I actually was maining rubber grip tape for about two years. It definitely halted my progress on a lot of tricks. when the grip tape wore down it became more prone to collecting dust and it became infinitely more slippery. I remembered sessions where I would have to get a wet rag and rub the group tape every 20 minutes. It is a good investment if you want to save on shoes, but the quality of your skateboarding is gonna be really tedious and annoying.
I've been skating DKL for the past 4 years now non stop. Not only have they significantly improved the Durability of the Grip i'm also skating better than i have ever before. It's so consistent.
Rubber grip just causes it to bunch up, even after you poke a hole in it. So in a look of cases it actually looks worse when popped like a flappy bit of skin
It's not worth it, I gave it a good chance for a couple years. It's only grippy for a few sessions and I had some really bad falls from my foot slipping. Buying used but unskated shoes off poshmark/ebay is a good way to save money on shoes plus they're already broken in
I've used rubber grip tape on I think at least 8 decks now and I disagree with most of the criticisms from this video. The one thing I would agree with this video on is that rubber grip tape is not as easy to apply to a deck as sandpaper grip. But, in my opinion, that is a minor inconvenience and something that I've gotten better at with time. Using a sharp razor blade (not a knife - I don't know if that was a joke or not) and following the instructions does the trick. It is easy to avoid the grip from peeling on the edges IF you follow the instructions and inset the grip a quarter inch; I can tell from the video that that rule was not followed which explains why the grip was peeling. I have not found that rubber grip tape is dangerously slippery when wet, but yes, like sandpaper grip, it does get slippery when wet. (I live in a drier climate but still see plenty of rain and snow and do have to deal with things like walking through wet grass and stepping in puddles like most skaters.) And yes rubber grip does get dusty but that was also a problem with sandpaper; perhaps it get more dusty but it is also easier to clean (just use a damp rag, you can't do that with sandpaper). Finally, rubber griptape, in my experience, is not twice as expensive as sandpaper. It retails from the manufacturer, a company called DKL (by all means don't buy from "Voldemort"), for $12 a sheet and sometimes they have sales which brings in down to $9 or $10. Maybe I'm out of touch, but isn't sandpaper usually about $10 a sheet? That's my 2 cents.
I've tried it myself and I applied it correctly and have no problems with it peeling off, but I just feel like the performance is nowhere near as good as traditional sandpaper grip. I feel like the traction on the grip is inconsistent and grabs my shoes sometimes whereas it would slide smoother with sandpaper. I haven't seen anyone bring that point up when talking about rubber grip but I just don't think the performance is good enough to justify using it
I've used some before. First time it was fine. Never came up. The second time was years later it wouldn't stay on my board for shit. I could yank the whole thing off with one hand.
I live in the American Southwest. I contemplated rubber grip tape, but with dust being everywhere, I just couldn't see myself wiping it down after every few tricks to keep it "sticky." The trade off for not wearing shoes down but having to wipe the "grip" down multiple times a session just wasn't worth it to me I guess. And if I was really a game changer, more people would've hopped on board (pun intended). I've heard more people try it and switch back than people who keep at it. I guess if you have the perfect garage conditions where you mop the floor before each session, and that's your main practice area, then I guess rubber griptape would be fine
I've been skating DKL the past 4 years now non stop. So many of the things you are saying in this video are just straight up incorrect. ▪︎ You can easily get rid of the air bubbles by just poking them with a razor knife like you would with a regular griptape. ▪︎ Grip doesnt lift up if you just sand down the edges a little bit. I can tell by just looking at your board that you're not applying it like it should be. ▪︎ Your point about about it being double the price compared to regular grip doesnt really make sense. Skate shoes usually lasted me 3-4 weeks on regular grip. I've been skating the same pair of Forum Mids for over a year now with DKL. In my experience all my flip tricks have also been incredibly more consistent with DKL since the shoes dont really wear down. Just my 2 cents.
As I said in the video tho in the UK it’s almost unusable because as soon as it gets wet or dusty it’s lethal. Which is more than enough to put me off Also the air bubbles in this video had been poked into, I thought that would be obvious but I guess I shoulda said anyway. Perhaps it’s just the type I had but I hated it personally and tried it for nearly a a month of skating everyday
I use it for my trampoline board. It doesn't reduce wear on the trampoline, but guests can use it with their street shoes during get togethers. Pretty niche use-case, but I'm happy with it! I tried it with a fingerboard too, it was dogshit.
I've always wanted to try this but I never did because everyone said it was awful. seems they are correct. I use rubber grip on my fingerboards because it's grippier than the foam grip most people use.
I rode rubber grip for about 3 ish maybe 4 months it wasn’t the worst but it’s just a gimmick and it sucks when it gets wet or dirty but it does work alright
I haven’t skated for around 6 years and I haven’t watched any skate videos since then, I used to watch braille a lot, what’s the hate all about ? How can anyone hate Aaron
Why don't skate shoes have more wear protection in the front side areas so the grip tape doesn't eat them as fast? I wouldn't skate in my trail running shoes, but those have a thin "sole" reaching up to protect against sharp rock. It's not street fashion, but they look ok and they're comfy.
That braille rubber grip looks extra wack! Super low quality! I got mine from a smaller brand outta the east coast. It wasn't this bad, you could poke holes to get rid of bubbles without issue. It still wasn't as good as regular grip... But wast this terrible 😅

I had the same experience. I only ran it on two decks before I gave up.

If you cant figure a way to get rid of an air bubble like those your hopeless.

@@Webzskateboards Thanks for replying Webb. Have a good night.
This guy is paid by BIG SKATESHOE corporations don’t listen to him😂
This whole video was just a sly Lakai product placement 😅😅😅😅
even if it isn’t the norm i still wanna make it MY norm, it looks cool and i can save alot of money on shoes.

im gonna give it a go too, but probably only for a cruiser setup
Everybody remembers doing powerslides with socks on 😂😂😂

You kinda just explained why its not as good as traditional griptape

Does nobody poke their air bubbles? It’s an easy fix
Web knows this -he just makes whatever content. Either that or he's haf re--rded cause its so obvious to poke a hole in a bubble.
It works well on normal grip but on rubber it just causes it to be like a flappy piece of skin and honestly looks wotse
I only use it for my son's board. He's 3 so the rubber grip isn't as gnarly for the lil dude who's always on it with his belly and such 😅
4:38 "*I bought this years ago"
Does that mean the price is even more than double now?
I've always wanted to try this but I never did because everyone said it was awful. seems they are correct. I use rubber grip on my fingerboards because it's grippier than the foam grip most people use.
Interesting, did you use the grip from your regular board for that, or was it too thick? Might try this with my new fingerboard that’s coming in
Br*ille is the Voldemort of Skateboarding 🛹 🤣🤣
I’m not consistent enough to have this. I would ruin the grip well before I’d ruin any shoes on regular grip
Better put some shoe goo on your shoes to protect them from the griptape instead of having a sub-par riding experience because of rubber grip.

you didnt grip it correctly... this is a very biased review
and bro doesnt even know what brand it is either
Doesn’t change the fact it skates like ass
I couldn’t do it
Just do the gou miyagi paper griptape !
I’m some one who deals in the rubber grip world and your doing a few things wrong with the aplicastion process
Wu-tang clan W
you need some non slip shoes for that lol

😂 rubber doesn't feel good
ok, cool
Nah it’s not braille grip, it’s DKL. braille just puts their branding on it since they sell it.
It sucks.
