Saw them in New Orleans in 89. They didn't play An American Dream but it was still a great concert. I especially liked Motorcycle and Haunted/When the minutes drag. 20 years later here at Lollapalooz and they still sound fantastic.
amazing live performers, and anyone who saw this live remembers it with great fondness (I myself saw them in the late 80's, and the only thing they might be blamed for here is not being 20 years younger). also, it was very hot outside. hilarious that people critique this particular show here on youtube. you either don't get out much to live music, or suffer from one or another perceptual defect (I'm happy to help you out!).
I've been to around 100 live rock concerts of major indies or bigger. I've seen these musicians live twice, once as LNR (1997) and once as Bauhaus (2006). They were tight as shit, I shit you not. The performance on this video is shit. I've heard them do this song 10 times better at a club date with ~75 people in the crowd. They're off-key and out of time. Maybe it's deliberate, but if so, it's a "fuck you" to the crowd. They might have been drunk and/or tripping.
Okay, I'll Daniel props for soldiering on even though he has at least 2 broken strings on the guitar. That said, this was a horrible rendition of a great song. He should've just stopped and switched to a working 6 string and restarted the song.

Dear god, that guitar is thrashed, the mix is shit, the drums sound like wet cardboard, the only thing going right here is the infinite talent on display by the artists. Technically this performance is a train wreck, rock and roll baby.
At first listen, I hear this as a pretty poor performance. But, after further reflection, in a way it begins makes sense. Perhaps I'm overthinking it, but playing this song in and out of tune guitar with a few broken strings can be interpreted as metaphor for the broken out of balance American dream. I have always love the studio version, but in a way this performance is art in its honesty. Or maybe he was just drunk, who knows..
