  • The eruption of Santorini in 1615 BC covered the town of Akrotiri with meters of volcanic debris. Today, archaeologists are in the process of excavating it-and marveling at its remarkably preserved ruins.

I like how Bettany Hughes can express her emotions as in "it's a privilege to be here" and "it's heartbreaking." These expressions help to bring the ancient Minoan civilization closer to us. Thank you.

I get it. Most would tell us about the devastation but not humanize it. I was thinking the same thing.

I have learned and enjoyed every documentary or video by Bettany Hughes. I can understand easily the way she explains and makes it all clear. I also like her voice. I look forward to any new Bettany Hughes shows or videos. Thank you Smithsonian!

Akrotiri and The Minoans combined is actually thought to be the inspiration behind the Atlantis myth as Akrotiri was actually part of the Minoan Empire. Which it self was devastated by eruption and the massive tsunami it caused leading to the fall of the Minoan Empire.

The Minoan island of Thira was destroyed by a massive eruption, all that's left is the volcanic caldera. Some seismologists reckon that the eruption would have easily hit 9 on the Richter scale, and probably have caused the "Parting of the 'Red Sea'"

Must have been absolutely terrifying. But in places that are prone to this type of geological activity people become terribly complacent and sometimes to their own demise.
Mother nature eats us for breakfast.
The lady explains history beautifully and makes it easy to imagine how it was.

@@rossboss555 Apparently, she was quite open to the idea, but then she realised that she couldn't possibly spend the rest of her life with a man who wrote "would of" rather than "would have". Sadly, that was the deal breaker for Bettany.

But.. Do you guys ever wonder what happen to villages and towns near Krakatau Volcano when it errupts?
The eruption that can be heard even from Africa. (yes it's KRAKATAU. Not Krakatoa. Pls spell things right)
    That's the real deal.
