Well, in the 1970s, a lot of people despised them, even said they hated them. Either for being too successive and "shallow" (mainly in England), or for not being clearly progressive leftists (mainly in Sweden).

I saw a video of another youtuber that was trying to compare Agnetha's voice from the new album and a song from mid-seventies, to see if the new has pitch corrections or autotune, and while looking at the wave spectrum in the computer, he detected that she lands the voice in it's perfect note and keeps the wave almost static, even if she goes through highs and lows. Agnetha has that gift.

    • @lounolastname4477
      @lounolastname4477 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

Agnetha sings out of tune a few times on the new album and I am glad they didn’t pitch correct it. Agnetha has never had perfect pitch even in her prime, that is what made her vocal so endearing and heartfelt. Frida did have perfect pitch and sometimes her vocal lost some emotional relatability. It used to be said Agnetha could “cry” with her voice, you can’t do that with perfect pitch, as it still sounds too technically precise. Agnetha’s album A was very heavily outotuned and is my least favourite because of that.

The essence of ABBA, nothing forced just pure talent. No auto tune needed and the new album 40years later the voices are deeper but they still have it. Happy New Year.

Hi Dounia, greetings from Germany. Obviously I'm a little late to the party - but hey, at 57 I'm not as fast as I used to be when I was younger (i.e. when this song was released the first time)😉.
I'm so glad that younger people like yourself are exploring music from that era, especially ABBA. What those four created with the added talent of their producer, Stig Anderson, is simply exceptional. They "wrote" music that will never get old. The melodic structure and the voices of the women complimented each other in ways you have to look very hard for a match to it in present times. Why did I put "wrote" in quotes? Neither Björn (with whom I share the first name) nor Benny could read or write notes. That makes their music even more impressive, don't you think? And when you listen to their last album from 2020 you'll find that they didn't lose one iota of their talent or skills. And bear in mind that Frida and Agnetha are in their seventies now. They still sound like they did back then. That just shows how incredibly gifted they are. Just like Ann Wilson from Heart. If you listen to "Alone" from the eighties and from the gig Heart did a couple of years ago you'll find that time can't do anything to you if you are a gifted and talented singer...
Anyway, I'm looking forward to exploring your channel as a new subscriber...😁💛💛

So nice to see you for first time
I really enjoy with your reaction
It's so true all you said about ABBA and each one as fantastic songwriters and singers
This is an ABBA classic for all December/January dates
A beautiful song with a soft melody at the beginning, a melancholic lyrics with the beautiful and very sweet interpretation of the blonde Agnetha, a brilliant chorus with Frida (especially the power of her second voice in the second and third stanza) and a catchy chorus with the melody that grows and falls in love All ingredients of ABBA
The lyrics are so emotional, contrast with an very catchy chorus
It's no funny, it's melancolich, but have a message of hope
"Happy New Year" is a great song from the 1980 album "Super Trouper" (which includes the homonymous song and "The winner takes it all" among others)
It has a version in Spanish: "Felicidad" which was a hit here in my country
in November 2021, ABBA include a Christmas song tittle "Little things" in their new album "Voyage" (In Their historic come back after almost 40 years), that also was released as a single in the lastest weeks with a special video:
    th-cam.com/video/f0qO04Y9Pwk/w-d-xo.html
ABBA donated your royalties to UNICEF, as They did before in 1979 with "Chiquitita"
You will enjoy with the New songs, the voices of Agnetha and Frida still are beautiful, and married together are amazing again as the unforgettable 'third voice' of ABBA
Best wishes to you with good music
    My best regards from Argentina

You'd expect that it would be Agnetha handling the belting and higher nothes that Frida sings considering that her being a Mezzo-Soprano and Agnetha being a Soprano, some would consider Agnetha better "equipped" vocally to handle that...

Frida took the higher range in parts of songs more often than people realise - Fernando (so nice to hear Agnetha taking lower harmony on that one, she has such a lovely lower tonal quality) parts of I’ve been waiting for you, On and On and On and she did the operatic background vocal in The Day Before You Came.

It is important to understand the context in which this song was written. In time of the Cold War. The United States and the then Soviet Union competed to see who had more and better atomic weapons. There was a sense of fear and discouragement about the future. Remember that in places like Switzerland, people built their own nuclear shelters. That is why the song says that we do not know what will await us at the end of 1989. They are singing it in 1981.

No insult meant but the "song doesn't have an expiry date"?
The lyrics literally say "what lies waiting down the line, in the end of '89" (1989). Yes its a great song. They (we) would never have imagined in 1980/81 that "in the end of '89" the Cold War would be over, Germany would be re-unifying and Eastern European countries would be overthrowing their dictatorships. 1989 seemed so far in the future back then.
A Happy New Year for certain.
One funny thing. In the video when you see the camera looks like it is going around them, the camera is fixed and they are being rotated on a turntable, standing in a bucket type thing, holding hands to not loose balance.
