    Mr Jon Lord
An articulate gentleman, who played keyboards like a wizard
Sadly missed by everyone who loved Purple and early Whitesnake
    A great musical icon

Lord is right back in 75 when I listened to it. I hated it. I was coming off of Burn Stormbringer. As I got older..I love it. It's a rough diamond. A gem of its time..

Tommy Bolin was such a gifted musician, as well as being a competent vocalist, that it's desperately sad what happened. Given Glenn's burgeoning drug problems I suspect that had Mk4 survived another year both he and Tommy would have gone. But 'Come Taste the Band' is a great album and it's as much a Bolin showcase as 'Spectrum', albeit in another way. Certainly it's light years away from 'Machine Head' but that's not a bad thing imho. Coverdale and Hughes have really got the dual vocal thing happening, just as they had on 'Stormbringer', and the vitality that Bolin brings spurs them both into producing some of the best performances of their careers. RIP Jon Lord and Tommy Bolin.

Tommy certainly was an excellent guitarist. I consider his best work to be Spectrum and Teaser. Even Ritchie said, Tommy is really good. Having said this, DP was not the right gig for him, imo. CTTP was a good not great album. But, if you were to ask me the best DP album featuring Hughes and Coverdale, it's Burn by far. I consider Machine Head and Burn to be the 2 best Purple albums. And Burn is great mainly because Ritchie's playing was fucking incredible on that album, possibly his best studio work ever. I have to admit that of all the musicians who played in Purple, Hughes is my absolute least favorite. I did not like his vocal work at all, and found his bass playing to be somewhat lacking. I saw Purple in 72, 73, 74, 76 (and several times during the 80's). (And yes, I am old). The shows featuring the MKII lineup were phenomenal, superb musicianship from all 5. The Burn show was good, mainly carried by Paicey, Lord and Blackers. The CCTB show was poor, i hate to say. Poor Jon and Ian, they really had to bust their asses to carry the show.

@@ScienceTalkwithJimMassa Come Taste the Band is one of Bolin's best efforts.....it absolutely blows Stormbringer away....which with the exception of the titletrack sounds like lame easy listening FM rock....no wonder why Blackmore left....and Lord babbling later that it was a great album but shouldn't have been called Deep Purple is ridiculous.....it was he and Paice who wanted to carry on under the Purple banner and cash in on monster tour venues and album sales....

    • @ScienceTalkwithJimMassa

@@larrynolletti4594 Lord actually wanted Purple to stop when Gillan and Glover were out. Management said carry on. After Ritchie left, Jon was really wanting nothing more to do with Purple. It was Coverdale and Hughes (mostly Coverdale) who insisted they find another guitarist.
Bolin plays well on CTTB, and I do think CTTB is a better album than Stormbringer. In fact, I actually think Stormbringer is one of Purple's worst album if not the worst one.

The problem was that Purple wanted to stay a hard rock band, whereas Tommy painted from a broader pallette.
He and Glenn spoke very much the same language as far as music went, and their shared drug habit bound them together more than the rest of the band.
Punk was starting around that time, and the jazzy funky rock would have sounded better on the radio.
Also Fleetwood Mac was about to happen in America and that West Coast style of rock would have worked, minus David, who was becoming redundant.
But the main mistake was calling it Deep Purple.
They needed him more than he ever needed them. He was starting to happen, and life with Purple heightened his addiction.

At some stage somebody really ought to ask the blinding obvious question ‘how was Tommy Bolin allowed to die?’ In Deep Purple at the time all the members were older than him and the core members at least ten years older. Where was the kindness and protection he needed and who cared? What happened? I don’t know? But shouldn’t we ask how was such a prodigious talent abjectly not protected? I hope we all live in more understanding times that such a tragic loss and death should not occur again.

What really but me off him was seeing Joe Bonemassa playing a slow deep song and hughes is running around pulling faces like a village idiot which destroyed the whole song !!
