  • Finally got the opportunity to work with my bees after Hurricane Ida, and was looking forward to it. Well, it didn't go as well as I was hoping. So here ya go, let's see what I found.
    Thanks for joining me in my bee yard here in Louisiana as I share how I maintain my beehives. My videos are not meant to be 'How To' videos, but simply me sharing my experiences in beekeeping as I learned it from my mentors, teachers, and studies.

    Now those are FRIENDS. I once had a priest tell me that true long lasting friends are so rare, that most people are lucky to have 2-3 of them to count at the end of their lives. Now he was not talking about friendly acquaintances that you care deeply for - he was talking about someone who would drop everything and come running if you needed help. Someone who would grab a weapon and stand back to back to you. Who would think nothing of putting their own lives on the line to save yours.
    The video was great, and I am so sorry about the SHB and wax moth problems! I know you will stop it as soon as possible, but yes, damage is damage, have to deal with that too.
    But for me, I could not get past those two lifelong friends of yours. God blessed you mightily. I am so happy to see that!

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Wow Julie!! I’m telling you, I actually edited out of the video, what you said, almost word for word, at least the first few sentences. Literally the same words. Only 2 or 3 in a lifetime, drop anything and come, friends, not acquaintances, etc. I have the edited video to prove it. Yep, he was correct and they came straight over. One couple cancelled their Labor Day trip to the mountains to come work. Well, hives weaken and pests take over. It happens and so my role is to get back after it and refine ways to keep it from happening again.

      Truth is truth!
      And you will get your colonies where you want them again, most people don't realize when a hurricane hits you directly like that it can take years to get things back to order. You got the foundation elements all back together in record time, now you will need months to a year to get the colonies there again. One thought: I was wondering if you were slowly growing yourself out of the hobby stage? If so, you could combine and get yourself back to a few less colonies - but the ones you combined might fit what you are looking for in a pollen harvestable colony. But I think you have already achieved a life time goal on best friends - though you may still find another. Cherish those two!!

    Glad to see your safe and back up and running Mike. You might want to look at Bob Binnie two videos applying Apiguard. I am going to try it next year because you can very the dose size depending on temperature or size of the hive using the malt-dose pale. Using the Hive Lifter is still looking good to me it sure is saving your back. I am trying to very my mite treatment products also, I have use Apivar, Formic-Pro, and will use OA in November and December when the hives are brood less this year. In the past years I have been using OA doing multiple treatments week after week a lot of work and I lost a lot of hives last winter, so I am trying this new treatment strategy to see if I have a better over winter survival rate than I did last year with less work. Take care Mike maybe I will see you at Kamon Reynolds Hive Life Conference and Tradeshow 2022

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Charles, I have watched those videos and that is kind of what got my gears turning. That and as you said, the work in the dead of summer heat going out week after week. Didn’t lose a lot of colonies and have had great success with the OA, but just so much work. Also, and I’m not sure I conveyed this in the video, but if I had treated with an in-hive treatment, they would’ve been good thru the storm. But now, the storm interrupted my OA regiment and it has to be started all over again. I think that is kind of the final straw for me. I could’ve started earlier and left them alone with something in the hive. Family and property had to come first. I truly wish I would’ve gotten video of us lifting my friend’s hives for storm prep (we did in fact save them. The water went to the entrances only). But it worked like a champ and made a 20 minute job with lifting full deeps into about 5 minutes and no lifting. I will be installing 3/4” strips on all my homemade deep boxes and using a 3/4 router bit on all future boxes so I can lift everything with the lifter.

    I'm sure the hurricane took out (or laid down) a lot of the pollen/nectar sources which could account for the "weakened hives". Ida came through here too (south central PA) and laid down the jewelweed which bees love so I've started feeding as cold temps will be here in four weeks and up here one need to have two medium supers of capped food stores for winter. Is what it is and keep on keeping on as my uncle used to say! Friends like yours are priceless!

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Absolutely Nancy. I was going to be mentioning that in my next video as well, that everything just got wind blasted and now rain for four days from tropical depression, so no forage, at least for another week or so. Have to get the new stuff blooming in order to get back on track. Or feed of course.

      @@MikeBarryBees You've got the seasonal warmth and grow time down south for the flowers to recover... up here we are fast running out of time in south central Pennsylvania. I've already fed back the deadout honey/syrup from last winter, added in thawed capped frames from the freezer and then due to robbing issues, thawed and extracted the remaining mix of honey/syrup freezer frames and fed that back to the bees and they are still light on food stores. Making syrup now and planning on purchasing prosweet too then hoping there is some fall flow to make up the difference needed. Have already done fall mite treatments but will try a round of OA as a last opportunity before bees cluster up for winter.

    happy all is in order and you are getting back to some state of normal. I have been trying to find a decent trap that will work for me, I believed I have tried that yellow/brown model you have but didn't get much results from it. I recently found one that I like so will be going with that model. Pollen collect seems tricky so I will need to study how best to collect from the colonies but that will take time.

I am happy that you have power and have your place back in order, I realize that it just eats at you when the place is damaged and things are at a disarray. You have a spring in your step now! When the video first started I thought is was from before the storm because things looked so clean in the background (yard). Beekeeping used to frustrate me to no end because of things you just found (strong hives become weak and get infested) but I finally learned I have to go with the flow, be flexible, try hard and don't take it so personal. One last thing... every time I saw you wave your hands or point I just cant help but focus and laugh at those big thumbs you have (gloves) :) Glad all is well and that God chose to spare you and the family!

      Thanks John! Yea, the issues we have is the temp for when we need to treat. We should really be getting treatments started in august, but it’s consistently between 90 and 100 degrees F. That is a show stopper on most treatments. Listening to Bob Binnie, and what he states about the instructions for thymol, I guess I could go with apiguard. I’m going to research it further.

I know you weren't really tending to them much ,but wasn't sure if they were able to hang out in the busted hive, or if they just swarmed? Either way, just curious. I know with the damage from Ida you had to prioritize life a Lil different. Anyway, glad you're back!

    • @MikeBarryBees
      @MikeBarryBees  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      They did not make it. I got out there after the storm and began cutting the trees off, and the robbing had already started. I had wanted to try to get them in a box at that location for a quick and temporary home, but then the saw bar twisted in a large tree and I had to wait for parts from an out of town friend. By the second day, most were dead due to the robbers and the colony was all but lost. I salvaged some of the top bar structure for sentimental reasons and was able to melt most of the wax, but the rest was trashed and full of beetle larvae within a week. Thanks for the comment and well wishes!!

    Had one of my nuc yards slip on me just like that. Went there expected to see huge colony's stuffed boxes full of pollen and honey. Well they weren't foraging like the other yards. Brood patterns looking bad. Good thing i had dropped apivar in aug but still had to feed them in strong goldenrod flow .. oct they looked little better but man I figured I'd lose half of them this winter. Lucky for me we had warm fall got couple extra brood cycles out of them. Did my final oav treatment in Dec on warmer day they look pretty good now. Still had to feed them twice as much as my other yard's. Takes a couple months get them healthy again .. this yards close to town surrounded by bee keepers I'm sure there's mite bombs going off so apivar really good treatment lasts 60 days just keeps killing even after I pull the strips still active. I like to split my production colony's get them tight then drop apivar. Using oav treatment in Dec after bees are brood less cleans up any mites that might build up immunity to apivar. I'll drop apivar mid March as the bees start brooding up that gets me thru July.

    I also missed too many opportunities to treat OA due to the heat, and have had my share of dead outs as a result. I went to investigating a fair bit, and found wax moth larvae in the top groove of my frames.. ALL of my frames in those colonies. Freezing may be a great option, however I suggest you scrape a couple foundations and pop the foundation out and investigate, I hope you find them clear, I did not. I have no idea what effect if any a decaying moth larvae would have after freezing, and I hate to destroy comb as much as anyone. Please name the product and dosage when you ground drench, possibly even do a short on it. I wonder if my method is effective, so any insight you can offer would be certainly welcomed.

      Those frames were trashed. I got them all frozen and have had good success with killing everything on them with freezing in the past. Then if I need to take them out for space, I’ll take the good ones and store them sealed in paramoth. I will scrape the bad ones and salvage the rest. As far as ground drench for the small hive beetles, I use permethrin at 5ml per gallon. Usually two to three times a season depending on rainfall amounts.
