Bjorn wrote the lyrics for this song when he and Agneta divorced. Took strength and courage for Agneta to even sing this song as it being so personal and performing with Bjorn. Between ABBA and The Carpenters....the two groups have helped me through the loves and pains of my life! Agneta and Karen Carpenter are two my all-time top vocalists!!!!

Thanks for the ABBA. Nobody pulls this stuff off like Agnetha. That Hurt/Sad/Lost little girl stuff is just in her DNA. Love it. Love you too Frida but for different types of songs. My two favorite female singers hands down.

In the 70s UK you had to do just that if you were a guy. Then we realised it wasn't all disco and we got to enjoy the real quality songs.
If it makes me break down it's good.

A lot of Americans are closet ABBA fans. Not so much anymore, but prior to Mamma Mia's (musical/movie) success people simply didn't want to admit they liked ABBA. Sometimes I think it is the reason ABBA never really hit it big here in the states vs the rest of world. It may be due to the fact ABBA's fan base around the world consisted of little kids to full adults including seniors. Watch ABBA: the Movie (1977 tour of Australian cities) and you see the breadth of the fan base's ages at concerts.

I have listened to this song a hundred times...and not until today I noticed how Agnetha sings the line "the winner takes it all" with a strong, almost triumphant voice....and then drops into a small almost cracking voice when singing the next line "... the loser standing small". I knew she was a great singer but that was a stroke of genius. Or am I just imagining it?

Hello, nice yo see you in another reaction to the Sweden pop group ABBA, the leads in 70s, the decade post BEATLES
"The winner takes it all" is for me the best interpretation of a song that I heard in my life by any singer or bsnd
It is interpretation, because it is more than just singing, it is also acting and transmitting, and Agnetha does all that and on a superlative level
Beyond the morbid that the story of this song produces (the lyrics written by the guitarist and sung by his ex-wife), the structure reflects a change: it is the first time that whoever has the leading voice has been alone from beginning to end,
She goes one way and the choirs go the other (they do not add up, they remain in the background)
and in the end She is left alone passive and exposed, while the chorus and the music finish so up
That is why I feel that Agnetha does an extraordinary performance (extraordinary: out of the ordinary)
Her face is always very expressive and accompanies the various tones and nuances of her majestic vocalization.
(I remember her in other songs like:
    "I've been waiting for You"
    "S.O.S."
    "My love my life"
    "Thank you for the music"
    "Chiquitita")
"The winner takes it all" is a great song, it's in my ABBA Top 5
It is the favorite of British fans,
but fundamentally is the one chose
    by Björn (for its composition)
    and Agnetha (for its interpretation)
And their words is the one that is worth more
I like you for a reaction to "Chiquitita" at the Concert for UNICEF in 1979
or "Thank you for the music"
    at "ABBA in Japan"
    My best wishes for You
    and Happy New Year
    from Buenos Aires Argentina

One of the best Abba songs for sure. Perhaps you could consider giving Steven Wilson's (of Porcupine Tree) cover of The Day Before You Came a chance? It's simple but effective, imho making it another strong contender for best Abba song.
And if you haven't heard it yet, I _strongly_ suggest buying/listening to Benny Andersson's album Piano covering Abba songs on piano only. Stunningly beautiful, and should be compulsory for any Abba fan. (And also this version of The Day Before You Came is just incredible.)

This is my favourite ABBA song, followed by 'slipping through my fingers' and 'my love, my life'.
ABBA gold is approching 1000 weeks in the UK top 100 albums.
A favourite of mine from Agnetha in her pre ABBA days is 'vart ska min karlek fora'. I don't speak Swedish and don't understand a word but its her voice.

Mike and Ginger, I love you so much for this reaction, ABBA is just a phenomenon their song library (for that’s what it is) is unsurpassed. A song for every occasion. Please react to “Tropical Loveland” ABBA does reggae, you’ll live it. BTW, what IDIOT would cheat on you Ginger or Agnetha!. Love from Australia.

I wonder why only Agneta is singing on this one..,why they made that discision ..I mean,Benny & Frida broke up,too.

It's a highly personal song, Mikael, and was written soon after Bjorn and Agnetha's divorce, so it's appropriate that it has Agnetha leading it. You could say the same about 'When All Is Said and Done', which is seen as Frida and Benny's break-up song, on which Frida sings lead vocal. Also, don't forget that Frida (and Bjorn) are singing backing vocals on this one.

At this time "The winner takes it all" was recording (middle 1980):
      1) Benny and Frida wasn't divorced
      2) Björn and Agnetha was separated (in facts) at the end of 1978 ; their legal divorce was in middle 1980
(a lot of weeks before Björn write the lyrics)
      3) I read and see that Agnetha could put her feelings in her interpretation

My dad bought ABBAs first greatest hits album in the 70s when I was maybe 5yrs old. SOS was the first song I started to play on repeat on our Blaupunkt "music centre". Best songwriters, harmonies and vocals of all time... Have you reacted to Knowing me Knowing you, maybe my favourite...

I was like 15 - like Mike maybe - when I fell in love with Abba, Meatloaf & Kate Bush. Abba was the first live music concert I went to lol. Probably a good choice since they did so few live shows.

All their songs lyrics are written by Bjorn not Benny with the exception. Of one or two that Agnetha wrote..

    • @quezcatol
      @quezcatol 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

yeah but dont forget that the "music" we hear was often written before by Benny and Björn would fill with a text. Abba without the music wouldnt be Abba. In fact, I saw here on Swedish tv that Björn imself said that he wrote the text to this song after hearing how Benny had wrote the music for it. So this isnt a "Björn" song, or a Benny - its both and they credited each other, always!
