If OH- ion is accumulated at the blue side, then O2 gas is supposed to be produced there.
If H+ ion is accumulated at the yellow side, then H2 gas is supposed to be produced there.
Remember: these ions are not the only onces that are found at the black and red lead; its just that power of preferential discharge had taken effect.

Hello, I understand the reasoning, but then how do I make sense of the indicator colour based on what you said. I have done this with Phenolphthalein as well. And I see the pink appearance and I made sense as H2 must be forming there...just like in the video

Man, this was beautifully explained. Thank you! Now I am set to power and supply oxygen to my underwater seabase indefinitely!

    nice demo!
To speed up the reaction, you need a higher current power supply. Perhaps 12 V.D.C. and 2-5 Amperes

how much energy, how many volts and amps ?

My water conducts with 1000 Ohm with classic carbon stick and medium spacing. If you aren't gonna make big magnification of process with camera on microscope, better is 3000 volt source (with regulation), it gonna make 3 amperes max which is super beautiful. Sadly 3kv converter is not sold in casual hardware store and must be made separately with power tyristor keys. This is actually awesome DIY quest to squeeze a nice flow of hydrogen!! Using just rectifier with ripple filter also works, but you end up with DC based on your AC network average values, which is in range of 150-250V.

I like to do it with 3000 volt for better spark.
