  • My favorite scene from the "Gourmet Night" episode of Fawlty Towers. Brilliant performance by Tony Page, who plays the snotty little kid. Elizabeth Benson, who plays the doting mother, would later return in another role in the episode "The Kippers And The Corpse"

      Just then, yesterday a kid wanted to have spaghetti in a fish restaurant and yet very rude to their parents. Me and the service man (who just help these customers) had a talk of what to do with kids these days. Give a free toy like a happy meal or just do it as they say. Some spoiled brats if you ask me.

      I did some guest lecturing at a school in London and one kid decided to throw all the tables on the floor, call all adults the 'c' word and spit at the staff who restrained him.
      By chance, his mother came in as I was leaving, asked where he was and I explained the above, that he was removed so I could give my speech. She said;
      'Oh, he can be such a lovable rogue I know'.
      As I was not a teacher it was perhaps easier for me to say ' how you can add 'lovable' to that is beyond me. You think the staff deserves that?'
      I heard she filed a complaint against me.

      Anarchist Atheist Trivia from the Daily Mail Sept 2015:
      Tony Page, 55, played an obnoxious child guest who told Basil his food was 'pigs' garbage'. Tony went on to work in catering.
      ''I was at stage school and Fawlty Towers was my first speaking part. I was 15 - but only looked 12 - and got paid £90, not bad considering I got £66 a week when I enlisted in the Navy two years later. I wore a tank top from M&S, but I didn't get to keep it.
      'The biggest shock was meeting Manuel: I wasn't expecting a posh guy, I thought he really was Spanish.
      'John was supposed to cuff me round the head, but my reflexes were so fast, every time he went to hit me, I ducked.
      'In the end he had to knock me with his elbow so I wasn't expecting it. I sometimes get Fawlty Towers out and watch it to cheer myself up.''

      @Dennis Moore It reminds me of the way some in the UK assumed that people in France would not like the comedy series, "'allo 'allo!", but in reality many there found it funny because it so well parodied aspects of events that occured during the war, eg. the way an ordinary person suddenly found themselves in a position of authority within the Resistance and act all high & mighty, just as the Captain Manwering character did in, "Dad's Army", even though such people are often well meaning. "'allo 'allo!" parodied all sides, that's why it was so good.
      I recall John Cleese saying how amazed he was when visiting Germany one time to encounter a crowd of German Fawlty Towers fans at the airport, many of them cheering as he approached with, "Don't mention ze war!".
      th-cam.com/video/7xnNhzgcWTk/w-d-xo.html
      Like you say, relating such things with humour, as people often do in order to cope with serious events, is the skill of the writers.
