    From the first time I watched "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey", I always thought of it as your love letter to metal.

    I think that Sam got a really good point there: people who get into metal just because of its rebellion or extremity factors, usually grow out of this style of music quite soon. But the people who like the musicianship and the power, the epicness of metal stay hooked for a long time.
    But yeah considering the future of the channel: It would be more than awesome if Sam traveled to Northern Europe to discover more about the metal there, like Swedish (melodic) death metal, Finnish metal, etc.

    I was the one who asked about the goal of "Satan Lives." I've been keeping up with Sam Dunn's work since I saw "Metal: A Headbanger's Journey" in 2007 as a little middle school girl. I could go on and on about how much I admire Sam Dunn and how his films have influenced me, but I just want to thank you guys for posting and answering my question. The film was not easy to understand at first for me since I thought it would be related to music, like the rest of Dunn's work. Cheers from the Chicago area!

    I am 14 year old Sam, by which I mean I am a 14 year old die hard metal head living in Canada. I personally believe that the rebellious aspect of metal still exists, but in different form, and in a form that requires you to love the music, and not just be in it for the rebellion. Nowadays, metal is still rebellion against mainstream culture, but not so much against mainstream restraints

    I'm one of those that believes that metal is anti-religion territory but I'm up for a good debate, bring it on. Also, what happened to the Voivod documentary, you guys really dropped the ball on this one, you MUST honor Piggy.

    I am proud to be the first Nebraskan to tune in to a live viewing (yep, that was me). Sam, I'm a big fan of your work and love the show. I'm a newer subscriber but remember your work from Metal Evolution, etc. and it always takes me back to being a teenager jamming out on my bed, dreaming of being Bruce Dickinson, etc. What I love is how you keep things positive and upbeat. I'm about your age and the Metal community has had a bad habit of eating itself alive over the years (this band sucks, this genre sucks, etc.) instead of embracing all of it. We should be all fighting to keep heavy music alive (not that it's going anywhere)!

    I didn’t know where else to write to you Sam, but found here. You give justice to the musicians as to their music and their mystic. Thank you brother for ALL the rock docs. I’m not only a fan of music but I’m a fan of the individuals and their stories. You creativeness statices my cravings. Today I finally got to watch the ZZ Top documentary. I’m a huge fan of the band and I was blown away!!! Thank you Sam, keep them coming.👍🏻

    Thank you so much for answering my question! I really love all you guys and gals do at Banger! You've opened my eyes and ears to new kinds of metal music that I would never have listened to before! I do have another question though: Some people I know have trouble discerning the difference between post-hardcore and metalcore, and I'm wondering if it might then be a good idea to add post-hardcore to the tree at some point? Some post-hardcore bands seem to have influenced many modern metal bands as well as having shifted the genre itself toward a more metallic sound. Bands like At The Drive In, Dance Gavin Dance (recently), Refused, A Day to Remember, The Fall of Troy, and Alesana all appear to be important bands that have made important contributions in some way or shape in terms of influence on modern metalcore/hardcore. Would like to see a post-hardcore episode if you all think it needs to be given the time.

    Thank God for this chanel and you representing and keeping metal alive.
    There have been alot of documentaries done on Zeppelin, Sabbath and BTM on quite a few bands like Metallica,Megadeth,Anthrax. There have not been any proper documentaries done on Slayer or Iron Maiden.
    How do you feel about the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? I think that Motorhead, Iron Maiden,Judas Priest and the other three big 4 need to be inducted before any more hip hop.

    • @putridsunrise192
      @putridsunrise192 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Maiden and Priest are the godfathers of power metal. What are you on about?

    • @putridsunrise192
      @putridsunrise192 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Every metal band is a heavy metal band you dingus....Thats the most vague thing you could have possibly said, which shows you clearly don't know what your'e talking about. Helloween and Blind Guardian take massive influence from Maiden and Priest. You would have to be deaf or not know metal at all to not see the huge connection. And using Metallica and Misfits as a counter argument is just dumb. Those are vastly different bands. Misfits and Discharge aren't even metal! They're punk/hardcore. The point of my original comment still stands. I've never met someone who has said "Slayer is my favorite metal band, but I don't like thrash metal" still haven't met that guy yet.

    • @putridsunrise192

    Since I missed it, I'm going to leave my question here and pray to Odin it gets answered: why do you limit your streams to one hour? It's not like you're on TV and you're going to interrupt other shows, so what's the reason? Happy new year by the way 😄

    • @BangerTV
      @BangerTV  7 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      You're not the first to ask! We find for most shows, at around 45 minutes, the key points of the topic have been exhausted and the chat becomes a list of shouts. Also, our analytics on actual viewer retention don't support making an hour--plus show. We encourage everyone who wants to continue the conversation in these comments after. And when necessary we will do a show part 2. Cheers!

    • @volimNestea
      @volimNestea 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      BANGER Thanks for the swift reply, you're awesome! I understand what you're talking about, makes sense to me now. But it got me thinking, have you considered just having a regular old stream, without a particular topic, just you and the chat room? It would be nice to see your faces more than once a week 😊

    I love that you guys did the sexism in metal episode, although I also understand (to a degree) the criticism it got. I would really love to see more of these episodes in which metal is discussed within a greater context of 'stuff that human beings do' and even beyond that. Some examples:
    1-Politics & societal concerns in metal (I suspect it will be more polarizing than the sexism discussion);
    2-Environmentalism in metal (not the most common theme for bands to address but it has been there since the beginning with Black Sabbath and has continued through Testament, Gojira, and recently I heard about the rise of eco-black metal with bands like Wolves in the Throne Room);
    3-Religious, philosophical & spiritual traditions in metal (obv christianity is huge, but there are many different approaches (Amenra for example) - and there are also bands that find inspiration from different traditions altogether (Yob for example using Alan Watts voiceovers in their music).
    Ultimately a lot of these things I think are at the root of where metal comes from - or in other words, explain the metal phenomenon from a sociological point of view. Personally, this has been something I have always struggled with to understand (what is metal and what is its significance in relation to the rest of the world) and I was only able to find a satisfying 'answer' when I let go of (almost) everything metal in my life and came to realize more about the world and what matters in life (I came back later though, when I had the perspective to put metal in a more appropriate place).
    Thanks, love the show, keep up the awesome work!

    Your Christian metal expert might be Pastor Bob Beeman. He is not in a band, but was one of the earliest promoters of it and is found in the special thanks of MANY Christian albums from bands like Believer, Mortification, Sacrament, etc.

    • @mvunit3
      @mvunit3 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought the same, but I KNOW people will just make fun of his friendly demeanor and his "hair" unfortunately. But man, he has seen it all. I was also thinking, maybe get a member of Believer (aren't they from Canada?) or Extol.
      Again, Christian Metal covers just about all sub-genres as well :).

    • @steven8000
      @steven8000 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ***** I'm pretty sure that Believer is from the US. Regardless, I agree that it would be kind of hard to cover all of Christian metal since it does cover all subgenres. However, I would focus mainly on that definitive period of late 80's/early 90's Christian thrash and death metal.

    • @mvunit3
      @mvunit3 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes (everything is on "Wiki" :P ) you are right, they are from Pennsylvania.
      I also look at it (as I'm sure the bands) that its too bad this . . . denomination, has to be separated from the rest of Metal. Otherwise bands like; Trouble, Kings X, Theocracy, Believer, 7 Days, Tourniquet, Extol, Living Sacrifice, Demon Hunter, Harmony and many others would fit right in with each sub-genre they belong to (Trouble, Believer and Kings X as the strongest exceptions being accepted into the fold for the most part).
      And many don't consider themselves "Christian Metal" - but believe in its principles and/or as their personal faith.
      BTW - Bob Beeman is surrounded by other pastors that have been in the Metal scene so maybe one of them will step forward as well. Or reach label reps from "R.E.X.", "Tooth & Nail Records", "Solid State" etc. who may know the history.

    how about a guilty pleasures episode? i consider myself a "metalhead" at heart. my favorite bands are exodus, death angel, maiden, testament, hatchet, and so on. but i must say that i listen to queens of the stone age, janes addiction etc, just as much as those other bands. i might even put queens of the stone age as my favorite band. would love to know your favorite guilty pleasure bands or artists and other musicians guilty pleasures. also, loving the show!!! learning alot of things that i wasent privy to. you are my favorite documentarian. horns up forever

    • @2000Doriyas
      @2000Doriyas 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      No one should have guilty pleasures! Like what you like, just explain what it is you like about it, you don't have to like everything with the same amount of respect and admiration, and if someone judges you because you happen to occasionally listen to some artist they don't, fuck them. Unless your favorite artist is J Cole or Lady Antebellum then I will judge the f u c k out of you..

    Fav album cover - Sepultura's Arise. I stared at that cover for HOURS... mainly because, back in 'the day', I had it on tape and it was hard to make out all the little details, like the little guy on the plateau.

    • @donnyswanson
      @donnyswanson 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ha... and I wrote that comment before I got to the end of this show. ARISE... best Sepultura album in my opinion. Production wise it was miles above the other albums. Song writing is amazing. Album art is great and musically they really hit their stride. I may be a bit biased as well since this was the first album of theirs I had heard. I was 14 when it came out and that was around when I started listening to MY music (not my parents or radio top 10 music). So, being at that impressionable age, this one left a HUGE impression on me. Me and a friend of mine would drop whatever we were doing and head bang when we heard the open E riff in Desperate Cry.... and then continue on doing whatever we were doing, once it was over, as though nothing had happened.

  • @CrabJuice83
    @CrabJuice83 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    Sam, you are 100% correct - Beneath the Remains is obviously the best Sepultura album. 2nd and 3rd are also obvious with Arise and Schizophrenia going there. In fact, going past 1991 with Sepultura is a waste of ones time. (unless you're into that whole 'groove' thing, then by all means)

    • @putridsunrise192

      That's ridiculous, Roots is a great and highly influential album. After that when Max left and eventually Igor is when they became a waste of time. I only listen to the first what 5 albums with the Cavalera brothers.

    How about the old Voivod doc? I believe Flight 666 put a stop to that but would love to see, even in unedited format, all that footage. I am originally from the same part of Quebec they are from and it would mean a lot. I believe the footage of Dave Grohl discussing Voivod for more than 20 mins that's found on youtube may be an outage from that, no?

    Can I ask a question here? I wanna know why you guys don't ever review power metal albums. Seems like every review is death, thrash, or prog.

    • @mvunit3
      @mvunit3 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Prog? You think so, I don't think it gets talked about enough (and its more technical bands), but I know Sam is very picky :p. I'm particular about Powermetal too, but I'd rather listen to Powermetal than a couple of sub-genres ;).

      Troncoso - Backbone of every state, country, province etc. And go figure, some get educated, or learn a profession, skill and move up in the world . . . and some become MUSICIANS :O (imagine that? ;).

    Future possibilities for Lock Horns - you could debate/discuss a single band and their best or most essential albums. Really I'd be more interested in this not for seeing which album or albums "win," but as a way of learning more about a band's career and others' interpretations of it. You could also discuss two newly released albums that are somewhat similar and debate which is better. Again, less about which "wins" but another way to talk about new music without necessarily doing an individual in-depth review.

      Posted this comment during the middle of the episode, then saw the next show is on Sepultura's albums. Glad you've already started exploring that idea and hope you do so on future shows.

    Hey Sam! I think it would be super cool if you ever got to the point where the show could travel, it could be really interesting and educational and also rad if you came to some cities and did live shows in front of some studio audiences! Denver could be a cool place since its kind of central, maybe a lot of people could travel to see you speak or do a show!

    • @Kataxu
      @Kataxu 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      EDIT: Maybe I should actually listen to the whole episode. Holy shit, I NEVER expected that to come up!!
      I would love to be your guest for the Christian Metal episode. There will be some issues about how to deal with the fact that Christian Metal itself is not a subgenre as far as sonic differences are concerned, but a thematic modifier to already-existing subgenres of metal. They don't combine the sounds of Gospel with bombastic riffage, after all!
      Or maybe some band should go ahead and do that.
      If you don't want me, definitely try to get Jayson Sherlock or something.

    "The stereotype is that metal is anti-Christian" - the interesting thing I realized recently actually is just how many of the prominent metal figures are low-key Christians at this point. The fact that metal seems to put 'darkness' and kind of a 'heaven vs. hell' question right on the line... perhaps this actually has pushed many metalheads to consider the question. I feel like this was the way Mustaine, and Alice Cooper described their own conversion happening. And then you have Ozzy some years back saying he goes to church, or the fact that Rob Halford says he prays before every show. And Tom Araya, Dan Spitz, Peter Steele, Dee Snyder, Nicko McBrain, etc. etc.

    I think that it is time that Lock horns and Banger became more sophisticated, meaning, not that it is not a great smart and cool channel, but it can discuss issues pertaining to a more academic and thoughtful debate e.g. metal and globalization, the place of metal and metal appreciation within mainstream understandings of culture and cultural belonging etc. Could be great especially if these subjects are discussed within the accessible framework of Banger and lock horns.

    As a HUGE Smashing Pumpkins fan, and one who has heard thousands of stories about how much of an asshole Billy Corgan apparently is, it's so refreshing to hear some praise going his way. One thing is for sure about him, dude loves discussing the music and bands that he grew up loving.
    Also, I have yet to see that Rush film, despite it being on my list for awhile. Now I have another reason (since I didn't know Corgan was part of it).

    An idea for a lock horns episode that is not a genre debate: the best/coolest/favorite/most artistic album artwork. For me personally, I like a certain album better if it has appealing artwork. Even before you listen to the music, you will already have formed an opinion about it based on the cover.

    I'm going to ask this question now. Sam, why do you keep speaking of Opeth's music pre-Ghost Reveries simply as "Death Metal"? They always had elements of progressive rock in their music. I know they were heavier in their first couple of albums, but those song structures were not pure death metal. They are practically the band that founded the idea of Progressive Death Metal ever since Orchid. So why is it that when you speak of Opeth, you talk as though they were death metal before and went prog later?
