Great video and live you instructions. My question is my cotton fabric says do not pre wash or tumble dry. I made 2 samples and washed and dried both. They did shrink some. Do you have that problem?
Thanks, Joanne! My rule of thumb about washing prior to sewing is that if you are going to be washing the finished product, then pre-washing is a smart idea. Wonder why they said not to pre-wash? You'd never want to pre-wash batting but cotton makes sense. Do I always pre-wash? Nope... not always. But I don't make mine to sell.
I will be using preshrunk cotton fabric for these cozies. How much shrinkage will the cotton batting have and how will this affect the cozy I'm making?
Hi Betty - You shouldn't have any problems. Since the cozy will be sewn into a bowl shape, the batting is going to conform to your cotton outer fabrics. They are always going to look 'bad/funny' after being washed so I don't put mine in the washer that often. I always air dry after each use. I'll rinse them every now & then in the sink then air dry them. Only when they've got major spills on them do I throw them in the washer on a low spin. Then I hang dry them. This seems to make them hold up for a much longer time. However you wash & dry, you'll want to give them a good press afterwards to bring back the shape. Hope that helps!

I have the wrap batting zapping wrap, do I have to put the batting on both pieces of the cozy? Will a single layer of batting suffice for the microwave? Thank you.
It's your preference. Some people have a tougher time sewing 2 layers. You will get better protection from really hot items with 2 layers. I recommend making 1 with 1 layer & make another with 2 layers then test them out to see which you prefer. If making as gifts or to sell, then do the 2 layers.

I have never tried but I think if they & the threads are 100% cotton that they wouldn't cause a problem in the microwave. Not sure how well they will hold any shape but I'd be interested to hear how they work for you!

I guess I use my 9x13 baking dish more often than the others. You know the pyrex one that makes a nice size cake or enough lasagna to take to the pot luck meals.
I have an insulated, zip up carrier that I use for my 9x13 pyrex so no need for a cover. Just something to set it in when it's on the table or on the counter would be great

Great question, especially since felt is a staple for many of us. Sadly, felt is not safe for the microwave since it's flammable. If you're making bowls to hold keys, glasses, etc. then you could use it.

These are nice but I'm poor and 51 bucks for two pieces is so far out of my price range! I get my fabric from thrift stores and estate sales. I would love it to help but I guess I will stick with my scissors and a dollar store ruler and I think mine will still be great

Great question! I have been working on creating a template for rectangular dishware. The problem is they are all different sizes! You could use one of my Cozy Templates & place your fabric on the fold so that it goes past the middle of the template. Then stitch up as you would one of my cozies. It will make a longer cozy. The trick is figuring out the size. Do you have a favorite glass dish that you like? Let me know the size & I'll see about putting a template out for your size. You can always call me to get me to bump this to the top of the list! 850-four four nine 0259.
There's a type of plastic that you can buy by the metre (Ithink) that you can adhere to your rulers to stop them sliding when cutting, so you'd easily be able to use it underneath any sized templates that you want. You could probably also put it onto a breadboard or cutting mat which would also stop your fabric from moving around. Of course if you used it on your cutting mat, you'd probably need to replace it after a certain amount 9f cutting, so id suggest only using it on an old cutting mat to begin with, just to see how it goes. But it's certainly worth using on your plastic templates! 😊
Hi Wendy - there's all kinds of stuff that you can use but my No Slip gray backing is the only thing I know of where you can truly say, "No Slipping; No Kidding!". Plus, I have tons of designs that are already cut accurately by laser for you. No need to make your own...

Great question! You can use the templates for the bowls; you'll just need to change the darts to even wider than I show in the video. I may create something like my Ice Cream Cozy for them someday if I get requests for them. I am also working creating templates for rectangle casserole dishes. They come in different sizes and angles from many brands but trying to create something that will work with the most popular.

Why not make a paper template to suit your own bowl, just like you make templates for baking? It would save having to a lot of templates and adjustments to suit every bowl or plate size. 😊

Sorry! There are tons of ways to make them & I am just showing my method using my Winner Designs No Slip Templates. Rather than paper or cardboard or whatever, they make everything fast & easy but consistent, too. If you sell the cozies, they'll all look exactly the same giving a more professional finish. Plus, these templates also make it easy to go from a standard bowl to a steep bowl to a plate. I have lots of requests for more details so my apologies!
Why are you not measuring the outside surface of bowl? IMHO. The size dosen’t need to be exact. Just be aware when handling. I think the larger the “ears” the better for grabbing.
Way back, when I was showing how to decide which size to choose, measuring on the outside hadn't occurred to me! And you're right; the size does not need to be exact. But I had bought some cozies before making these templates that were either too small or large enough but the darts didn't allow for my bowl to fit down inside. Thanks for your feedback!

I have made bowl cozies for years. I always told people "Not to use in the microwave". My point was that if the cozies had some grease on it, could catch fire. I always do all cotton by the way. Recently I did see a caution note on another recent site that said, "not for the microwave". I'll bet it's because people had some issues. Something to think about.
Thanks for your comments. Fire in the microwave happens for a couple of reasons - using cotton batting with scrim rather than 100% no scrim, not using 100% cotton thread, using fabrics with metallics, microwaving too long, microwaving just the fabric bowl without food, leaving the microwave unattended, etc. They can be used in the microwave no problem if you follow some simple guidelines.
@@Lindavideos My thought is if you're selling them, it could be a liability issue if they catch fire for any reason as in "microwaving too long, microwaving just the fabric bowl without food, leaving the microwave unattended, etc." I'm afraid people, children, don't always follow simple rules or they forget the rules. I make them and use and sell them. I don't want it to be a liability issue, so I say to customers, no microwave and there is even a tag to say it.
So sorry to hear that Parkinson's has stolen your ability to sew! I don't make finished products to sell as I stay super busy bringing out new templates & taking care of orders. The instructions are free on my website www.winnerdesigns.com. I sell No Slip Templates for the Microwave Bowl Cozies & a ton of other designs. The No Slip 'grabs' your fabric when you cut. That ensures consistency but also makes them much faster & easier to make! They also have holes for making the darts and for stitching the X marks. These also give consistency.

I was thinking that 10 1/2 inch would be best but I’m not sure if square or round is better what is your recommendation or if I’m getting the correct size? My bowls measure eight, nine, and my deep bowl is 10 inches. All measured like you showed us. I have not added any extra inches yet to them

My question is my cotton fabric says do not pre wash or tumble dry.
I made 2 samples and washed and dried both. They did shrink some. Do you have that problem?
Thanks, Joanne! My rule of thumb about washing prior to sewing is that if you are going to be washing the finished product, then pre-washing is a smart idea. Wonder why they said not to pre-wash? You'd never want to pre-wash batting but cotton makes sense. Do I always pre-wash? Nope... not always. But I don't make mine to sell.
I will be using preshrunk cotton fabric for these cozies. How much shrinkage will the cotton batting have and how will this affect the cozy I'm making?
Hi Betty - You shouldn't have any problems. Since the cozy will be sewn into a bowl shape, the batting is going to conform to your cotton outer fabrics. They are always going to look 'bad/funny' after being washed so I don't put mine in the washer that often. I always air dry after each use. I'll rinse them every now & then in the sink then air dry them. Only when they've got major spills on them do I throw them in the washer on a low spin. Then I hang dry them. This seems to make them hold up for a much longer time. However you wash & dry, you'll want to give them a good press afterwards to bring back the shape. Hope that helps!

I have the wrap batting zapping wrap, do I have to put the batting on both pieces of the cozy? Will a single layer of batting suffice for the microwave? Thank you.
It's your preference. Some people have a tougher time sewing 2 layers. You will get better protection from really hot items with 2 layers. I recommend making 1 with 1 layer & make another with 2 layers then test them out to see which you prefer. If making as gifts or to sell, then do the 2 layers.

I have never tried but I think if they & the threads are 100% cotton that they wouldn't cause a problem in the microwave. Not sure how well they will hold any shape but I'd be interested to hear how they work for you!

I have been wanting to do one for quite a while. The problem is deciding on a size since casserole dishes come in so many shapes & sizes. Do you have a favorite?
I guess I use my 9x13 baking dish more often than the others. You know the pyrex one that makes a nice size cake or enough lasagna to take to the pot luck meals.

Can you measure the bowl from the outside instead of the inside?
Yes, absolutely! Either way would work as it's just a rough estimate. Things like seam allowance & thickness of batting are factors, too~

Can you use felt for your batting?
Great question, especially since felt is a staple for many of us. Sadly, felt is not safe for the microwave since it's flammable. If you're making bowls to hold keys, glasses, etc. then you could use it.

These are nice but I'm poor and 51 bucks for two pieces is so far out of my price range! I get my fabric from thrift stores and estate sales. I would love it to help but I guess I will stick with my scissors and a dollar store ruler and I think mine will still be great

No need to print or trace on cardstock. paper or plastic to create your own that may not be accurate and that can be easily damaged, altered or lost. How would I make a microwave cozy for a rectangular glass dish?
Great question! I have been working on creating a template for rectangular dishware. The problem is they are all different sizes! You could use one of my Cozy Templates & place your fabric on the fold so that it goes past the middle of the template. Then stitch up as you would one of my cozies. It will make a longer cozy. The trick is figuring out the size. Do you have a favorite glass dish that you like? Let me know the size & I'll see about putting a template out for your size. You can always call me to get me to bump this to the top of the list! 850-four four nine 0259.

There's a type of plastic that you can buy by the metre (Ithink) that you can adhere to your rulers to stop them sliding when cutting, so you'd easily be able to use it underneath any sized templates that you want. You could probably also put it onto a breadboard or cutting mat which would also stop your fabric from moving around. Of course if you used it on your cutting mat, you'd probably need to replace it after a certain amount 9f cutting, so id suggest only using it on an old cutting mat to begin with, just to see how it goes. But it's certainly worth using on your plastic templates! 😊
Hi Wendy - there's all kinds of stuff that you can use but my No Slip gray backing is the only thing I know of where you can truly say, "No Slipping; No Kidding!". Plus, I have tons of designs that are already cut accurately by laser for you. No need to make your own...

Great question! You can use the templates for the bowls; you'll just need to change the darts to even wider than I show in the video. I may create something like my Ice Cream Cozy for them someday if I get requests for them. I am also working creating templates for rectangle casserole dishes. They come in different sizes and angles from many brands but trying to create something that will work with the most popular.

Why not make a paper template to suit your own bowl, just like you make templates for baking? It would save having to a lot of templates and adjustments to suit every bowl or plate size. 😊
Sure, that can be done as with any other paper template. But if you're planning to make more than one, the No Slip wins hands down in ease, consistency & quickness.

Sorry! There are tons of ways to make them & I am just showing my method using my Winner Designs No Slip Templates. Rather than paper or cardboard or whatever, they make everything fast & easy but consistent, too. If you sell the cozies, they'll all look exactly the same giving a more professional finish. Plus, these templates also make it easy to go from a standard bowl to a steep bowl to a plate. I have lots of requests for more details so my apologies!
Love the tutorial but the bowls may be easier to measure from the back side since the tape will stay in place. It may help someone else.

Why are you not measuring the outside surface of bowl? IMHO. The size dosen’t need to be exact. Just be aware when handling. I think the larger the “ears” the better for grabbing.
Way back, when I was showing how to decide which size to choose, measuring on the outside hadn't occurred to me! And you're right; the size does not need to be exact. But I had bought some cozies before making these templates that were either too small or large enough but the darts didn't allow for my bowl to fit down inside. Thanks for your feedback!
I have found when making a bowl cozy I make a tag to help slide it out of the microwave. It works well.

I have made bowl cozies for years. I always told people "Not to use in the microwave". My point was that if the cozies had some grease on it, could catch fire. I always do all cotton by the way. Recently I did see a caution note on another recent site that said, "not for the microwave". I'll bet it's because people had some issues. Something to think about.
Thanks for your comments. Fire in the microwave happens for a couple of reasons - using cotton batting with scrim rather than 100% no scrim, not using 100% cotton thread, using fabrics with metallics, microwaving too long, microwaving just the fabric bowl without food, leaving the microwave unattended, etc. They can be used in the microwave no problem if you follow some simple guidelines.
@@Lindavideos My thought is if you're selling them, it could be a liability issue if they catch fire for any reason as in "microwaving too long, microwaving just the fabric bowl without food, leaving the microwave unattended, etc." I'm afraid people, children, don't always follow simple rules or they forget the rules. I make them and use and sell them. I don't want it to be a liability issue, so I say to customers, no microwave and there is even a tag to say it.

You have to buy the instructions
The instructions are free on my website www.winnerdesigns.com. I sell No Slip Templates for the Microwave Bowl Cozies & a ton of other designs. The No Slip 'grabs' your fabric when you cut. That ensures consistency but also makes them much faster & easier to make! They also have holes for making the darts and for stitching the X marks. These also give consistency.

Why not just measure the out side of that bowl instead of the inside. It’s the outside that will have to be inside the cozy
Thanks for your comment, Linda! I've had several people ask me about this - but all were after I filmed this! Either way will work since we can play with seam allowances, but your method will certainly be a bit more accurate.
I think it is disgusting to allow your cat to walk over items that are going to have food on them. I bet your friends turn down dinner invitations from you. I know that I would.

Thank you so much for getting back to me so quickly. I definitely want to order one. I mainly gonna be doing bowls mainly but probably gonna do a few plates. I was thinking that 10 1/2 inch would be best but I’m not sure if square or round is better what is your recommendation or if I’m getting the correct size?
My bowls measure eight, nine, and my deep bowl is 10 inches. All measured like you showed us. I have not added any extra inches yet to them
