I'm actually from the same area as Breaking Benjamin, I grew up in Wilkes Barre PA. And I saw them numerous times at little clubs and such before they got big. Right age, right time I guess. And I absolutely agree this sounds like they traveled from 2002 and released this. Love it!!
The production of this song is Next Level! Listen with headphones and tell me I’m wrong. The last chorus with the background vocals repeating Awake is mesmerizing. I can’t put into words how much that has impacted me.

Now that you mentioned Sleep Token and how Vessel shares some of the same qualities as Ben, I can't unhear it. There is way more than 1% of similarities though, maybe 5%-10%. Vessel's phrasing is slower and more drawn out for a more melodic sound but sounds a lot like Ben in overall tone. Not every song of course but hearing this tune I could imagine Vessel singing it.
First Linkin Park. Then I heard 3 Days Grace is back with Adam back in the band, and now Breaking Benjamin dropping some nostalgia with "Awaken" It's 2001 all over again. Heck ya!!
We won't know what the song really is about till we see the video...if they make one...but Ben's lyrics are always a bit of a challenge to understand on a lot of his stuff...
To me, "I awaken, I survive, I still hear the call of life" sums it up pretty well; We go through dark times, but as long as we hear life calling us, we can find the strength to face them and get through.
