Born and grew up on the edge of Charleston County. I was told that there were “panthers” in the swampy woodlands / marshes far back from the coast (this was more than 65 years ago, much wilder than now). According to the stories, they could “scream like a woman”. Never heard or saw anything myself.
Yes, up here, the "panthers" were rumored to have roamed. That was probably 70 years ago. I have seen cougars on game cameras even though they aren't supposed to be in our state.
