    I didn't play for over 13 years (and before that short run in the mid 2000s, I stopped in 1986). I started playing again a couple of seasons ago and started back in at about a 4 handicap. I'm now a 0. As a "scratch" golfer, while I certainly agree that we should work on our strike pattern, it certainly isn't as important as short game and course management in order to shoot level par. Getting better at one's short game will certainly improve strike as a result. But watching a couple of your recap vids, where you focused on "bad shots", your "mistake" was actually hitting the wrong club off certain tees that brought trouble into play -- that then brought big numbers into play. Your mental game overall is great, but cleaning up your game from about 110 and thinking more about how to approach certain holes will shave off strokes instantly. In fact the couple of times I've shot in the 60s, I actually hit the ball "badly" those days -- but my misses were manageable (because I played the "proper" clubs) and I "missed" in easy places to recover from (didn't short side myself on certain pins) -- AND I got up and down on every green I missed -- then, sure, I birdied some admittedly easy par 5s. Too many people focus on aspects of the "driving range" (ie: hitting the ball "well" or "perfectly") -- if one can work on chipping, putting, wedges, course management (like really do it, not just say it) scores will instantly improve exponentially more. I documented this for myself on my channel. Now I'm trying to take those scores into competitive regional amateur golf. Strike is good yes, but it's overrated to scoring our best.

      When you say you’re hitting the ball badly and still scoring in the 60’s, I’m curious what the physical measurement of your bad are?
      2-3 inches fat? Skull thin? Toe side of the club where no grooves are?

    • @GolfAfter50
      @GolfAfter50 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@KennieKatGolf Simply not hitting the ball solidly -- a lot of thin shots those particular days that stayed in play -- either short or slightly off line -- then I got up and down every time. I would never say that someone hitting the ball 2-3 inches fat shouldn't work on that -- I actually chucked a wedge in one tournament this season and still shot 77 on a course I had never seen before -- but just because I holed a bunch of clutch 5 footers for par on super slick greens and played smart shots off the tees to the best locations that I could assess. But hitting a ball thin or fat is really very different than hitting it on the face as percisely as you outline in the video. Two different levels of ball striking -- that isn't to say that I don't work on attaining that -- but I work more on mental and course management aspects, reducing compounding my errors and of course always lots of work on distance control and strike with wedges. Then putting, putting, putting at the same time as conditioning (flexibility, strength for injury prevention, super speed golf)

      I ask because it’s something that I didn’t know until I caddied for very good players on the course and cleaned their clubs after a “bad” shot and I could barely tell the difference.
      A good player, like yourself, hits a “bad” shot in terms of mm. My bad shot could be 1 inch fat or 1/2” out the toe so I’ve gotta work hard to improve that before I can progress any further.
      Thanks for sharing, your insight is greatly appreciated! 🙏🏿 I didn’t know many scratch golfers were watching my content. 😂 😂 😂

    • @GolfAfter50
      @GolfAfter50 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@KennieKatGolf re: "so I’ve gotta work hard to improve that before I can progress any further." -- yeah this is what I'm saying -- if you can remove this "type" of thinking (to get "better" we "must" improve the long game/ball striking), you will just be surprised at how quickly you continue to improve your scores (you're doing great so far btw) -- adjusting thinking and course management doesn't require any physical skill, so it is the "easiest" fix and give the most "bang for the buck" in terms of score. Same with short game. Anyone can hit a chip and putt -- theybetter you get at hitting those shots, the better your long game contact will become as a result -- then sure, work on your contact overall (I do that all the time myself). So try to think not about what we "need to do" but what we "can easily do" to improve our scores. Watch the Brad Faxon instructional video on my channel (Putt to Win) -- I use those ideas every day. Keep up the great work! Dan Hendrickson has some great vids on his channel where he walks through some Course Management with a mid teens handicap and the guy shoots like almost 1 under for the 3/4 holes they play!

      @@KennieKatGolf As a 50-year old that's been playing a long time myself, "Golf After 50" has hit it right on the nose. I'm about a 2 or 3 handicap myself, but i believe my typical games are much like his --- that little dime area you outlined is certainly where you ought to try to strike it, but you can easily "get away" with thin shots below that circle, and toe shots all the way out of that circle (of course, straight-up tops and fat shots should NEVER happen if you're going to score well, definitely got to eliminate those). Hitting an area the size of a quarter regularly and you're probably in business. You'll wind up in the vicinity of the green, if not actually on it, most of the time. I've done it myself many times. I do believe to be better-than-scratch you'll have to be tight everywhere, but getting to scratch probably will require you to just score on average 75 or slightly better each 18 holes. Sounds like you're not far away from that.

    Another great video. Last week I played w a +0.5 and a 3 hdcp. Watching these guys was incredible. Ball strike and never put themselves into trouble. Solid off the tee and lag putts were spot on. I’m still shooting for my first 70’s round. Yesterday I shot an 84 and was 5 over on 16-18!! Ugh. And it was about 38* out. Keep up the great videos!

    Seriously great topic Kennie, and I truly believe this is one of the "most overlooked fundamentals" for people trying to improve their game. So many times you hear people wanting to improve their iron play, greens in reg, shots closer to the hole, stopping miss hits, etc etc... Goals like those are easier to quantify than hitting the center of the club face more consistently but they are the result of better ball striking. Training your mind to think less about the result of a shot and more on the strike is crucial when playing. Therefore the focus of your play and practice changes from "Oh I missed the green long" or "I'm 60 ft from the pin" to "I hit that shot a groove or two low making me miss long" or "I struck that way on the inside causing me to be 60ft right of the pin". This is a mindfulness change in your golf game and can really evolve your understanding of your own game which will help you become better faster.

      @@KennieKatGolf I’ve done the whole list of thing you said. Bomb drives, expensive shafts etc..... but never been a decent ball striker. But when I look at a really good golfers clubs the 1 thing that is constantly the same is the rust wear patter in the club faces centered right in the sweet spot, even on their putters.

    Couldn’t agree more, strike is king. I was told that you should learn this great game from impact backwards, but ego always gets in the way. We all want to “ bomb” it, and I’m using bomb in quotations because we all think we’re hitting it farther than we actually do. Some of my friends, and most everyone else, boast their “total” yardage as their “carry” yardage when it’s not true. Learn to hit the sweet spot and watch your scores drop quickly. Keep improving, brother.

    Many people who commented "hey strike is not everything; short game/course management is where it matters the most" usually are people who already strike the balls very well to begin with. If we still chunk/shank/slice/pull our shots 30-50% of the time (or even higher!), having a good short game and good course management just doesn't really matter. Only when the ball goes to the general direction of where we are aiming 7/10 of the time, course management and short game become much more important.

    • @KennieKatGolf
      @KennieKatGolf  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      100%. I think it’s difficult for the average golfer to accept how consistent your ball striking needs to be which is probably why less than 2% of golfers are scratch or better.

    • @Callofthegame247
      @Callofthegame247 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      This. I'm a professional level ball striker, and I agree that if you don't hit the ball consistently, course management really has no meaning outside of chipping out of trees instead of hero shots, etc. Short game however always matters, regardless of your striking ability. If I get up and down less than 60% during a round, I get agitated. My average is around 65% scrambling. If I couldn't chip and pitch I'd never break 75. But I agree overall with you, if you don't hit the ball well enough, management isn't as important.

    One of things I remember when I played my best golf as a youth was the importance of getting off to a good start. I used to never hit my driver until about the 5th or 6th hole. I would sort of ‘ramp up’ and establish a rhythm 🎶 first. I think having the ability to ride or feel momentum is critical as well. Long stretches of go mo-jo......You maybe too young to remember or have seen John McEnroe. He said the key to his success was getting off to a good start! I heard that later and was like wow. He pounced like cat early.

    I agree that being more consistent will put players in a better position to lower their scores. I've seen images out there where Fred Couples' wedge wear marks are toward the toe of the club head (dime formation), so you can still go low without pure center.
    You're well read, have you come across Geoff Shackelford's "Grounds for Golf" book? The chapter on "What is Golf Architecture?" can really change ones outlook on "scoring".

I finally started to take score and a couple guys who play told me I’m screwing my self now because I’m close to scratch material. But I love the game regardless. I feel putting is the best way to get to scratch, double or triple putting is a killer. Mathematically if you can hit an average of 200 yards per stroke, you can Par every hole, granted your a phenomenal putter.

    Ball striking is key, yes, but to be a scratch golfer you need to have worked out almost all weaknesses. You have to have an air tight short game and clutch putter. I've gotten to scratch once, but it was 10 years ago. Had to practice and play everyday for years to get there. But you are right, you must master contact on every shot or you will stay a mid-70's or 80's shooter. What's even scarier, is that PGA Tour players are 4-8 shots BETTER than scratch.

    Last year when I was off 0.4 I had two rounds under par out of my best 8. One -1 and a -2 that was all it took to be off scratch . I had a level and two +1 rounds the rest were a few over par. Because my worst 12 rounds don’t count I was a scratch even though the average score from last 20 was several shots over par. Being scratch is good still better than 99% of golfers . PGA tour pro’s are still a dozen shots better than scratch. If I was to play Rory from back tees 7500 yards he’d still beat me by 50 shots over 72 holes.

    Nice Kennie, a couple of questions/comments...
    With the WHS is it of course technically possible, I think, to play 8 rounds at scratch to become scratch... maybe it is not as hard as it was to get there?
    How do you separate your "friendly" golf stats from your competitive? My stats are recorded during the game by playing partners to an app and my stats are great in some areas. However, if you take out my non-serious scores then I am guessing the stats would be better but I have no way of knowing for sure. Certainly, my score averages would be better.
    You are totally right about the strike. I hit so many REALLY bad shots last year - if I got rid of even half of them I could at least comfortably get down to CAT 1. That and take less putts (avg 34,8)..
    I love the strokes gained analogies though - I hope the new tech I have just ordered will give me that sort of insight going forward too.
    Keep up the great work on the channel and best of luck as your strive towards your goal. I have every faith :-D

If you're scratch or better, usually it's not really practical to keep one. Being scratch myself, I have an established handicap, and keep up with it, but really it's just to gauge when I'm good enough to turn pro, as +5 is my goal. Otherwise it's not important.
