither is easy. Sondheim is brilliant but takes an experienced singer.

    I think it was a tonally wierd movie. It became sort of like a post-apocalyptic allegory in the last 45 minutes. It was some wierd stuff at the end. The first half is happily ever after, the second half is when it all falls apart, but I don't think it captured it all that well. I think the second hour needed a little more lightness and if terrible things are gonna happen, why not mean those events and the first hour could have used a bit of satire thrown in.

On Christmas day matinee screening the theater was packed, and so far I see the majority of the audience is loving this magnificent Disney version and very moved at the end (because 'children will listen')...life lessons, etc. So keep arguing away folks...or save your $$ and see the controversial "The Interview" instead...a fairy tale with no singing!

    Overall I'd say that if some group other than Disney did the film it wouldn't have been too different what we actually got here. A lot of the so called edgy adult stuff was cut, I suspect, largely due to a need to shorten the picture from the musical length just like countless other musical to movie adaptions. I felt as an adult viewer that there was certainly a sexual implication to the Bakers wife and the Prince, and honestly enjoy how much they left for the audience to visual what happened. Too often things are shown or said that are better imagined. But that scene left a lot of room to image their betrayal. Some of the deaths weren't portrayed the same as the musical, but you still got the sense that all 4 of the key characters had been dealt a deep personal blow, due to their actions. And that ultimately was the point of their deaths in the musical version. Overall, if anything, the subtitling down of the adult content was more beneficial, because it didn't feel like it was trying to be preachy or adult as the musical seems. Kind of similar to how the Rent Movie seemed edgy enough without some of the musical content.

    Here's what I wrote to my sister about this movie: Saw "Into the Woods" and hated the singing. It's almost all singing and except for one segment, all the songs aren't songs at all but irritating notes that don't relate like some disgusting note salad. I can't believe people green-lighted the melodies to these songs. They aren't pretty. There are no hooks, no tunes that resolve. It's just wandering notes. Talking would have been better. If the actors had given soliloquies like actors did with Shakespeare then I could have followed their thoughts without cringing. The only "song" that was pretty was by the two princes while hanging out at the top of the waterfall. The story was strange. I wasn't ready for it to keep on going after the happy ever after part. The cheating prince was really a shock. But basically, the non-music singing ruined it all.

    • @TheSpiritOfTheTimes
      @TheSpiritOfTheTimes 9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I could hardly disagree with you more. How anyone can say Sondheim's music is non-melodic is beyond me, it's kind of like saying Shakespeare's sonnets aren't good because they're not articulate (the point is that Into the Woods and Sondheim in general is famous for melodies).

    • @Yahziboy
      @Yahziboy 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      TheSpiritOfTheTimes
      I suppose people can disagree on what is melodic. But generally, good songs, songs with original pleasing melodies, get covered and talked about. None of these will be. I'd bet my life on that.

    • @Nickassance
      @Nickassance 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Archie Merwin Let It Go was covered many times and that song was massively overrated and overplayed. So that statement is not true for all. The song could be catchy but not great at all. I find some songs in ITW very hummable. Your Fault, Stay With Me, Last Midnight, Into the Woods Prologue, Children Will Listen, No One is Alone, On the Steps of the Palace and Agony. "If the actors had given solilquies like actors did with Shakespeare then I could have followed their thoughts without cringing". This is a MOVIE, not a play. That happens with plays usually, not film. What do you mean the songs aren't "pretty"? That makes no sense whatsoever. Your "review" just sounds ridiculous to me.
      "The story was strange. I wasn't ready for it to keep on going after the happy ever after part."- That is the whole point of Into the Woods. The consequences of wishes and that not everything is a HAPPILY ever after.
      "The cheating prince was a shock"- How old are you? You sound five. There are TONS of films where this is cheating. As I said, that happens in real life. It's reality.
      "The non-music singing ruined it all", What the fuck are you talking about? There was clearly melodies and music added to the songs. "No tunes that resolve", what?? Your review makes zero sense and it sounds like you didn't pay attention to the film at all and was expecting another Frozen just because it was Disney.

      *****SPOILERS******
      In the musical, Rapunzel became mentally unstable and died. There was a reprise of the song "Agony" where it was revealed that both princes became bored with their women and were already searching for new girls (namely Snow White and sleeping beauty) The narrator was a character (who dies). In the musical, a mysterious man appears to all of the characters in the woods who, at the end of the first act, is revealed to be the bakers father. He then dies, but his ghost(?) reappears at the end of act 2 where they both sing a song, "No More". They cut out "Maybe They're Magic", which is sung after they buy Milky White. And they cut out "Ever After" which is sung at the end of Act 1. They also cut out the Act 2 prologue solely for the sake of flow. The story overall remains exactly the same, besides Rapunzel's and her prince's fates.

    What the hell dirt has James Corden got on Hollywood? I really don't understand why he's getting all these plum gigs all of a sudden. He's mediocre at best.

      I don't think it's surprising, since a lot of British actors enter into Hollywood. I don't really know him but I know that he could sing, like in "Begin Again." But hey, did you know he's replacing Craig Ferguson in the late late show?

    well the only one's in the this film i know of/heard sing are anna kendrick and meryl streep and only ONE of them can sing (anna) so....doubt it has annie beat in that department by much.
    the play is great so i have no high expectations for it so we will see what they do it. based on what you are saying its going to be what i think: a watered down version of the orignal and whats the point in that. got the original play on dvd and will be watching it for the third time after i see this film to compare

    • @Nickassance
      @Nickassance 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you serious? Annie has it beat in the singing department? Gtfoh. You lost all credibility. And Meryl Streep CAN sing, are you deaf? If you want to hear more, the soundtrack is out. And no the film is not watered down. Things are more toned down, but it is still dark for a Disney movie. It's rated PG, of course things are going to be more light.

    • @serenityq26
      @serenityq26 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      learn to read with comprehension. i said that into the woods has annie beat barely cause from my knowledge they each only have one singer, that could change once i see the movie as i said i only have heard two of the actors sing. im not deaf at all but you seem tone deaf if you think what meryl can sing. lol. hwayobi? THAT is a singer. meryl streep? not even fit to do her ah ah ahs. but to each their own. i mean someone has to like the like of the britney spears i guess

    • @Nickassance
      @Nickassance 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      serenityq26 Well you have no knowledge whatsoever. "They each have one singer". It's a whole fucking cast and they sound MUCH better than Annie. Into the Woods has Annie barely beat? You are all kinds of stupid. Meryl Streep CAN sing. Did you not see Death Becomes Her, Silkwood, Postcards from the Edge, A Prairie Home Companion etc. You are obviously deaf if you think Annie sounded better.

    Into the Woods is just like Broadway musical on a small screen
    So just like the song in frozen

    I didn't care for red riding hood. I feel bad for that part but she was a little annoying but maybe it was the character. Meryl Streep Meryl Streeped that shit though. She did so well. I didn't like her death though.

    Not surprised that they "pulled all of the teeth." Catering to the family for sure.
    Christy, I love you girl, but you need to stop tucking your boot cut jeans into your shoes. Untuck and wear over or wear them with leggings or slim cut....c'maan.

      I don't want to spoil it ..but.......
      When the wolf eats the grandma, he eats red riding hood too and then you see some guy rip the stomach open. And it looks gross.
      SUCH A DARK AND SAD MOVIE AFTER A HAPPY ENDING.
      After "happily ever after" the prince makes out with the wife of another main character(THAT HAVE A BABY) and she dies.
      The kids are soooooooooooooooo annoying!!!!!!!
      Especially Jack and Red riding hood.
      Another mother dies.
      A new born baby almost dies.
      A man almost dies.
      The main witch gets sucked up what looks like the depths of the underworld. After she turns good.
      Almost everyone dies at the end

    THE MOVIE SUCKS DONT SEE IT.
    I looked at everybody behind me and they were listening to music with both headphones in their ears. the only thing that made me stay and watch it was the with and emily blunt they made this movie go from 1 star to 2 stars. i'm just saying they talk once or twice the whole thing is singing. 2 hours and 5 minutes of shitty music.

      Agreed, this movie sucks, when it first started I thought they were just going to sing in the intros, boy was I wrong! They sang through the entire movie!, my mom and I couldn't stop laughing at it because it was horrible XD, people left the theatre after like 20 minutes of the movie because it was so bad. I give this movie 2/10 because it was ok at some parts, I also think the witch was the best :) Also, If you like this movie I didn't mean to offend you, I'm just saying my opinion, peace.
