I watched this today, was slightly distracted though by some idiots in my theater. I assume they all probably thought it was going to be some gangsta action film.. because they showed no interest in the film at all. One was on his phone for all most the whole film, he watched porn at one point and listened to music... was dancing like an idiot in his seat. So I'll be watching this again to see parts I might have missed. Don't get why people pay to come to see a film and then just dick about and play with their phone.. if you don't like it, leave and don't ruin it for others.
I really loved this one. Gorgeously shot and OH the score! The music is subtle yet potent and the horns that build toward the end are reminiscent of Chinatown. Love the colour tones and early 80s East Coast winter “haze” that hangs visually like a filter in the air but also in the unease of the characters. Phenomenal acting, particularly by Isaac. Built to a nice crescendo... loved the touch where Isaac’s character went first to the leaking oil rather than his employee. Fascinating little touches all around. And yes, that car chase was a nice surprise yet organic to the course of events! Impressive. Margin Call is an excellent film by this director, I have yet to see his other film but will check it out soon!
@@MoodiFLEX Agreed. I've concluded that the best way to watch movies is to go in as blind as possible. It changes the experience when you remove expectation from the equation - I can just watch the movie without being upset it wasn't the movie I thought it was. I went in blind on A Most Violent Year, and it was extremely rewarding.
The film didn't live up to my expectations, Jessica Chastain had some good scenes but was miscast who didn't have enough screen time, and the ending just felt flat. On a positive side, I loved the cinematography.
Matt said he was a little detached from movie emotionally. I agree on part with him. I think it's important for a movie to have some levity mixed in with the bleakness, the cool atmosphere. There was not really much of a happy scene, except for the birthday, which was disrupted. I parallel it with the movie Se7en. I would think significantly less of that film, if we didn't have the dinner scene where they all laugh. I think this movie needed something like that. That would've set the hook for me I think.
Matt's wife must have said something, because I believe this is three sets of reviews in and I have not seen a Hawaiian shirt. That's crazy. Lol happy holidays guys.
Absolutely agree with this review, for once... Who knew?! This is easy one of the best movies I have seen in years! A smart, well done movie for people with a longer attention span than 3 seconds. Make no mistake this mature storytelling! This movie is a throwback to the the great American movies of the 70's, like "Serpico", "The Conversation" etc. And I would say that Oscar Isaac in his brilliant performance reminds me in a way of young Al Pacino. Unfortunately I think that this movie has been somewhat falsely advertised as a "gangster" movie. And while there might be some elements in it that might remind people of "Goodfellas", and there are clerks running themes about corruption, ambition, greed and violence, "A Most Violent Year" is about much more than that! This movie was clearly spurned by almost all the awards around, which is why I don't care about any, but I don't understand why this movie got wide release in January?! Though it was in limited release, I think it should have been widely released in October or November...it might have gotten more recognition! Oscar Isaac should very clearly been nominated for a Best Actor Academy Award instead of Bradley Cooper, and Jessica Chastain should have gotten Merry Streep's nomination for Best Actress (Merry Streep is at this point filler...and when the Academy cannot think of anyone else to nominate they give it to her for whatever...she could just appear on screen for 5 minutes and just fart...and she'd still get one!). David Oyelowo not only got screwed from a Best Actor nod for "Selma", he now gets snubbed for what could and should have been another potential nomination for Best Supporting actor...as for "A Most Violent Year" it should have take one of the empty spots left in the Best Movie category! But the Oscars are what they are...All in all, "A Most Violent Year" is a solid, intelligent and well made movie which I enjoyed Soo much I ended up seeing it twice in one day!!!! 9 out of 10
Sigh...I meant to say above "and there are clearly running themes..." Not "and there are clerks running themes"...I hate auto-correct and predictive text!
I have a Michael Corleone wibe from Abel. Michael dont want to do anything with the family as Abel dont want to go the illegal path. Good story overall but poorly executed.
Holy shit those scores lol except the 7.5 , definitely deserves the 7.5... NOTHING HAPPENS! Yea the acting, cinematography and all that technical and artistic stuff was pretty damn good, but if youre someone who likes to feel emotionally attached to characters and to the actual story, its going to bore you for about 9/10ths of the movie. the only reason i stayed awake was because i was expecting something exciting to happen. The writers and directors kind of dangle and tease you into thinking something is going to happen. Most exciting thing was a 20 mph truck chase that lasted 2 minutes. just lacked that entertaining factor that a MOVIE needs to be great.
It looks really good! Isaac is one of my favourite actors with Llewyn Davis being my favourite film of last year and I also think Chastain is really good
The trailer said it was a gangster movie. This isn't a Goodfellas/Casino/Carlito's Way movie is it? It seemed like more of a drama, which kinda disappoints me.
I can see where Matt is coming from. Watching this I was very interested in what was happening/was going to happen but not necessarily invested. A good film.
Jessica Chastain's character was really hardcore. She seems like the one who really ran the business. Oscar's character came across as naive. I got kinda nervous when she threatened that guy from breaking up their kids bday party. That just makes them look illegitimate. This movie is uneventful but the acting is good and the cinematography is of course superb. But I need a story I care about to be fully invested.
my wife and i disagree, imagine that, i believe that Able will not help the D.A. with his political aspirations, she believes he will. I believe he will help only based on it being the "most right " choice, which i believe was the theme of the movie.
Jeez, Oscar Isaac is really exploding these past few years, first thing I saw him in was Robin Hood and he was in that Nativity Story movie early on but he's been getting alot of good roles in good movies and now some staring roles seemingly as a dark horse, at least to me, coming up fast but not fast enough for nobody to be talking about it.
I first noticed him in a film called "Agora" which takes place in Alejandría and where he starred next to Rachel Weisz. I think it was in 2009. After that he has not stopped growing.
The movie sucked, but critics and pretentious cinephiles love to praise this boring cinema. I could not believe the whole movie was about buying a piece of property, 2 hours of that and it gets 91% on RT and 81 on the metacritic. You can't trust it anymore.
this movie was terrible, a most violent year? like srsly... Not to mention the ending *SPOILER* , when the latino guy shoots himself..it was for "shock value" and it was DUMB.
Ash Sukumar It has been some months now but I want to tell you that I totally agree with you!! The movie is so overrated!! Is a complete boring cinema. It seems like JC Chandor doesn't know how to make a movie. And believe me, I have first hand reasons to say that.
Casting Jessica Chastain's character was a waste, I was waiting for her to actually do something, whereas all she did was warn people then did nothing.
An Instant Classic! For some of you who didn't like it, they make Transformers, brainless comic book based movies etc...So MOVE ON! Plenty of bad movies for you to indulge in...
Nah man, this has nothing to do with not liking this and being a fan of transformers. That's just reductive nonsense. The film was just outright boring. Compare it to Heat, LA Confidential, a Prophet, City of God etc. How can you find this an instant classic. These reviewers have no idea what they're talking about. People who work and live in the real world, will find this movie rubbish. There is no drama, its just pointless plot and you do not believe in any of the characters, especially Chastain.
Usually I sit on my friend's shoulders and wear a trenchcoat and sunglasses , but my voice is a dead giveaway. I did find a floorplan for my local theater through Google so I will try your suggestion. Thanks!
Also, I feel like the dude at the end unnecessarily killed himself. I mean, maybe I missed something? I will admit, I did look away for a while to play Simpsons Tapped out on my phone.
So boring. Two hours of the Latin style daytime soap opera packaged to appear as a movie. Really no imagination,no budget,no talent in any area,...just crank out product.
look at those scores they all give it a really a high score except for party pooper matt he shits on movies a lot he said he liked it but a 7.5 is kind of like saying meh
Does Matt ever give a film anything above 7.5? He is ruining his own reputation as a film critic my nitpicking every single film he sees. Which he does to make himself look like a better critic in the first place.
during that time street guys used to go into abandoned buildings and siphone the heating oil that was left in those building like in Bushwick. Then they sold it to certain heating oil delivery companies at cut rate prices. Then they sold it to their customers at top prices. That went on for years. Then those same people and other people just decided to hijack heating oil trucks from heating oil delivery companies and resell it to other heating oil companies at half price. It was less work then having to take it out of abandoned building. So some companies decided to arm the truck drivers. Stupid move because the hijackers had guns and were not affraid to use them.
Saw this movie in L A it was a total BOREFEST! I watched several people walk out of the theater. Chastain was overacting again as usual! Totally overrated!
I think you're just upset because you took the title at face value, and unlike Drive, the trailers for this film didn't give you the impression that this was going to be a big action packed movie.
I didn't like it that much, feel like it was overhyped, I know its trying to be like social realism or whatever, but the conflict that Oscar Isaac has with whoever is fucking him over in the film is not that interesting to watch, and watching Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain argue felt like I was watching my stupid parents whom I love very much.
Don't call your parents stupid. Not everyone has good parents. I had an animal for a father left home at 11 to get away from him. Came back at 15 after he was dead to help my mother and older brother. Crazy thing was when daddio died my mother was heart broken. I guess she got used to being burned with cigs?
this movie is ~almost~ a masterpiece
Why almost?

what i thought was weird was the main characters company is called STANDARD oil, and whats his name in Drive? wheres the deluxe version.
Well, I'm glad I wasn't the only one distracted by that.

Those who where actually there and know, and lived it or lived around it can truly appreciate this kinda flick.
Oh and Boardwalk Empire is my favorite show ever made
It took me emotionally, btw. His role, was a role model.
comparing it to Sidney Lumet makes me want to see it even more
The trailer said it was a gangster movie. This isn't a Goodfellas/Casino/Carlito's Way movie is it? It seemed like more of a drama, which kinda disappoints me.
no no no. (Not a spoiler) but it's not that violent. More thriller esque

agreed absolutly over rated just boring!

If I mentioned Lumet made great movies, how is that Transformers?
"A story about a man who runs a waste disposal company" How about watching the film buster
