    I really like the smuggle keyword. It makes it a much easier decision on what to turn into a resource early. And you can save those to provide some mid to late game surge when people are down to playing the 2 card they draw a turn

    Very helpful, as usual! 🙌🏻 there is a scenario I saw on Reddit I discussed with my local card event host, that was a bit confusing and no one seems to agree on how to resolve. It goes like this:
    - player 1 plays “Unrefusable Offer” on player 2’s unit that has a “When played/enters play” ability
    - player 1 plays “Spare The Target” on that same unit
    - player 1 has Bossk leader deployed
    There is three different takes on how to resolve it.
    1. “Spare the Target” sends the card back to player 2’s hand AND resolves the bounty immediately as part of that cards ability, so it essentially resolves the bounty before hitting player 2’s hand and letting player 1 play it for no cost under his control. And Bossk’s ability triggers, but has no legal target since the only targetable unit from the bounty is already in play, so any “when played” or “enters play” abilities on that card only triggers once, not twice.
    2. The same, except Bossk triggers and lets you play that unit again, giving player 1 the when played/enters play trigger twice.
    3. The bounty triggers before hitting the hand, but since the card is already in player 2’s hand from resolving “spare the target”, the bounty won’t resolve or won’t have a legal target since player 2’s hand is hidden information from abilities player 1 controls. Bossk triggers, but no legal target.
    Any advice? 😂

    • @MaindeckGames
      @MaindeckGames  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's #3! Spare is resolved in printed order, so the card returns to the hidden zone, then you can attempt to claim its bounty. As its bounty would look at a zone hidden to you, you cannot confirm that the card exists, so nothing happens. Bossk then attempts to resolve it again, but he's equally stumped as to where the unit went, so just like in the OT, he doesn't do anything. ;)

    Your videos are great and very well explained. I'm still dubious on “Make an Opening” indirectly defeating “Tie Phantom”. I understand HP is reduced to 0, but I would still thank an attack would have been required to knock it out. To me, the -2/-2 modified the unit's attributes on how it could attack or what it takes to defeat it in an attack. The "game rules" kicking in automatically without attack doesn't feel very thematic and will be hard to sell with my game partners.

    • @MaindeckGames
      @MaindeckGames  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Thank you! I can provide you a little more firepower for the ruling here as well:
      1.11.4. A card’s HP cannot be modified below 0. If a card’s HP would be modified below 0, treat the card’s HP as 0 instead. A card is defeated immediately if its HP is modified to 0.
      I can understand it feeling like the unit needs to be attacked for theme, but HP doesn't need to go negative to defeat the unit! If a unit's HP ever reaches 0, it is immediately defeated.

    Unrefusable Offer + Spare the Target. Spare the Target says: “Return an enemy non-leader unit to its owner’s hand. Collect that unit’s Bounties.” Once the unit is returned to my opponent’s hand, can I still “collect” the Unrefusable Offer bounty and have that unit played under my control from my opponent’s hand?

    • @MaindeckGames
      @MaindeckGames  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Unfortunately, no. While the Last Known Information does maintain the Unrefusable Offer bounty on the card, once a card is placed in a Hidden Zone (the opponent's hand), you no longer are able to "know" the card is there to be able to play it, and the opponent is not able to reveal to you that the card *is* there. While this seems very silly and that the card is *obviously* there right now, this is very much future-proofing rules for when it could be combined with other potential effects in the future that would make it much more confusing.

    Would Spare the Target collect the bounty given by the unit through an upgrade, let's say a Quarry for instance? My guess is that Spare can only collect bounties that are printed on the creature it is bouncing, because upgrades are immediately defeated when a unit leaves play, so there would be no bounty for you to collect with Spare the Target.
    Edit: although now that I'm thinking, there should be no reason why a bounty (even if it's printed on the unit) would be collected from the hand. So the way it probably works is Spare checks for any bounties on the creatures, regardless if they're printed or given through upgrades, and the effect is resolved in one fell swoop, so by the time the upgrade is defeated from the unit leaving play, it already "registered" that it had any bounties there to be collected. Still feels a bit "esoteric" to me though, feels like at least they should have put additional rulings about this on the official database entry for Spare the Target.

    Krayt Dragon hurt my head a bit when I read about it in another video's comments. If my opponent plays an event that would knock out my base do I lose, or does Krayt get the chance to knock out their base first? Do both resolve leading to a tie?

    • @MaindeckGames
      @MaindeckGames  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      The key is to separate Trigger and Resolution! Krayt Dragon TRIGGERS on the event being played, but cannot resolve until the event has completed its abilities:
      7.6.8. If an ability triggers during or as the result of a non-attack action, resolve that ability at the next available opportunity after that action is fully completed. If an ability triggers during an attack, resolve that ability at the appropriate timing point within that attack. Resolving a triggered ability never interrupts an action or ability that is currently resolving (other than the specified timing points during an attack). See 6.3. Attack With a Unit
      So Krayt cannot deal damage until after the event has fully resolved. And if the event resolving deals "lethal" damage to the opponent's base, the opponent *immediately* loses.
      1.9.7. If a base has damage on it equal to or greater than its HP value, its owner immediately loses the game, and their opponent wins the game.
      The Krayt Dragon's trigger thus never actually resolves - the game ends before the trigger has an opportunity to resolve. The rules would have to dictate that you "resolve all pending abilities before checking the game state" or something to allow Krayt Dragon to resolve as well, but that is not the case!

    I still don’t understand when the damage happens with krayt and change of heart. If the event has to fully resolve it can’t happen till after it changes sides in the regroup phase
    or is it right after it changes sides from change of heart?

    • @MaindeckGames
      @MaindeckGames  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's an interesting way of thinking about it! Hopefully I can help clear it up.
      Change of Heart creates what's called a Delayed Effect - part of the ability's resolution is to set up a future effect on the game. This way, the ability is not constantly "resolving"; rather, as a part of its resolution, the ability sets up a thing that will happen sometime in the future.
      I'll explain more, but there is a section on delayed effects in the comp rules if you want a read - they are not super exciting, but it could help. The section is 7.7.4, and the comp rules are here: starwarsunlimited.com/how-to-play?chapter=rules
      So, Change of Heart's resolution is to change the controller of the unit, and then create a delayed effect that returns control to whoever that card's Owner is at Regroup phase. So resolving the card involves the initial change of control, and then simply "creating" that invisible little ability that will happen later on. Once you've done both of those, the card is fully resolved, and any pending triggers will immediately resolve. The delayed ability will happen later on in the turn no matter what else happens, as long as that unit is still in play.
      So just to be 100% clear, here's the resolution:
      Player A's action:
      Player A plays Change of Heart on Player B's Krayt Dragon.
      Krayt Dragon triggers (does not resolve as the Play action needs to finish)
      Krayt Dragon moves from Player B to Player A. A Delayed Ability is set up to return Krayt Dragon to its Owner at the start of the regroup phase.
      Change of Heart has now finished resolving, and Krayt Dragon's trigger can now resolve. Player B deals 6 damage to Player A's base or a unit they control (which could be Krayt Dragon).
      All triggers are finished, so it's now Player B's action.
      Hope that makes more sense!

    I had 4 rules scenarios arise at the Shadows of the Galaxy PreRelease. I was able to find answers to 2 of them but the remaining 2 scenarios are still unanswered. I will share them below for the edification of others as well as a hope to get answers for the unanswered scenarios.
    1. Can you still Smuggle a card from your Resource Row if your library is empty since you cannot replace the smuggled resource with the top card of your library? Answer: Yes. You simply do not replace the smuggled resource and go down one resource in your row.
    2. If you defeat an enemy unit with a Bounty that says "Draw a card", is that a mandatory draw or optional? Answer: Collecting a bounty is always optional despite the text not saying "You may draw a card".
    3. First Light has a Smuggle cost of [7] [Vigilance] [Villainy], [deal 4 damage to a friendly unit]. Can it damage itself or is that part of the cost and happens before it is smuggled into play?
    4. My base had 27 damage on it. My opponent's base had 26 damage on it. Both of our libraries were empty. Regroup Phase begins. We are each supposed to draw 2 cards and take 3 damage for each card that we cannot draw. Are the draws simultaneous resulting in a Tie with me going to 33 damage on base and my opponent going to 32 damage on base? Are the cards drawn one at a time so that I go to 30 damage on base and opponent goes to 29 damage on base resulting in a Loss for me? Does the player with Initiative choose the order of the nested actions and thereby select the winner?

    • @MaindeckGames
      @MaindeckGames  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Let's do this!
      1. Yep, you got it. This is a "do as much as you can" ruling.
      2. Correct, bounty collection is optional. I had to look that one up myself at the prerelease!
      3. It cannot damage itself. A unit is not in play until its costs have been played. Comp Rules 6.2.1-6.2.5 go through the steps of playing a card, and all costs must be paid at 6.2.4 before the card enters play at 6.2.5.
      6.2.4. Pay cost(s). Exhaust resources equal to the card’s modified cost. If there are any additional costs required for the card, also pay those now.
      Until it is in play, it's not a valid choice for the cost of dealing damage to a unit you control.
      4. I'll give you a few rules snippets that put this together, but I want to first throw in just for clarity that Nested Actions have nothing to do with this! "Draw a card" or "Draw 2 cards" is not an action, it's a game effect (in this case) or, in another case, might be an ability if on a card. Abilities only nest when they are triggered during the resolution of other triggered abilities, or during a sequence of multiple actions. In this case, the game is just instructing both players to draw 2 as a game rule. Now, let's look at the individual rules that clear this up:
      1.13.2. When a player is instructed to draw multiple cards, those cards are considered to be drawn simultaneously, unless the draw effect specifies the cards are drawn “one at a time.”
      5.5.1.B. (Regroup Phase) - Draw cards. Each player draws 2 cards.
      8.7.1. If a player runs out of cards in their deck, they continue playing with the cards they have in play and in hand. If a player would draw a card from their empty deck, they instead deal 3 damage to their base for each card they would draw.
      For example, if a player with an empty deck would draw 2 cards during the regroup phase, they instead deal 6 damage to their base.
      1.9.8. If an ability deals damage to multiple units, all damage is dealt simultaneously. If an ability deals multiple instances of damage to one unit, each instance of damage is dealt sequentially. Resolve any triggered abilities after all damage is dealt.
      5.6.3. In a case where both players’ bases reach 0 remaining HP at the same time, the game ends in a draw.
      The end result is this:
      Both players draw 2 cards simultaneously. That instance of 2 cards is simultaneous, not sequential, so for both players it is replaced by "6 damage". The damage is dealt simultaneously, to both players, resulting in both players reaching 0 remaining HP at the same time. The game ends in a draw.
      Hope that all helps!

      @@MaindeckGames Thanks for elaborating on the scenarios and providing definitive answers to the unresolved ones!

  • @DiegoDeschain
    @DiegoDeschain 4 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Can you just elaborate a little more on the Timely+Hondo interaction? If I was asked about it by someone, my answer would be that you would smuggle the card, and as soon as the card enters you would have to resolve ambush, and then, only after all of that, and any other potential stuff happened from the attack, only then, you'd be free to resolve the nested Hondo trigger that was waiting for a chance to resolve. Basically I thought the "window to resolve pending stuff" would only show up after you resolved any newer triggers (like in this case, the ambush one).

    • @MaindeckGames
      @MaindeckGames  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      Sure thing! So the big misunderstanding here is that nothing nests during this interaction. Nesting occurs when triggered abilities trigger during other *triggered* abilities, or during sequential actions from a single effect (i.e. U-Wing Reinforcement). The reason Nesting exists is because it clears up what would happen when you are in the middle of resolving a pool of "pending" abilities and you add a new one to it. In the case of Hondo + Timely, when Hondo or Ambush trigger, we haven't even gotten to the first opportunity to resolve a pending ability yet. So what you are looking at is one single action: even if it has a couple of steps to it, at no point do we hit a resolution window until the the Unit is played from Timely (as that is when we have finally completed resolution of the current ability). Timely is played with Smuggle, which, as its ability, plays Ezra. During that action, two triggers occur - Hondo, and Ambush. Once we reach the first potential resolution point, both triggers are available to choose from.
      Here's a key point to consider - the rules for simultaneous resolution don't actually care about *when* the abilities triggered. It's actually looking exclusively at the resolution timepoint. Read it again carefully:
      7.6.9. If a player must resolve multiple triggered abilities on cards they control at the same time, that player chooses the order in which to resolve those abilities.
      The 7.6.9 rule comes into play only when we reach the *resolution* stage and we have multiple pending triggers. So we can pick up multiple triggers along the way while performing a single game action - once we reach the first resolution point (either one of the combat steps, or after our current ability finishes resolving), any triggers we "picked up" will be considered simultaneous. Then, as we resolve those triggers, if any one of them causes a new trigger, THAT is where Nesting occurs and we resolve the most recent as we keep the previous simultaneous unresolved abilities pending.
      I hope that makes sense - at this stage of depth, I know it feels like a legal textbook. You have no idea how much I said and cut down during the video to try to make it digestible and I'm not confident I kept or cut the right parts. If it's still not making sense, I am willing to chat about it as long as it takes so hit me with any more questions!

    My question:
    Do I have to announce hoe many cards I want to discard in totalt to his ability, or can I discard 1 to use his 'deal 2 damage' then trigger thr Bounty to Draw another card, and discard thst, to chose the Poe-mode 'discard 1'
    Not sure if the Bounty is a nested ability and therefore will be resolved mid-Poe or if it will wait in line for Poe to have his entire On Attack-ability resolved.
    Tyvm :)

    • @MaindeckGames
      @MaindeckGames  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      No problem! Yes, abilities are resolved in the order they are written (comp rules 7.1.5), so the first thing you do to resolve the ability is to discard any number of cards. Then, you choose up to that many different options from Poe (in any order, per 7.1.5) and perform those.
      As Triggered Abilities (like Bounty) can't interrupt the resolution of another ability, you have to fully resolve Poe before you draw any cards. Abilities will only nest if they are triggered during the resolution of *other* Triggered Abilities, or during the resolution of multiple actions from a single effect. Otherwise, those abilities would have simultaneous timing.
      For example, let's say you discarded 2 cards to Poe, and chose to deal 2 damage to defeat a unit with an On Defeat trigger, and then defeated an Upgrade which, by leaving, caused the attached unit with another On Defeat trigger to reduce to 0 HP and be defeated. The first trigger cannot resolve until Poe has finished, and the second trigger also cannot resolve until Poe has finished. As Poe is neither a triggered ability nor multiple actions, there are no nesting properties at play - it's a single ability resolution, and when it has finished, we reach the first possible resolution window for both triggers. They are considered simultaneously resolving, and as such, their controller could then choose the order they resolve in.
      This is easily the trickiest part of the rules, so let me know if you have more questions or need more examples!

      @@MaindeckGamesfor clarification, in this scenario you talk about. Even though it’s your turn, your opponent chooses the order of which when defeated trigger goes off? Is Val just a special case then?

      @@spanishfalcon Nothing in what was said implied the opponent got to choose the resolution order. It is your turn, so you choose the resolution order. The discards all happen before any of the effects, though.

      @spanishfalcon and @chocolatchip7501 - The player who controls the simultaneous triggers always dictates the resolution order.
      7.6.9. If a player must resolve multiple triggered abilities on cards they control at the same time, that player chooses the order in which to resolve those abilities.
      7.6.10. If both players must resolve triggered abilities on cards they control at the same time, the active player chooses one player at a time to resolve abilities. When chosen, that player resolves all abilities triggered on cards they control in the order of their choice, and once they finish, the other player does the same on cards they control.
      The active player chooses only which player starts, but if you control the abilities, you control the order they resolve in.
