Hey guys there's a much easier way of creating a perfect animated line without using the pen tool. Go to file, new, Color Matte, chose the color you want. drop it on your timeline, next go to Uniform Scale and un check it. Next scale height and width as desired by clicking the toggle ( the little circle stop watch) and animate your box or line as you wish. You'll be able to do this under one minute. Cheers.
HELP... I desperately need help doing this with a png instead of text. The mask follows the png, rather than creating a fixed field that it disappears in and out of when you move it. When I move the mask, the png disappears. When I move the png, the mask moves with it.
You can't alter the Y position of the text itself under "Motion" -- that's the same mistake I made. If you do it via motion it will move the mask as well, you have to apply a "Transform" effect to the text object, which you can then change the position of without moving the mask.
How can I do this with a legacy title, where the text can't be moved separately from the mask? My issue is when I keyframe movement, the mask moves too.
Finally solved the mask problem! If the mask is following the text when you're moving it, you are changing 'Position' under Motion which you shouldn't, instead, search for 'Transform' in effects, apply it to the text layer and change the position from 'Transform' and not 'Motion'. Hope this helped!
was struggling with this, thanks. One thing to remember, once you add the transform effect, move it above the mask in the editing panel or it won't work.

Hi again Nathaniel ! - I put a good hour into doing a few samples, and referred to this video of yours a few times... finally got it in my head and I'm getting faster. One thing which is disappointing.... you *cannot* use a *graphic* like .psd or .jpg .png from Photoshop because there is no masking option available. So - I thought - maybe I can create a graphic in the new graphics panel option, which I did, and chose "file" import and tried a .psd logo .... and thought - ok this is going to fool PPCC into thinking it is text... got all excited and nope..... it doesn't work - still no masking option which is too bad.

Mary, make sure you activate your "Pen tool" and click at any place on your "Program Monitor", then you'll notice the Graphic essential tool panel shows up, with parameters to regulate. In using the "Pen tool" make sure at the "Appearance" section, you chose "Stroke" in color white to make the line and not "Fill" in color red.
To use this reveal effect on a png, mask your png and just drop the transform effect (distort) on your layer and keyframe the position from transform effect controls.

Old comment, but to anyone running into this problem: Make sure you are changing the value that's under Transform under "Text". DON'T use the value that's under Transform at the top.
Those who can't use the pen tool all you have to do instead is to go to Title > New Title > Default Still and you can use the pen tool there. Then exit the window when done and your edited line/text will appear in Project Panel. Drag to the Working Area. If you want to edit your text later but you already have closed that window just double click on the file in Project Panel. Btw great tutorial! Thank you very much ^u^

How is this done when using a placed png file? I couldn't get it to work the mask was linked to the path of the keyframes and it was driving me crazy!! So I basically want the same effect but with an image reveal over my footage. Thanks, your video is spot on btw!

That´s actually super smart...on TH-cam, you get a higher "ranking" if viewers stick to your videos longer...by talking very fast during a tutorial, viewers tend to rewind and play again and again so you´re raising the watch time of your videos - that´s brilliant ;-)
When I do the mask and I try to click on both right side points it won't allow me to click on both points and move with arrows. Every time I hit shift and try to select the second point it deletes the mask... Any thoughts?

Not a dumb question at all. You would select the text and open the Effect Controls panel and you will see your mask listed with the text object in there

His speaking pace is fast, Complaining about him and his pace will not improve yourself in any way. Keep in mind others are not responsible for you. You can rewatch, and pause which should help you get a firmer grasp of what he is saying. He could have less talk overall, but he isn't annoying, or irrelevant, as a non native speaker though he is tough to follow.

Just found out my version of Premiere Pro was outdated. See if you can update, that should fix it

Just set the speed of the clip to 0.25 - Then you should be covered !

MY pen doesnt work the same as you shown, it just pointed on secuence area, dont have that Text tool ... WTF!
