I smoke and I run 5 miles five days a week and I also do boxing as long as you work on your cardio you can go. It takes discipline, but you have to make time for your cardio if you’re going to smoke everybody’s different but that’s what works for me.
I tried to smoke once as a kid to see what the big deal was..took one puff & damn near died from coughing like crazy. My mom had me to light her cigarette so that was my chance to try it. Never again did I want to try it or start smoking..I'll pass on that habit!!!

Between that, the truckload of different health problems they cause, the huge increase in prices in them over the years , the commercials you see of deformed sickly people and just the fact like you said, you cough your insides out when you try them, it amazes me that in 2025 that cigarettes are even still a thing, but they very much are. I live and work in a smallish town, lot of country living here. Cigarettes here cost around $10 per pack for name brand. It’s shocking to see how many people here smoke cigarettes or vape. Especially women, I would say 60-70% of the women here smoke. But I’ll go to someone’s single wide trailer that looks like it’s been there for 50+ years, window will be busted out and be tarped off or plywood to cover them. No running car, They look like they don’t two nickels to rub together. Be like mom, dad and two kid like 18 and 16 all living there and every last one of them smoke. Blows my mind, they’d rather support their habit than have windows in their house or a working car. Shows you how addicting those things are

I give you Rick Middleton, Bruins foward for years who scored many pretty goals ( hence the nifty nickname) and who’s top end speed served him well in his career. A 2+ pack a day smoker for a long, long time. I played against him 25 ish years ago in a Bruins alumni game which was a fundraiser for our youth hockey program. He was a bit pudgy, was smoking in the locker room and put away quite a few beers ( I was tasked with getting beers for the boys) . That sonovabitch could still amaze people with his speed and skill set and he was barely giving 50% effort.

Smoking doesnt exactly mean it will crap out your lungs. I started smoking when i joined the army at 18. I could always max my PT test, my 2 mile run was around 13 minutes or below. Heck we had ability group runs, and our A group was half smokers. And i could still run my butt off and everything else when I was in my mid 30s. I guess it doesn't affect some people the same as others.

My half-siblings' father recently passed of terminal cancer and they always mentioned him being a chain-smoker, so I guess that makes him the rule not the exception. I played high level sports while being a smoker. Once you’re trained up, the smokes don’t affect that much. I had the same lungs and legs anyone else did. It’s once your out of shape that the cigarettes seemed to really take effect.

Maybe the nurses are FOS, I dunno.
