Dudley Moore Trio - My Blue Heaven

  • Dudley Moore (piano)
    Pete McGurk (bass)
    Chris Karan (drums)
This clip is from an episode of "Not Only... But Also" but I'm not quite sure which one. It's most likely from the second series Christmas special, tx 26/12/1966, though I'm more than happy to be corrected.
Either way, it makes for an interesting comparison with the trio's 1965 well-known studio cut of the tune on "The Other Side of Dudley Moore", reissued in 1970 as "The World of Dudley Moore".

Pete McGurk was amazing as was Chris Karen. I admire the Dudley Moore trio so much as they opened my ears and eyes to the freedom of jazz. They were an inspiration and I will never forget them.

He is outstanding - great sense of rhythm with excellent backing by the bass and drums. I can hear a little of Peterson and then later in his playing career he is influenced by Garner, but always plays his own take on those guys...

Sadly missed. I worked with Dudley on 11 performances for bassist Peter McGurk in 1965, it was an absolute delight. Dudley is a wonderful musician and a dear man.l

Dudley Moore was without doubt a fine jazz pianist. Sadly, there are too few recordings of him from the 60s and 70s. He was massively underrated as a jazz musician here in the UK. A great talent RIP

I wouldn’t say underated , He & Peter Cook had a weekly TV show. Always had at least on song from the trio. Ir was that he was an extremely funny guy, especially when he worked with Pete . Their comedy was a major part of that show though.

@@beagle7622 I stand by my comment that as a jazz pianist he was hugely underrated. In 1974 I tried to get an LP with him on it.......it was difficult then to get any material by Dudley.

@@martinplatt5928 Look I was just going on what My Mum told me . She saw Pete & Dud in London mid sixties, the place was sold out for months. I think a lot of the media didn’t realise what a great musician he was though.

As several other have commented, Dudley Moore is rightly remembered for his great playing; but let's not forget the excellent Messrs Karan and McGurk. The latter was an outstanding bass player whose career ended prematurely through personal tragedy.

    Dudley was a class act.
A brilliant jazz pianist, he was up there with Oscar Peterson.
That period of British jazz was magnificent - Tubby Hayes, Ronny
Scott, Dick Morrissey, Mike Westbrook, Joe Harriott but it was
overlooked by the global domination of the Beatles.
A reminder of a truly gifted man.

@1979saxman Thanks - he can be heard with Dudley, with Sounds Orchestral, on the Hamlet ad, as a session musician on many 60's songs, inc Cilla Black & Dusty Springfield singles, and Englebert's Release Me. Sadly, he committed suicide in June '68 after he came home and found a lot of notes left all round the house by a Danish girlfriend, saying ''I don't love you".......he took a load of pills and called his brother to say he was dying - they could not reach him in time. A great loss to all.

I used to love wathcing the "mad" drummer in the Dudley Moore Trio when this stuff went out live in the 60's.
I suppose "animal" from the Muppets is the ultimate development of the style, via that Moon guy in The Who. All relatively low-key here in comparison, but still fun to watch.
As a pianist with perhaps 1% of Dudley's talent, I cannot imagine how terrible it must have been for him to lose the ability to play later in life.
