    Abilify is an antipsychotic medication manufactured and marketed by Otsuka Pharmaceutical and Bristol Meyers Squibb. There are numerous lawsuits pending involving their antipsychotic medication Abilify that clearly show the drug can cause impulse issues in adults, such as chaotic gambling, shopping, binge eating and hypersexuality. America’s Lawyer Mike Papantonio discusses this.

    When I was growing up I was told these drugs merely slow your reflex time in ways similar to alcohol and that they leave your system within 3-4 weeks. Years later after I already figured out how dangerous they were on my own despite what doctors had told me, I heard about all kinds of disturbing side effects like tremors, "brain zaps", and stroke and that they can take many years to clear from your system and the side effects could become permanent. Boy did I feel violated.

    I have a relative on Abilify. My opinion is that this drug has saved his life. When he is taking his medication he is normal again. As well as many people with his condition, he distrusts doctors and drugs, including this one. He could very well decide that this drug is to blame for many of the problems in his life and decide to sue the company. That wouldn't mean he'd be right. This video makes unsubstantiated claims and it is endangering the well being of people like my relative, already inclined to be suspicious on the medical care they receive, often with devastating consequences.

    I was given this by psychiatrists and my dad who was a doctor. They never told me why I was taking it (they had diagnosed me with schitzophrenia without telling me). I took this for several years. It was only years later that I realized what the medication was for. I confronted my psychologist and my family, asking them why they had not told me of the diagnosis. I was told that they didn't want me to stop taking the medication. Now I'm finding out all the risky side affects. What a terribly irresponsible situation combining the doctors, psychologists, psychiatrist, mental health counselors, pharmaceutical industry, and even my own family

      Omg that's horrible. It did me the same way. I was on it 3 separate times. It made me worse each time I took it and after I stopped for a while. I was extremely jittery the last time to where I couldn't sit still. Im also a recovering addict and in the past it always made me go out and use. I stopped taking all meds, I was told that I was never going to function like a normal human being and I have proved doctors wrong. It's hard to get out of that mindset that you need something. I don't know your story but don't believe everything you are told. Believe in yourself and Im not saying stop taking it, tapering would definitely not be a bad idea. The biggest thing that helped me was microdosing. I just want you to know that you're not alone and it might be a long road ahead but at one point I was completely hopeless and I know if I can do it, anyone can. It sucks that these doctors are never held accountable for what these medications and the swapping of them to something else causes us to do afterwards. They just prescribe everyone the same thing because that's what is trending from the pharmaceutical company. They have ruined people's minds by trying to suppress normal emotions but because none of us are taught how to deal with our emotions, our parents didn't have the self awareness of their own emotions to know how, they try to make it seem not normal for us to feel. They want us completely desensitized.

    Abilify is also used to help anti depression medication. I suffer from severe depression and anxiety attacks. I started taking it last month and it has worked wonders for my mental health. I'm glad I have it because of the government's control over control substances. Yes, many people abuse, sell or become addictive to the control substances, but what about us, the people who regulated our scripts as told by our doctor and can't get our meds anymore? Abilify is an alternative. Sorry, but that's the way it is.

    • @TheMathKing
      @TheMathKing 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Yeah, sometimes TYT make some idiotic and ignorant reporting. My brother is autistic and Abilify essentially gives him the power of self-control, where he otherwise wouldn't have it. Medications are important, within context.

    • @LumumbaKShakur
      @LumumbaKShakur 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      He is not saying that it does not work, but that one of the known side-effects is lack of impulse control and they have down played the side effects, especially when it is used for extended periods of time. And even more importantly, it is prescribed for people that do not actually need it - which makes the side effects a problem. I can testify to the fact, having worked in residential centers for about 8 years, that teenagers with "behavioral problems" are often medicated to help control their behavior, even though their problem is often not a chemical issue in their brains. However, the way the system is set up means that Medicaid will not pay for treatment unless a psychologist attaches a DSM-V to their file and so ALL of those kids come in with a "Oppositional Defiance Disorder" tag no matter the reason they arrived, which eventually gets modified to something else that Medicaid will pay for because we as a society have decided that we are not going to pay for behavioral modication or counseling in children unless we can justify forcing them to take a pill.

    • @TheMathKing
      @TheMathKing 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      You are correct that psych meds are prescribed without enough care or consideration. You are also correct about the context of what he said in the video. I rewatched it and I retract my criticism of TYT in this case. It is still important to make sure to not vilify this medication and at least represent its actual usefulness so people won't just stop taking it when they might actually need it.

Hopefully no liver damage in the future.

    Most antipsychotics are dopamine antagonists, at least at the D2 receptor. Abilify is a partial agonist, so it is more likely to cause this disinhibition, like the dopamine agonists used for Parkinson's do. There is some thought that Abilify might be better for negative symptoms, but I don't know if that has held up with the research. All drugs have side effects. There needs to be much better monitoring of patients on psychiatric medication, especially with initiation or after dose increases. I also think that no one other than a psychiatrist should be prescribing antipsychotics. But it is mostly primary care.

    My cousin walked out of his house, in the wee hours of the morning, put a gun in his mouth and pulled the trigger.

      Xilom82 thank you for your response - I've never studied pharmacology or brain function and only read sporadically for information - I'm particularly interested in the effect of cannabis on the prefrontal cortex in developing brains - particularly in the female population - but I did take Valium in high doses (40mg per day) from around 13 (15 mg per day then the greater value in my 20's - I'm 58) to around 36 - by prescription - the muscle relaxing component makes it a bit a different - I cannot and will not take Xanax - I see the comment below and my personal experience is that it interfered with my decision making process - Valium worked well for me - but it makes me more aggressive - and lord knows I don't need that - well hahaha people around me don't need that - age and some relaxation techniques have apparently helped - I take nothing now - that is best if possible - I am fortunate - others are not - there is a way to address these issues pharmaceutically and give relief - stress is - painful - I would describe it as my skin being too tight and ultimately end up with what I called hard bounced muscles in back neck - all over really - and next that would become migraines - frankly - I believe in my case it is internal energy and I have learned how to channel it -

      Shawn Ruby It made them worse. The anxiety is from knowing that helplessness and the extremes my own actions can take, constantly trying to control myself and not knowing why I think the way I did. Then, once all of the shit is gone, letting go of all of that effort for self control, is impossible.
      Weed has been illegal in every state I've lived in(not saying no here), and I've moved a lot, so have no way to get a hold of it if I tried.

    idk man. I took that drug for a least a few months and that didnt happen to me. It's gotta be a rarer side effect. drugs work differently on all kinds of people, and unfortunately, drugs used for mental illnesses seem to be interchanged across different disorders all the time. I don't really get it. Abilify is marketed as an anti-depressant.

    • @CitizenofDystopia
      @CitizenofDystopia 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Abilify is classified and used as an antipsychotic. Even if you make the mistake with marketing to believe it's an antidepressant, your doctor knows it is not.

    A lot of drugs have serious side effects. Abilify is one of them. However, Abilify is appropriate for some individuals, especially people who are psychotic. I contend that this clip avoids that important fact, and this clip lacks an understanding of psychopharmacology, and science in general.

      Rapacious Interloper Then I challenge you to start taking the same meds and see how you fair. Start with Cymbalta. Take it for three months and then stop suddenly; let's hear about your psychopharmacology imperical data then...

    • @thewizishere
      @thewizishere 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes but it has more to do with the fact that all the side effects where not listed with this drug. which can mean all the difference. i just looked at some of them now. i took the drug when i was a teen, i was in foster care and i see one side effect that started with the drug that ended up making me have a lot of trouble because i was blamed, not helped , with that issues.

    • @rapaciousinterloper4725
      @rapaciousinterloper4725 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thewizishere The problem is the overprescription of this drug and pharmaceuticals in general. If you were not psychotic when you were given the drug, it was inappropriate, if not child abuse. Don't blame the drug. Blame the doctor.

    • @rapaciousinterloper4725
      @rapaciousinterloper4725 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Geoff Beyrent I am not psychotic so this drug would be detrimental. Just like I don't have cancer, so if I took cancer medications, it would be detrimental. Many of my psychotic patients have had major improvements in their daily functioning, because of Abilify. The problem is with overprescription, not the medication itself.
