10 Habits that DESTROY Your Budget

  • and you're left broke...
Many of our habits are unconscious and come from lessons or beliefs that someone taught us at some point in our lives. What foods you eat, how you drive, or how you walk are learned traits that we pick up at some point in our lives.
This is the same with our spending habits. The way we spend money has a lot to do with unconscious habits that we learned at some point in our lives. In this video, I talk about "10 Habits that Destroy Your Budget."
    1. Bein' a Sucka'
It is normal in our society to be ripped off by buying certain things at a high price and, it's not just normal, but people are bragging about it. Overspending on cars, phone, and food because of certain marketing strategies. Be conscious of marketing strategies to avoid being ripped off.
    2. Identifying with Stuff
Many people are being ripped off because companies market their products as a status symbol or lifestyle, which leads many people to find identity through brands. This is, however, a very expensive habit, but can easily be avoided by not identifying with possessions.
    3. Thinking You Can Pay Things Off
Buying something on credit keeps going by different names like layaway, credit cards, or afterpay; however, these are all the same things. If you can't afford to buy something now, how are you going to afford it in the future? Credit is stealing from your future self and can make it impossible to keep up.
    4. Thinking People are Better Than You
There is a lot of pressure from society and social media to buy a bunch of things as you will see people who live happy lives with a bunch of possessions. We all have problems and, I think, when someone is telling you they have it all together it is because they are trying to sell you something. Consumption won't solve your problems because you will always have problems.
    5. Wanting Things Quickly
A big problem that people have with money is they want to get rich quickly or get a service quickly; however, this often just leads to money disappearing or overspending. Society is becoming extremely impatient and this impatience translates to more spending for convenience. Patience is the key to success with anything worthwhile in life.
    6. Being in a Rush
Being in a rush simply means that you have lost control. When you are in a rush you cannot think straight and are so focused on getting to the end destination. This translates to seeking what is easy and convenient, which normally costs more money. Living a calm and organized life helps you avoid the extra charges for easy and convenience.
    7. Being Cheap
Being cheap is a habit that can cost you money because it often sets you up for buying the same thing again shortly. Sometimes when something is cheap, it does not last long, which will make you have to buy it again. Being cheap saves you money in the short run, but costs you more money in the long run.
    8. Assuming Expensive Means Better
Many times when we are shopping, we assume that when something costs more, it is better; however, I believe that a lot of what dictates price is marketing and packaging. I go by the motto, "Same until proven different" because I need to be convinced that something is better not just by price and packaging. Do your research before buying something more expensive; instead of thinking everything more expensive is better.
    9. Spending Money on Things You Don't Use
In today's world, most services come in monthly subscription services at very cheap prices. Since the prices are so low, even if we are not using them, we generally don't cancel them because they're so cheap. This is, however, just throwing money away on a service that you are not even using. A penny saved is a penny earned so don't throw away money on services you don't use.
    10. Getting Excitement from Opening a Box
Unboxing is a trend that is similar to opening presents on Christmas. Most of the excitement comes from the action of opening the box, rather than what's inside the box. This habit becomes never ending and leads to a cluttered life. There is nothing wrong with buying possessions, but the joy should come from the possession, not the unboxing.

I haven't ordered any food delivery in over 4 months and that's saved me Immensely.
It provides convenience but you pay for all overhead operating expenses of the corporation + the tip that you otherwise wouldn't incur for takeout.
Walking, biking or bussing to restaurants has saved me SO much.
When I'm feeling ultra disciplined and conservative I save the most money and have more fun just preparing my own meals at home!
If you work 40 or more hours a week and have to budget your down time for commuting and sleep-
Weekly meal prep can be a life saver!
The ease of convenience and impulse buys will drain your finances twice as fast.

Buy the best (you can afford) and cry once !! Live by this!! I use my butter dish example, I wanted a butter dish, but I didn't want to spend more than $10 ...I hated the cheap ones and ended up buying like three cheap ones, that were too small to fit the butter without making a mess, too hard to open and close, etc. etc. before I finally decided to buy the $30 one that I really wanted. So, I ended up spending $60-$70 instead of just $30 for the one I originally wanted!!! And yes!! when you buy the expensive packaging you are only supporting the MAN!!!! For me that s especially true with cosmetics. Drug store cosmetics have the same or better ingredients than the high priced department store brands...no way Jose!!!

Dia duit (Irish for Hello!) Austin/Augustine, well done on your acute observations. I have a marketing degree and you are so right, the tactics that companies use to get you to part with your money are unreal. To quote Shakespeare (The Merchant of Venice) “All that glitters is not gold”. Packaging, promotions, advertising, influencers, blogs, product placements in movies and tv shows, smells, end of aisle, eye level products and branding all sells. I don’t work in that sphere but it’s so helpful to know that we are being played. Keep up the great work. Muchas gracias Amigo. (Go raibh maith agat mo chairde).

We have a fixed written down budget and nothing could destroy it. We're living on a ridiculous small budget and can afford all we need. Ergo we're rich! We even have a car, okay a very small one but with radio! We own a house, okay an old one but with enough space for two studios, a library, a workshop and guestrooms. We have garden with vegetables, flowers, bees, bumblebees, butterflies and lizards. And we're working independent. Going to work every day would mean more money. But why?

I used to have a friend who was really cheap, I’ve distanced myself from her now mainly because of that, for example I realised that when we went out for coffee it was normally me buying, she would wait and see if I would offer. Anyway, a friend told me she almost had a big accident because she wanted to fix her own roof instead of getting someone out to do it. She watched a TH-cam video , used the few tools she had, got someone to hold a big ladder and basically almost fell off the roof. In many ways she is actually a nice girl but her desire to be cheap was literally almost the death of her.

Great video Austin. Pay now pay later is the worst, even if you have the money in your bank it can just tip the balance in favour of spending as you don’t see that money leave your bank balance immediately. I really try to buy high-quality outdoor gear now and go with brands that can be repaired multiple times. I wear Vivobarefoor shoes which are expensive but have a resole and repair service in the UK this works out much cheaper than a new pair.

Yah, this world is crazy and I think it became more so since the invention of the internet in 1983 then in 1997 we got social media, then throughout the 2000's we got stuff like Facebook, youtube etc. Now everything is more advanced and we practically don't have to talk to people to order or anything, just a few clicks and send. But nothing is without its pros and cons. And I admit I am a little anxious about the future especially with AI coming around. I really ought to write about this in my novel.

good points ! but you are contradicting between your point 7 and 8, if expensive is not always better then go for the cheaper options, no brainer

I would add get in the habit of Taking care of your things if expensive or cheap. If it last longer you'll spend less and you'll still be excited to have them.

Meh, credit for food? Nope. Try fasting for a few days instead. Credit for a laptop? Maybe....use it to sell stuff on ebay? Yeah, I'd do that. Use it for gaming, nope. Unless youre a kick ass gamer making bucks playing.

    1) being a sucka-someone that is easy to scam!
    2) identifying with stuff-there is something wrong when a majority of your identity come with the brands.
    3) thinking 💭 you can pay things off over time such as after pay 💰 . Taking credit for getting a new laptop 💻 or an iPhone 📲.
    4) thinking that people are better than you-everyone has a story and everyone is a little messed up 🆙! It is called being a human.
    5) wanting things quickly or instant gratification
    6) being in a rush which means you lost control. Relax instead.
    7) being cheap instead of being frugal. Higher quality rain ☔️ jacket 🧥.
    8) assuming that expensive means better and falling for a marketing gimmick. Instead do your research 🔬
    9) spending money on things you don’t use such as a gym membership at Planet Fitness.
    10) getting excitement from opening a box 📦. Better to get excited about the possession.
This has got worse since the Covid-19 pandemic 😷

I spent many years with these bad habits and am now almost done paying for my past choices. I think they come down to boredom, discontentment, and comparisons. When my kids were little 20 years ago, we would order stuff just to get packages in the mail because it was the only excitement we had, lol.

My mother bought me new sneakers every year from Kmart for $10/pair. The thing is they didn't last all year. I asked a friend about her sneakers. She had them for two years and they looked nice. I went to our local mall and found a pair like hers for $24. I told my mom about them. She never bought me another pair of sneakers after that. They were Nikes. I'm loyal to the brand because they last. I buy dumbbells. I lift daily. The weights cost about $30 for the set. It takes me awhile to build muscle from lifting them. My dog costs me a fortune. I rescued her, but she requires shots and checkups, flea care, etc. I love her, but she is expensive.

OLD SCHOOL??! *dies in old* 🤣💀🙈 Real question though: if your job, and where you work, has specific expectations which prioritise brands as a measure of competence, what do you do? As you always say, earning more money is good, but what if you're expected to 'spend money to make money'? So far, I've been trying to find things second-hand, but it really is ridiculous to me that "what we pay for coloured cloth gauges our gravity". But you know what? After seven years... Wearing the right coloured cloth got me promoted.

Yeah but as much as I like the ideas about saving if he makes content I think he is really trying to make more!!!! I think everyone already knows making more is going to in the long run beat saving more all else being equal!!!! I just worry people will spend their time trying to save more money rather than making more money instead!!!!
